FTA: McKenzie told police he went into the woods Thursday night before it became dark and he could not find his way out. He removed his shirt, coat and boots after they became wet.

He trespassed, got lost, got wet, became hypothermic, and was found by firefighters. So, yes, he was cited for trespassing. I see no problem with any of this.

Stupidity should be punished. He should be grateful that his punishment was a citation for trespassing, not a slow death from hypothermia or a quick death from a spooked neighbor with a shotgun.

The cops showed up. That means that somebody - it doesn't matter who - gets arrested/cited.

The article doesn't make it clear what happened. Did he:

A) Get lost, go crazy, THEN trespass?
B) or trespass, then get lost and go crazy?

If it's B, then he definitely deserves the ticket. If it's A, then perhaps a little bit of mercy wouldn't be inappropriate.

FTFA: was rescued this morning in a massive search after someone heard his calls for help.

If he *hadn't* trespassed, would someone have been near enough to hear his cries for help?

He was also cited for trespassing, Summerhays said.

Gotdamn cops! WTF! Cite this guy for collaps... Hey, wait a minute. Did they cite him for trespassing for coming out of the woods, hypothermic, and then collapsing on private property, or did they cite him for being a farking idiot, trespassing in someone else's woods, unprepared for the conditions, getting lost, and having to be rescued?

Because it makes a tiny bit of a difference in my level of outrage.

2011-11-04 05:05:19 PM
He may not have been trespassing when he began his hike, but he got lost and then trespassed.

If that's the case, the cops are dicks. No. Cops are always dicks, but from the sound of it this should have been a Darwin Award winner rather than a search and rescue.

2011-11-04 05:07:51 PM
When people are cited for trespassing, usually there's indication that he was on someone's personal, private property. This article implies no such thing, though it may intentionally be "vague."

Also, there is almost always a "request" for charges to be filed by a person (unless there are exacerbating circumstances, such as a prowler whose whereabouts were "unknown" to a property owner). As in, you're not going to be cited for trespassing for crossing over someone's unmarked property line, but you WILL be cited if you are told to leave and don't do so, or if you "stay" on said property, or are there to potentially commit a more serious crime.

You can't seriously expect cops to go after dangerous criminals instead.

2011-11-04 05:09:42 PM
It may seen asinine to us subby, but the property was probably posted. You have to understand that when you post your property with the local sheriff and someone trespasses, a police officer must cite someone found on the property without the owner's consent with trespassing. One would think they could let this one slide, but we don't know the specifics. This guy was wearing camo and may have been poaching on the property. He may have done it many times and the owner wanted it stopped.

But the important lesson is that unless you're an expert woodsman with compass and at least shelter gear, it's not a good idea to go into a wood alone, especially if you aren't familiar with it. When the sun starts going down, it is very easy to become disoriented and lost, especially in hilly country. This is quite common.

There's no indication that this is public land. Public land typically has the words State, National, Federal, or Preserve in the name or is simply called BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land. My guess is that the reporter shortened "forest in Allegan County" to "Allegan County forest".

Get Lost: //I just would like to know what drug he was using, that made him walk into the forest before dark and then remove warm clothes, cause they got wet

Drug? The latter is a textbook case of hypothermia.

Granted, he probably WAS on something, causing him to go into the woods. Then again, every so often there are idiots who go walking in a local public park near dusk and end up getting lost until the next morning. Of course, temperatures in this are tend to be less extreme than Michigan.

puffy999: When people are cited for trespassing, usually there's indication that he was on someone's personal, private property. This article implies no such thing, though it may intentionally be "vague."

Most public parks I've seen have a "Closed after 8pm/sundown/whatever" sign posted at the entrances. If you're there after the posted time, you're trespassing.

Cotton, when wet, will pull heat away from your body faster than simply wearing nothing at all. Wool and most synthetic materials don't have that problem, which is why you should never ever ever wear cotton when doing anything outdoorsy.

The cops boss says gotta make their time worthwhile.
Pretty much every involvement by the cops now must result in some sort of ticket, or the cop gets a bad performance review.
Even if the ticket gets tossed or if the recipient dies in the hospital later.

Once upon a time it was about 'quotas', but that made the cops look bad so now it's all about premonitions and maybe keeping your job.

Seriously.

I was walking on a trail at a lake near my house and i wasn't paying attention to the time. The sun went below the horizon and I hadn't a clue where i was. I knew that I was less than 1/4 mile from the park's parking lot, the lake, or somebody's back yard so I knew I wasn't going to die but 10 minutes of "I have no idea which way to go" was a little freaky.

It's amazing how woods and darkness will screw up your sense of direction

Ticket books. They're like checkbooks, only they work in reverse.

I can't think of one instance where I've been ticketed for anything (parking or moving) that was for something that really impacted safety. Every ticket has been for petty bullshiat type stuff. Ju$t the poli¢e prote¢ting and $erving.

The cops wonder why they're no longer respected like other public servants. Fear is innate; respect is earned. The days of the "friendly" police officer are, sadly, long gone. Ticket-happy, taser-happy, deadly-force-happy bullies.

Ha, you city folk. There are usually at least two reasons for citing someone for trespass in a situation like this.

The first is so that the cops have a reason to make the guy get into the ambulance. By the time someone is so hypothermic they've taken off all their clothes, they'll often be in a state where they'll think they're okay once they're found: "No, I don't need paramedics, I'll be fine if you just give me some coffee," or something like that. Rather than waste more time trying to argue with freezing crazy people, police will arrest them so they can legally force them into the ambulance.

The other reason is so, when the guy warms up and regains his senses, he appreciates the seriousness of wandering off into the woods alone in the late fall and getting lost so people have to mount a huge search to find him. As all the search&rescue people here on Fark know, we tend to frown on risking our lives for others' mindless stupidity.

Yes, because spending the night with half your clothes and having hypothermia wouldn't have taught him a thing. We might have read about him next week if it wasn't for that ticket.
