It may have been under the Republican's watch, but consider this: each Congress has its own problems to attend to, and it certainly didn't have time to correct every one of Clinton's furious efforts to handcuff and punish business.

Actually, Michelle, you retconning twunt, it came down to deregulation and greed. Betting on loans to fail, and passing them off before the game of financial hot potato before bad things happened.

That isn't Liberal. It isn't Conservative. It was about greed and stupidity. YOUR statements and trying to spin the events, that's MORE bone stoopid.

Congrats. You are working on a trifecta of dumb around the issue...

It is unfortunate that they can't be handcuffed and punished like other criminals, but that is one of the problems with corporations.

It is kind of hilarious that Republicans would try to blame a disaster caused by inadequate regulation on over-regulation.

Taking aim at government housing policies for the poor, Bachmann argued this week that "the federal government demanded politically correct loans be made by banks, and they demanded that the lending standards be lowered so that people who lacked credit-worthiness were given loans by banks, not necessarily because the banks wanted to give those loans."

The Securities and Exchange Commission can blame itself for the current crisis. That is the allegation being made by a former SEC official, Lee Pickard, who says a rule change in 2004 led to the failure of Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, and Merrill Lynch.

The SEC allowed five firms - the three that have collapsed plus Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley - to more than double the leverage they were allowed to keep on their balance sheets
and remove discounts that had been applied to the assets they had been required to keep to protect them from defaults.

The exemption would unshackle billions of dollars held in reserve as a cushion against losses on their investments. Those funds could then flow up to the parent company, enabling it to invest in the fast-growing but opaque world of mortgage-backed securities; credit derivatives, a form of insurance for bond holders; and other exotic instruments.

That makes absolutely no sense.

A rule change in 2004? When both houses of Congress and the presidency were Republican?

thismomentinblackhistory: Hasn't anybody told her that she doesn't have a chance anymore?

Not sure. Cain's out. Perry might be having a pro-longed stroke that hasn't been diagnosed yet. She might be the only Tea Party candidate in the race in a couple of months.

But even her dear Tea Party told her to pack it up.

His poll numbers have improved since the scandals. He ought to be out, but is not.

I sure wish I lived in a society where politicians suffered when they told such blatant, transparent lies.

He's just a residual political image burned into the retinas of the Tea Partiers. He's finished but everyone will need to blink a bit before the image fades. I predict Bachman isn't going anywhere fast, she's probably hoping to be someone's running mate. Cain will end his campaign this month I predict.

The polls on the scandal are only since the first allegations. Give it a few more days until the polling for the 3rd one gets here. And conservative blogs don't seem to be giving him quite the pass they were at first.

vpb: It is kind of hilarious that Republicans would try to blame a disaster caused by inadequate regulation on over-regulation.

Well, what do you expect from the party that fights for "over-taxed" Billionaires (whose tax rates are at record lows) while claiming the poorest Americans need to be taxed more?

That's the thing. Since he's a imaged burned on their retinas, when they blink, they see a white man. So their support for him grows.

If the free market worked the way conservatives thought it did, then it wouldn't matter whether there were overbearing regulations or not, the people in charge would still make the educated wise decisions that would lead to long-term success.

The fact that the moment a loophole for a short-term high-risk profit requiring unethical business practices pops up they all jump up and take it is evidence the regulation worked until it was removed, and that without it they would have acted like idiots.

What pisses me off the most is that most people who scream about free markets don't even understand what they mean, and can't define basic econ 101 terms, let alone see what was wrong about the repackaging of bad loans and essentially lying about their quality when they sold that debt and spread it around the financial system.

Like repealing Glass-Steagal? Or unleashing Larry Summers on any regulator who tried to do their job? Or renominating Alan Greenspan to Fed Chairman? Or signing NAFTA?

And if that long-term success is best found by canning American jobs and shipping them to China to avoid those regulations?

Whats frustrating is that you can't argue with these people. Show them statistics that demonstrate how the CRA could not have possibly caused this and they'll clam that the statistics are invalid because the source is librul. Show them how the CRA only applied to large banks, not small banks or mortgage companies and they'll insist that small banks and independent mortgage companies played no role in the crisis. Its enough to make you crazy.

Bachmann's 2-point strategy to regain the support of the baggers:

1) "I hate Messicans more than anyone else!"
2) "Obama is a time-traveling Muslin!"

Even funnier: Republicans claim that the financial collapse was all because of those damned liberals who used Federal power to force banks to loan money to minorities, so really, you should blame all your financial problems on minorities, and then they wonder, hey, how come minorities don't vote for us?

Starting Afghanistan war
TARP
Starting the Guns walking programs under Bush

What can't Obama do?

I wonder when the first "economy started slowing down the second Democrats won Congress, they are at fault no matter what policies did or did not contribute to the crash" post will be.

/for people claiming Keynesianism is false, Republicans sure put a lot of faith in animal spirits (in the form of the party makeup of Congress) and tax cuts stimulating the economy.

I need to be reminded that that's real from time to time. My brain just sort of rejects that information. It's just too implausible.

I have a feeling that all this public fellating of the rich is going to end up costing the republicans, while the democrats will quietly accept the campaign donations and tell us about how they feel our pain.
