Jamie Foxx doesn't get too many special treats. But this morning he's getting a very special treat. Private Swofford here is going to play reveille for him. Okay, Swofford, play reveille.

I would have called it for Damon Wayans.

Talk about good timing. I was at the gym today grunting through a regiment, 3/4th's of the way through I stop to use the butterfly machine and there's some 20's-ish down syndrome kid preparing to work the leg curls machine. He's getting ready, going into that bent over thing to enter the machine, I approach from the right and rear at least 5 feet away since the machines are relatively close together. He looks at me from up under his shoulder with one of the most ferocious sneers I've ever seen come from anybody. For, from what I can tell, absolutely no reason. I nod, he goes about his business.

But I thought the DS folk were supposed to be a kind and simple race. It was like I stuck my hand in his food owl while he was eating. I'm honestly surprised he didn't growl. Or bite.

So anyway, long story short, I didn't make eye contact and didn't turn my back on him. Just put my hands up a bit and backed away slowly so as not to anger him further and possibly provoke an attack.

It was weird.

Food bowl. Food bowl.

Owl's are food, but they don't hold food. Just bones fur and feathers and something that smells sour.

People with Down Syndrome have personalities, too. Just because they are portrayed as happy-all-the-time doesn't mean you won't piss them off. My husband worked with people with developmental disabilities for many years, and he has told me many stories. People with DS are human: they laugh, cry, get angry, get snarky, lie, fake stuff, love, and get tickled by stuff just like you do.

I'm down for that. Don't see too many black retards. Even rarer are Asian retards. I can see the resemblance. You can tell they're siblings.

Yeah, I know, I was mostly being facetious. I've got an ex coworker friend with a down's syndrome niece, she's usually pretty happy but she'll be the first one to sternly correct you for bad manners. :)

How come there's not a Palin involved in any of this?
