Canada doesn't tax lottery winnings or other "windfalls". The interest rate thing, yeah, you could maybe retire on $2mil at 3% interest but it wouldn't be a luxurious lifestyle.

No taxes on lottery winnings in Canada. He gets the full $2m.

poxic: Canada doesn't tax lottery winnings or other "windfalls".

Really? They pay no income tax on that stuff?

And investing at 3% just keeps your stash up with inflation. Spend ANY money from that whatsoever and it's shrinking.

Maybe the rules in Canada are different. I would think in the US that anyone that worked at a TV station that's so involved with the lottery would be automatically disqualified from winning.

I thought this the first time I saw it.

And how does the on-scene reporter not see the name and immediately go "Oh, Fark! That's Barry!" Instead, she muffs the the name (Deli?). Does she not work with this guy?

Squire figured it out. He's a genius, that one.

It was a hospital lottery fundraiser. The guy bought a ticket to support the hospital because his daughter had leukemia and was treated there. The truly awesome part is that he won't have to spend the 2 million paying back hospital bills!

$2 million Canadian is $1,966,182 USD.

3% interest makes $58,985.46 a year.

79.63% of Americans make less than $57,500 a year.

$2 million would be awesome-sauce.

No kidding. What an idiot. You're live on TV announcing the name of a 2 million dollar winner, and you barely give it a glance and mispronounce it, and so does the other idiot with you.

I feel sorry for any Barry Delaney from Port Moody who bought a ticket!

Sure, you could live in a trailer park and never have to work again. But just because a lot of Americans are living like that doesn't make it great living. Has we really lowered our standards that much?

It's definitely a nice amount, but if you did quit your day job you're an idiot. It barely buys a house in most suburbs. Plus you have to remember the "pay off your friends and family factor". If your parents have a mortgage, you'll probably pay that off, probably through a few hundred $k at each of your siblings, etc.

Anyway, what most people who are already making a professional income will do with $2M is pay off their house, spread the money around, put the rest away for their kids. And keep working.

You could live a very decent life off of $60k, tax free. It won't be private jets and Maui every weekend, but it's a comfortable living. A lot of people would accept that in exchange for not having to work every day.

I would probably keep my job, but I can easily understand those that would take the easy, simple life.

Besides, as someone else mentioned, getting only 3% interest off of ~$2 million is foolish. Even if you bumped that up to 5%, that would be $98,309 a year, tax free. You are now earning more in interest than 93% of Americans make a year. That is retirement money, hands down. For a guaranteed $98k a year, I would almost definitely quit my job.

He's Canadian, good luck finding something in Metro Vancouver for $300,000.

Also, it's worth noting he has a choice between two houses, each of which comes with two cars or the money. The wonderful tax-free money.

Two things: in Canada there are only a few urban areas and they are all very expensive. You won't get a family home near any interesting place for under $800k, and that would be average suburban home -- you wouldn't feel like you'd won a lottery. My parents just sold a lot with no house and no sewer in a very undesirable neighborhood that is over an hour from downtown and got $450k for it.

Secondly: you have to define how you want to live. This guy is already making $300k per year and probably living an urban lifestyle. Going to a $300k house up country somewhere is going to be a major downgrade in lifestyle.

I'm just saying that most of you guys have really low standards. If you never want to buy a new car, have an exotic vacation, and want to do all your own housework, landscaping and house repair, while living away from exciting urban centers, then fine retire with $58k per year. I understand it is possible to live like that, but again it would be a serious downgrade for any professional.

You forgot taxes...but even so I know *I* could pay off my house and without a mortgage I could easily live off of ...let's call it $30k.... per year. That's $2,500 per month, after taxes mebbe $2k. I wouldn't be living like a king but it would be far from uncomfortable

1. everyone keeps talking as if he won $2m cash. he won a HOUSE valued at $2m
2. i'm pretty sure if i won $2m cash i COULD find a way to not have to work ever again. not saying i WOULD but i COULD! without gaining a dime of interest on the money i could equal my average GROSS (that's pre-tax and pre-deduction, in case you didn't know) income for 40 years. if i actually brought home every dime of my gross pay i would not be rich but i'd be able to eat many more steaks and take more trips

No, he has the choice between two houses, each valued at roughly 2.4 million each and the cash prize.
