The other day I was walking around with my clock in my hand. People didn't seem to mind.

I never did understand why people still wear watches when everyone has a phone.

I hate it when people clockblock me in bars. It's so annoying.

during the french revolution, revolutionaries took aim at the clocks, realizing the evil they laid upon society.

large public clocks were a mechanism and symbol of the dehumanization of the industrial revolution. The clock signified to the laborer that you no longer provide your service, now your provide your time. It was a creation of the factory baron to synchronize the lives of his lessers; it became the chiming sound of your soul slowly eroding alongside the clang of your new metal machine music.

There's an ad for expensive watches that has an interesting motto that might explain things: "Time is only an excuse".

Amusingly enough, people went from pocket watches, to wrist watches and now back to a device that you keep in your pocket. Sure it does other stuff but still, keeping the clock in the pocket.

I was an usher in a wedding a few years ago, and the groom bought all his groomsmen watches. It is awesome, and I wear it all the time.

Also, it's much easier to look at your watch than to pull your phone out. You can do it so much more subtly in meetings, too.

I hate when I forget my watch and have to take my phone out of my pocket just to see what time it is, especially if I have something in my hands. with a watch all you have to do is glance at it.

I'm a grown man so I don't care about looking cool anymore.

Rock out with your clock out??

As somebody who makes a living from watches and clocks, I'm getting a kick out of somebody who is interested in spending money on clocks. Because that is good for me.

I wear a watch because it's small and easy to carry/wear.
I wear a watch because I don't carry a phone with me when I'm at home.
I wear a watch because even when I *do* have my phone on me, it's much easier to glance at my wrist than pull out my phone.

Don't you hate it when the cute girl at the bar notices you are wearing a watch, comes to ask for the time, but then remembers she has her phone with her?

What a clock-tease...

I still wear a pocket watch. I've never liked wearing wrist watches.

There's nothing especially "cool" about my wristwatch, and I don't pretend there is.

However, it is still far easier to look down at my wrist than it is to fish my phone out of my pocket and turn on the screen.

Looking at my wrist is something I can still do when both hands are full of stuff, and I can do it discretely in a meeting.

Plus it requires close to zero maintenance. My phone needs to be recharged every night. My watch battery only needs to be replaced once a year or less.

I won't carry a phone with me. I could set my ham radio handheld to display the time, and I did one time when I was out hunting and had left my watch at home, but much like pulling a stupid phone out of my pocket, it's a lot more work than just glancing at my wrist.

Digital clocks displaying time and temperature are often comically wrong about both.

If only there was a way to fix that...

Car_Ramrod: it's much easier to look at your watch than to pull your phone out. You can do it so much more subtly in meetings, too.

Not only that, but an analog clock face (which you can of course replicate on a smart phone) gives a good graphical representation of time. Much better than digits.

Very romantic sounding but wholly inaccurate. Public clocks predate the 19th century industrial revolution by centuries (a fact you illustrate yourself by citing their existence in 18th century revolutionary France), They were most certainly NOT the creation of "factory barons".
