While Warner Brothers holds the licensing rights to the Guy Fawkes mask, several protesters said they were using foreign-made copies to circumvent the corporation.

Fark the corporations! I bought my mask from a Malaysian sweatshop!

FTA: One was in the left hand of 32-year-old Jason J. Cross - right under a protest sign. He had 20 more stashed in his tent, to be sold at $5 apiece.
"I had 10 here yesterday, and I sold out!" he said.
Cross said he'd purchased 100 of the Chinese-made masks online.

And he's protesting against capitalism?

/Unless he's selling them at cost of course.....

But history books didn't lead to the mask's popularity: A nearly 30-year-old graphic novel and a five-year-old movie did.

Huh. And here I thought it was a faceless stick figure guy with terrible luck and a garbage can.

This is stupid! I much prefer the masks to be used by Anonymous.

Guy Fawkes was a religious nutjob who tried to overthrow the English monarchy and establish a tyrannic Catholic theocracy. He wasn't fighting injustice like some dashing revolutionary, he was a fundamentalist terrorist who sought power and control and fark everyone else. Remember that, as you celebrate this momentous occasion.

But now he's a romantic revolutionary like Che Guevara, and I blame /b/, Alan Moore, and historically illiterate anarchist dickheads everywhere.

The thing is, those masks are only available on the WB studios online shop (I think) so unless they handmake one, they're supporting a huge business, which they're supposed to be against.

Guy Fawkes was a freakin terrorist.

Just like that damned farm boy and his droids.
Consorted with other known terrorists, namely Generals Kenobi and Yoda. He also dealt with the known criminals Han Solo and Chewbacca. Plus he conspired with known traitor and terrorist mastermind former Senator Leia Organa.

and this is what the kids hold up as heroes these days!

I thought the popularity of the masks was due to the protests against $cientology. If their identities were to be discovered, the CO$ would harass, sue, or even kill them. Anonymous needed to conceal their identities, and the Guy Fawkes masks were easier/cooler/lulzier than the green face hood.

/Guy Fawkes was a terrorist, and not worthy of the fame he gets. However, he was the first person to enter parliament with honest intentions, a well thought out plan, and the means to carry it out. (I probably messed up that quote).

Bears Repeating.

The fact that there are Brits wearing the mask is baffling, they should know better; don't they remember what they learnt in history class?

I know, but I was trying to quote an age old saying about him and the nature of politics. I wouldn't say his intentions were honest, either.

Too big to fail banks don't really represent true capitalism, but rather are a corruption of the system. That is what most of the protesters are up in arms about, although I'm sure there probably are at least a few socialists as part of the group. Overall they are just tired of Wall Street pocketing the profits and socialising the losses.

He won't be doing that.
It's much easier to call them dirty hippies and hypocrites for using cellphones and claim they don't know why they're protesting than it is to actually listen to what they have to say or do a modicum of research.

It's also much easier to come in here talking about the historical Guy Fawkes and calling people stupid than it is to read the article which discusses the cultural change the symbol of his mask has undergone in the last 25 years.

And the English Monarchy at the time wasn't a "tyrannic Protestant theocracy"? In Guy Fawkes' defense, the monarchy started it, by murdering thousands of Catholics in horrifc ways, depriving the rest of their property and civil rights, all so Henry VIII could get a little strange...

I'd call that self defense

Well thought out != perfect. Even an excellent plan can fail, for any number of reasons. Fawkes's was rather less than excellent. but I'll give him "well-thought-out."

Some used Fawkes as a symbol for putting limits on state power. Others held him up as a freedom fighter.

Yikes this is some awful journalism. If he had actually researched this don't you think he'd have a little more to say about it?

They probably don't teach any more how Guy Fawkes was a Papist terrorist who wanted to create instability so the Spanish could set up a puppet king. In the name of sensitivity to the choir-boy molesters Catholics.

I always thought the mask meant they were copying V, not Guy Fawkes. At this stage, that's pretty much what they're doing for all intents and purposes.

I think you need to study your English history a bit more. There weren't very many clean hands on any side for about 600 years.
