How many thousands of people are on a large cruse ship? And a large percentage of them elderly. I would think that there would be deaths all the time. Now a younger guy like that? My guess is drugs

Hey, when I saw that a cruise ship had done something to two dead passengers, I just assumed "dock" was a euphemism.

You should do a GIS for "docking". Safesearch off, of course.

Actually, make it for "guys docking" or something like that, otherwise you'll just get a bunch of ipods and shiat.

You'd be dead too if you got farked by a cruise ship.

I was thinking the same. It's like those "OMG a guy died of a heart attack in a marathon" articles. If you put 40,000 people in the same place for several hours, on average, somebody's gonna die. Every cruise I've ever taken has had a medical emergency. There's always some code they use to announce it to avoid saying "holy shiat there's a guy having a heart attack at dinner," but it's not like it's not obvious when someone comes on the PA and says "ALPHA ALPHA ALPHA DINING ROOM DECK SEVEN ALPHA ALPHA ALPHA." And if you're in the middle of the ocean and need a cath lab, you're probably hosed.

We had two people die while on our cruise, but they died on excursions, so the cruise ship refused to take custody of the bodies. In St. Thomas it wasn't a big deal for the friends of the person that died to stay there, but in Grenada they just left the wife stranded there because if she would have left chances of getting her husband's body back were slim to none (he died of a heart attack because it took the ambulance an hour and a half to get to him). Grenada isn't too keen on Americans, so I'm sure she had a rough time with it. I'm guessing these people died on the ship itself.

Most cruise ships (especially the bigger ones) don't carry any defibrillators and only have very basic medical centers to handle colds and small injuries. They don't want to take the responsibility for emergencies. They even state when you buy a tickets to do so at your own risk. If an emergency happens on see it would take hours to get you to any port with decent medical services.

Not that I have an major medical concerns, but we went on the cruise to scuba dive and did around 14 dives. Now if I plan a dive vacation I make sure we are staying somewhere with a hyperbaric pressure chamber nearby just in case something happens (which is doubtful because we are very careful). I've been wary of doing any cruises if we plan to dive since.

I just got back from a 5-week cruise through the South Pacific on Saturday. We had 2,000 passengers and the average age on board was 70 - so yeah, there were plenty of medical issues and a couple people kicked the bucket (2 died - 6 had to be left at different island hospitals). On the 'behind-the-scenes' tour, I snapped this photo below deck:

They explained that this room is also used to store the fresh flowers onboard. You could tell when someone had died, as they have less room in the storage refrigerator and have to use more flowers than usual.

Please explain to me why people go on cruises- I usually hate to expound on things that I've not experienced, but judging from reading about/talking to folks I know who've gone on cruises, it sounds like a waking nightmare.

Someone please explain the draw.

You just have to pick the right cruise line (maybe NSFW).

A spokesman for the Suffolk County District Attorney says the probe involving experts from the office of the chief examiner showed a 67-year-old woman from Tiverton, R.I., and a 23-year-old man from Littleton, N.H., were not murdered aboard the Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Where were they murdered then?

I've done some 14-15 cruises now, so I guess I have enough experience to attempt an answer.

For the most part, you get a 'autopilot' vacation. Once your onboard, you don't have to worry about hardly anything. All of your food is taken care of, your room is cleaned twice a day, lots of entertainment options available within 500 feet, and you get to have all the sights and sounds of a different country come to you (or more precisely, your ship arrives in new ports daily). If you want crowds, you can go to the big shows and meals. If you want to be left alone, book a room with a large outside deck and eat room service (available with a full menu, 24/7, no charge) - trans-Atlantic cruises are nice for this.

My brother is handicapped, and international travel or long flights are all but impossible for him - except for cruising, since the whole ship is accessible. That's why I've gone on so many cruises.

It all really comes down to what you're looking for and finding a cruise itinerary and line that matches your lifestyle. Examples of what you get on the different cruise lines:

High-energy kid cruise = Disney. These also work well for parents wanting to get some R&R, and dump the kids off with the kids program all day.

High-energy adult/college cruise (on the cheap) = Carnival. Get your drink on, party it up. The food isn't very good, but they're usually cheap.

A little more laid back in terms of partying, but still adventurous = Royal Caribbean. The food is decent; the itineraries still cater to adventure (scuba diving and such); A good middle age or established family cruise. Norwegian, Celebrity & Princess falls close to this, but slightly older in typical clientele.

Then you have the lower energy, high-class service cruise lines, usually more oriented towards retirees, long voyages (30+ days) and those wanting peace and quiet. Usually very expensive. These have gourmet food and unmatched service. The shore activities are low energy, but high-value; with highlights like a photography tour group of 6, led by a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer giving tips or 1-on-1 shoreline tours with a marine biologist and private boat. These include Holland America, Cunard, Windward.

Thanks so much for that. While it's not something I see my wife and I ever doing (we're more "adults only- lay on a beach for 8-10 days"-type folks- no children), it's knowledge I am glad to have.

Cheers and he're to being a good brother.

People die on cruise ships all the time. They usually store the bodies in the freezer (with the ice cream).

Many captains make a special effort to hide certain deaths from local authorities, pretending that all deaths occur "at sea", because it's expensive and almost impossible to get a body returned from some countries.

You're welcome. And of course, to each their own. I certainly enjoy that type of vacation, but I've taken a great liking to scuba diving in new spots/countries, going back to the cruise ship and relaxing in a hot tub, then laying out on deck tanning, and finally enjoying a steak dinner as room service; A simultaneously exciting and relaxing day, mostly free of the crowds and hub-bub. The next day, arriving in a new port and doing it all over again. IMO, other than sailing my own boat, that's just about the perfect vacation. I also enjoy photography in new places, here's some of my faves from the last trip:

I have a mental picture of an MS Paint tug boat getting the Eiffel Tower from two dudes with a plane crashing into the WTC in the background.

I'm not sure what is wrong with my brain, and I don't think medication can fix it.
