This is outrageous. We have to beat the personal responsibility out of them while they're young!

Save them from ever having the option to have something tasty but unhealthy! We must remove the option for the responsible, to protect the irresponsible!

I am being serious here: Unhealthy kids stimulate the economy. And they stimulate it in ways that seem good.

Give doctors and their many specializations (We have licensed Nutritionists now) all of our money and then let them buy BMWs with it.

Heh. Yeah, my kid's school lunches are utter and complete crap. I make him lunch every day instead, he likes it much better.

JanusofZeal: Save them from ever having the option to have something tasty but unhealthy!

Unhealthy food vs. not eating at all? Now those are some fair, reasonable options.

Someone suggested in another thread that public school food be the only food available in the Congressional cafeteria. I am OK with this.

No more Senate bean soup for you!

They have french fries in school lunches? Those are merely vehicles for sauce.

In exchange for the pizza, maybe we can have less hamburger? I'm am damn near sick of ground beef.

It's funny, my school cafeteria served a bunch of garbage, but I'd never know because I had lunch packed for me every morning.

If you're "hungry" ask yourself if you're hungry enough to eat an apple. If you aren't, then don't eat.

No matter how healthy they try to make school lunches, they really can't control what the kids eat OUTSIDE of school. They may it somewhat healthier in school but those kids will gobble up 1,000 calorie meals as if they're cereal, and that's just for snacks!

How about make a campaign instead that shows how being fat will kill you someday. They might as well throw in the scary truth about how painful not being able to breathe and heart pains can be. They might also want to forget about being politically correct and just tell them the sad truth that "Hotties don't like fatties." These things might actually make the kids realize that they're becoming the next BLOB and they won't get laid later on.

Well we went from whole milk to 2% to 1% to whatever the hell it is the cafeteria serves now.... pretty sure its malk - so bad the kids dont take them anymore they just buy Gatorade by the bucketful now. They also seem to have located the worst tasting fat-free salad dressing the universe and are importing it by the tanker truck load.

Well it's got electrolytes, so they'll be fine.

USDA has (twice) attempted to declare ketchup a vegetable. They'll serve public school kids anything.

These are school lunches. They're for 10 year olds. 10 year olds will eat pizza and french fries each and every single day, given the choice. Your argument may be valid concerning establishments that serve adults, but kids need guidance. How many kids are forced to finish their dessert before earning a chance to eat vegetables? They can't be trusted to make appropriate dietary choices, which is why schools need to step in.

My kids school actually employs cafeteria workers who make the lunches from scratch, or it's at least prepared there. It was one of their selling points when we were looking at schools to enroll into. They do a wonderful job, too. The food is delicious.
I think that is something that schools should get back to doing.

That's what schools do. They manage to make already boring healthy food even more nasty, and even more unhealthy.

They serve kids crap. Not saying that we didn't eat it but it starts on building good habits. Attempting to help the kids at school should not be frowned upon we all know parents take little responsibility.

As the husband of a lunchroom lady, I can state unequivocally that the pizza and french fries are eaten, the broccoli and carrots go straight to the trash.

Still, I don't know what the normal high school lunch tastes like. My school had the best cafeteria of any high school in the metro area.

Where the hell do you find a school like that??!? I mean, I went to a school that had a culinary program so we got good stuff all the time (we still had to pay but it was cheap!). Are you talking about a grade school?

Harv72b: Ketchup is a vegetable, goddammit.

I remember that. Thanks Reagan!

My high school lunch menu:

Monday hamburgers
Tuesday veal
Wednesday macaroni
Thursday cheesesteaks
Friday pizza

Sides like fries, pretzels every day. Vegetables? Not really.

This was private school so presumably we didn't have the same food regulations.

Funny story, one day I was out back of the school in the morning and saw a truck making a delivery to the cafeteria. The boxes of food said "NOT GRADE A BUT EDIBLE".

(And yes I'm aware of the snopes article on such things, I know what I saw.)

Perhaps a casserole, or other kinds of dish that directly incorporate the vegetables might be the way to go?

Listen, you can make the kids healthy lunches, make everything from scratch, be a decent cook (the school cafeteria I worked in made pretty good food), but if the kids don't want to eat it, they just throw it in the trash. it is always a delicate balancing act between giving them something they will eat, and something that is not deep-fried chocolate. You can't give them spaghetti every single day.

That's all it is. It's not that complicated. If you think a school kid won't throw an entire school lunch into the garbage, then whine about how the food sucks and they're hungry, go visit your local school one day.

Pizza? Fries? When the fark did school lunches start serving those more than once a month? I remember it being a big deal when pizza day came around. I remember lots of salisbury steak, chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes with cream of chicken soup being used as gravy, tater tots and the like, but very little fries and pizza. I agree on the salt though, school lunches were full of it.
