Every generator I've ever seen had a warning label on it that told you not to use it inside. Most of the labels I've seen were similar to the one below.

I don't believe it. Next you're gonna tell me that charcoal grills aren't to be used in the kitchen.

I'm feeling Darwinesque. Even "primitive" societies knew to CUT A FARKING HOLE IN THE ROOF. When I'm in Alabama over the Xmas holidays there are always cases where a trailer full of rednecks turns all pretty pink and dead from carbon monoxide poisoning, etc.

some generators are just too big to fit indoors anyway.

I see the problem with this, you have to hook it up to the power grid of the house some how and most people don't know how to setup a water proof sealed power cable that connects to anyplace but the main breaker downstairs. Also when you need to use it is when the weather outside is really really cold, or in a hurricane. So being outside is a bad idea as well. I wonder if there is some way of piping the exhaust out of a house while keeping it inside so you can operate it by hand.

Last time for that guy, that's for damn sure...

Awesome work subby, I'm sure everyone considering using these indoors just read your PSA and realized just how foolish they are. Good thing we caught it the last time you said it right?

I'm pretty confident I could build box in my living room maybe 4-8 feet on each side with 2x4's, wrap it with some heavy duty plastic sheeting, tape it up good, have probably 10-12" ducting going in and out of the box that run outside, and probably a decent fan on each pipe. but you're probably looking at hundreds of watts to move enough air to make that work. I'd have carbon monoxide detectors around, but no reason that shouldn't work, but if you do it wrong you die so nobody will recommend you do it. probably a fire hazard too.

Luckily gas-powered generators always come with nice quiet mufflers so people don't feel obligated to operate them behind closed doors.

thesubliminalman: I can't put em up my butt?

If you can fit it up there, carbon monoxide poisoning is probably the least of your worries at this point.

theorellior: I don't believe it. Next you're gonna tell me that charcoal grills aren't to be used in the kitchen.

For some reason, this power outage has people desperate. So far, I've seen people who are heating their homes with the burners on their gas stoves, people running generators in basements and garages, and scariest...a charcoal grill burning in a child's room for heat. Almost 300 ppm of CO there. They're lucky the kid isn't dead.

And it isn't like it's below freezing and death is threatening. My house hasn't dropped below 49 degrees. I can't believe how these people can't suck up a few days of minor convenience without doing something completely insane.

2011-11-04 10:35:34 PM
I don't plan on running any gas generators, or even have one for that matter. But this story reminded me that I should go ahead and replace all my smoke detectors, I only have one carbon monoxide detector that is a little old, so I should probably replace it with 3 for each level of the house. You can never be too careful, a friends uncle died one night due to a faulty furnace, they didn't have a carbon monoxide detector.

/adding this to my things to get tomorrow list.

A Spring Garden Road resident, though, said JCP&L representatives and crews made it clear to her and others on more than one occasion earlier this week that, since only about 20 people live in the neighborhood, repairs to downed power lines nearby were not a priority there.

"We've been told before, like during Irene, that there's not enough people on the road," Victoria Todd said.

She called the company's response to the outage, particularly from crews assessing damage nearby, irresponsible and arrogant.

"They just said we were way down on the list," Todd said. "I have a feeling if the Stephenses didn't perish, I wouldn't have power."

Holy shiat, what a biatch. She's trying to use their death to get a faster response the next time the power goes out.

I never knew anyone who did that, but I knew a guy who put gasoline in a kerosene heater.

If I had a stake in the CO alarm industry I'd be clamoring for a law to mandate their installation ala smoke detectors.

/only source of CO in this place would be a house fire

Those things can cost upwards of $25.

They bought the generator "in case the power goes out".
Power goes out, they have to use it, to justify the purchase.

Using it wisely, however, is another thing.

Some states require them, but only in new construction/rentals/major remodels. In a new home/major remodel in my region, you need one on every floor, linked to the other alarms in the house. They also require a smoke alarm on every floor and in every bedroom. Thus a CO alarm going off in the basement (from a malfunctioning furnance) will set off all the alarms in the house (even the smoke detectors in the bed room)

The only bad thing about CO alarms is that they only last 7 years. Most will start beeping/going off at that point in order to force you to purchase a new one.

costs 10k, but if you got it it's a sweet way to go. 1-4k for a nice quiet honda portable is pretty awesome too.

that box would bust into flames in a matter of hours.

Genny enclosures must be metal.
