Really? Don Dokken in a kimono isn't on the list? Or Queensryche's Queen of the Reich? Those are real abominations.

"Loverboy made horrible videos," confesses singer Mike Reno."

Probably the first and only time I'll agree with anything someone from the band Loverboy said. Unless, of course, someone in the band says that they made horrible music, too. I'd doubly agree with that.

This song makes me want to punch them all in the snout. (^)

Funny, that is exactly what made me like that video back in the day, and upon reviewing it now, my feelings are unchanged.

Mtv (new window)(new window) did this a decade ago and it was hilarious.

When you really think about it, how many videos weren't embarrassing? The first few years were ok, but eventually you run out of concepts, and most musicians didn't become actors for a reason. Sure, there are an almost unlimited number of ways to get scantily clad women involved. But internet porn pretty much made that obsolete.

"I have to say, I hated MTV," Toto guitarist Steve Lukather sighs. "Hated" is also a word he uses when recalling Toto's "Hydra" video. "We spent millions on sh--y videos, and they'd never get shown. It's like, 'Why don't I just take $50,000 into the backyard and light it on fire?'"

Way back when country (or I should say Garth Brooks) hit it big Confederate Railroad did a video for "Summer In Dixie" that not only was the most expensive country video ever done it never saw the light of day until a greatest hits vhs came out. Have to ask my old Atlantic buddy why it never aired on TNN...

Nope, I love it too. I mean come on. Look at the epic slow shots sometime. This was back in the day when you didn't have to be 16 and KAWAIIIIII to be a musician. You could be a balding weirdo as long as you could play music.

Honestly, it's cheesy as hell, but totally awesome.

/has a Journey t-shirt.
//wore it to a Children of Bodom concert. Bodom > Journey, but still.

MTV had a contest. The winner would get a part in a Loverboy video. Naturally, the winner was unattractive. In the video, Loverboy was doing their thing then, in an edit that made no sense, they cut to a .3 second long-shot of a girl behind a sound board. Then right back to the regular Loverboy hijinx. It was one of the great edits in film history, imho.

Anyway, I appreciate the early horrible videos on MTV. It made it seem like everybody had a chance get their crummy music or on tv.

The author has obviously missed the entire point of why videos were made in the 80s. To point out these videos is comparable to throwing at dartboard and seeing what you hit. These vids arent any worse than anything being made today. And they were done at a fraction of the cost. Back then they were made as an accompaniment to the song, now they are made as a crucial part of the song. The author and the article fail in epic proportions.

Ah, "Queen of the Broken Hearts". Still remember the cramp in my hand I got from writing out all those entry postcards. And the edit does make sense--supposedly the band is under surveillance and the contest winner was running the cameras, which you see a few seconds before the edit.

Speaking as a Loverboy fan the "Hot Girls In Love" video was farking Citizen Kane compared to "Gangs In The Street." Mercifully for all of you it's not up on YouTube but trust me, even when I was sixteen and adored them I thought it was one of the most hilariously awful things I'd ever seen. Mike Reno is right--Loverboy's videos are all various degrees of horrible.

Apart from the lipsynching thing, I always thought Milli Vanilli's "Blame it on the Rain" was good 'n terrible. Those f*cking outfits--neoprene tops with gigantic shoulder pads, and the little boy pants as they hippityhopped and twirled their weaves--ghastly.

They'd been around for 10 years, and the repackaging alienated alot of their fans. I didn't recognize them.

It is a pretty nice rack, though.

proteon: I wasn't embarrassed to enjoy these in the 80's at all. Then again I didnt' have a facebook page with 500 pictures of myself from last month to compare them to.

Me either. I STILL love them. The artists and directors were just beginning to figure out thie new medium. There were lots of, what appeared to be, disconnects between artist and director. Band management and record company influence probably had something to do with that too.

Kansas's Dust in the WInd. (new window) I laugh every time I watch it, but I love it. Its looks like some guys in blue Tux's playing guitars and singing in Sleepy Hollow with Hagrid playing violin. Epic.
