Don't people know that we are supposed to ignore the Jenner's and the Kardashian's until they do something worthy of our interest? And by something I mean something substantial like writing a novel; or winning the Olympics or something.

It really is one of the most insulting terms ever created.

Lando Lincoln: It really is one of the most insulting terms ever created.

Well, kinda. but it comes from the barter tradition of native american cultures. they expected something in return for every "gift."

When your culture exchanges gifts, there's no need for the "quotation marks." White folks expected Indians to just give stuff to them, and acted surprised when told that they should reciprocate. Never mind that our idea of reciprocation was, let's see now, about a thousand dollars worth of trade goods for Manhattan, or smallpox blankets for tribal land near Fort Pitt, or reservations for those that survived our attempt at genocide.

"Indian giver" is a friggin' reprehensible piece of old-school racism. It's always amusing to see some clueless moron pull it out and actually end up surprised that someone would take offense at it.

I thought the smallpox blankets thing was a myth. Something considered by the British but never implemented?

If memory serves, we were even trying to inoculate Native Americans against smallpox but the inoculations were making them sick as well because they were based on cowpox, which is something else the NAs had no resistance against.

Either way, Kardashian's suck.

JERRY: Well, why would I assume. I never assume. Leads to assumptions.

WINONA: (laughs) Oh, by the way. That TV Guide I gave you, I need it back.

JERRY: Why?

WINONA: Well, I'm doing a report on minorities in the media, and I wanted to use
that interview with Al Roker.

JERRY: Well, it's too late. I gave it to Elaine, and she's already on her way to
give it to George's father.

WINONA: Jerry, I really need it back. It, it is mine.

JERRY: You can't give something and then take it back. I mean, what are you...
(catches himself)

WINONA: What?

JERRY: A uh, a person that uh...

WINONA: A person that what?

JERRY: Well, a person that gives something and then they're dissatisfied and
they wish they had, had never uh...

WINONA: And?

JERRY: ...give, given it to the person that they originally gave it to.

WINONA: You mean like, an Indian giver?!

JERRY: I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with that term.

it's a term that most people learn in kindergarten, usually over a candy-related offense. i think it's more amusing when someone calls out the person using it, and everyone else is like "what the fark is this guy's problem?"

What do you expect, it wasn't a proper contract, just some ******-rigged deal.

Seriously, I never have cause to express this concept since, well, none of my friends are dicks. But if I did, I'd use something more like "European giver", since whites have had a history of giving Natives what seemed like crappy scrub land... then taking it back when we needed it later (ie. after discovering uranium there).

Sure they did, they fought amongst themselves, tribe against tribe all the time, they just didn't expect a huge amount of limey honkeys to show up and take all the land, burn all the trees to farm tobacco and later on shoot any Indian they saw on sight.

2011-11-04 02:58:41 PM
As i understand it, anyway, the term relates to the idea that in at least some native american cultures, if the recipient of the gift did something reprehensible that made them ex post facto unworthy of the gift, it was normal to reclaim the thing you gave them.

but it says indian in it, it can't possibly be OK to say anymore!

That's not what all of the white settlers did. First of all, the notion that they "took their land" is distorted. 99% of the land of North America wasn't being used by anyone, but that mattered not to the natives who unfairly claimed everything for themselves because they didn't want the white man living near them. They didn't want to live in peace.

Could be because they were there in the farking first place. How would you like it if a bunch of assholes suddenly showed up and booted you from where your family and tribe had lived time out of mind? Plus the white has yet to honor a single goddamn treaty they made.

I worked with a European-American (don't want to upset anyone even though he's technically not of European descent) who went to his homeland of England and complained to a pair of black girls about how it was "weird there were so many white people."

He also changed the term "jerry-rig" to something I can't remember. I think it was "jury-rig." I wanted to beat the white off of his ass.

It's the same folks who get worked up over the Washington Redskins.

The same folks who get worked up over using the term "Indian" instead of "Native American", when every single Indian person I've ever known refers to themselves in English as Indians and doesn't give a rat's ass if you do the same.
