FTFY.

It's really weird, but of all the times the Orioles have wallowed in futility, this is the most embarrassed I've been as an Orioles fan. I'd wish Peter Angelos a quick death but I know one of his sons would quickly take up the reins and somehow make the franchise worse for wear.

fark me.

The O's already have a GM.

/friend was a clubbie for the D-Backs years ago....saw Buck measuring the height of the players's socks before games, to ensure compliance with his baseball rulebook. antoher story was a pre or postgame buffet, they had ketchup in plastic bottles and buck ragged out the catering staff for minutes on end about how they had to have glass, not plastic bottles.

rickythepenguin: to ensure compliance with his baseball rulebook.

i heard Luis Gonzales or perhaps Mark Grace tell a story on sprots radio about Buck's "Baseball Manual" or whatever he called it....it was this huge 3 ring binder, inches thick. everything about uniform requirements, height of socks, dress code, etc. Players dreaded it.

Bob Brenly's first meeting as D-Backs manager, he ceremonially threw Buck's manual into the garbage can. He produced a bar napkin with a couple of scrawls on it, and said, "this is my baseball manual. just two rules: Be on time, give maximum effort."

Well, one thing the O's can look forward to. If they actually get a GM who is successful, he's gonna bolt outta there faster than something something.

Yeah, ol' Buck does wear out his welcome pretty quick with that anal-retentive crap.

He wants to be owner, not GM. Angelos doesn't want him in the organization, but doesn't say it publicly because Cal makes him money on name alone.

If he grabs the GM slot, he'd still be able to be owner. May even have a better chance actually.

To be fair, just like the head coach job, the GM spot in Baltimore is going to be a really thankless task.

The organization's not going to overpay you to stay; they haven't shown the willingness to overpay top tier free-agents to come; and with the Yankees and Redsox in the division, there's a very good chance you'll NEVER win, regardless of how good a job you're doing.

So why put a 40% win rate black eye on your resume by spending time there?

stolibro: If he grabs the GM slot, he'd still be able to be owner. May even have a better chance actually.

Again, this isn't a matter of what Cal would do, this is a matter of Angelos not wanting to give Cal any say inside of the business.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/Ken-Rosenthal-Balitmore-Orioles-sh o uld-call-on-legends-for-advice-041910

Of course Cal took the high road and denied that Angelos is blocking him:
http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100419&conten t _id=9418508&vkey=news_bal&fext=.jsp&c_id=bal

But if you look at the actions of the Orioles vs. public statement, you'll see that Cal is on the outside and Angelos isn't planning on opening the door anytime soon.

2011-11-04 03:08:30 PM
It's absolutely pathetic. They knew since mid-season that MacPhail was most likely going to be stepping down, and Angelos moves along at his usual snail's pace. And you think any sports agent in his right mind would recommend their client sign here with this mess going on?

They'll promote Stockstill, the incompenent director of player development, and he'll make a wonderful incompetent GM. But at least he'll do Angelos' bidding without question, which is Pete's only real requirement for the job.

2011-11-04 03:18:23 PM
With so many younger coaches trying to crack the GM ranks, it's amazing how bad a team has to be to have 3 people (so far!) turn down the job.

As a Nats fan, I'd just like to agree with Baltimoreans on one sentiment, and one sentiment only:

fark Peter Angelos.

At least the Pirates broke down in the second half of the season. So we aren't saddled with the longest streak of losing seasons. My high school's football team endured 25 straight losing seasons and I'm a UVA fan, so futility is something I'm used to.

How did the Rays get out of futility? For a while we were always in 4th place, now the Rays have done a decent job of threatening the Old Firm's lock upon the top spots, pushing us back to 5th.

stpickrell: How did the Rays get out of futility?

Drafting well, accepting that you might have to have a few crappy years to build a good team, getting owners that let their GM have full control over operations...

you know, everything the Orioles don't do.

And, for that matter, was there ever a thread were we could laugh about the Dodgers throwing money at Juan Rivera?

NYRBill: can he still hit? was he signed for a low guaranteed salary?

1.25mil. But he has played exactly one game in the field since 2008 (and that was at third for a single pitch), yet it seems they might be using him to replace the injured Ryan Howard.

I'm not saying it's a BAD deal...I'm saying it's a FUNNY deal.

On the other hand, Juan Rivera is a funny bad deal. So, so bad.

The biggest embarrassment were local politicians trying to claim the colts and forcing the team to leave.

With close to 30-year-old memories of what great teams the Orioles used to produce, I know in my heart of hearts that as long as Angelos owns the team it shall never, ever compete for much of anything.

I still remember the day the Colts left, same day as the Air Florida flight hit the 14th Street Bridge.... Snow storm ect.... My best friend growing up was a huge Bart Starr/Colts fan... he was crushed on that turrible day....

O gawd... not this shiat again. Loser pulls up some news stories without looking at the entire situation in context and pounds his little hammer yet again.

If anyone else besides Robert Irsay owned The Baltimore Colts back then, they would never have left.

Enough with your revisionist BS.

Air Florida slams into the 14th St. Bridge on 1-13-82.
Irsay scampers out of Baltimore with The Colts on 3-28-84.

Here's all you need to know about Irsay. He took one of the (if not THE) best teams in professional football and took it to the cellar... The Colts only started to rebound once his son got involved. Irsay was a horrible owner and had no farking clue how to run an NFL franchise successfully. There's a reason pretty much 100% of the former players and coaches from The Baltimore Colts hated the guy... it wasn't because of the move, it was because he destroyed a once proud organization through his incompetence. If it weren't for someone else (his son) taking over it would have continued.

/threadjack over

Angelos needs to let it go. Seriously... the guy has absolutely NO VISIBLE PASSION TO WIN. One thing an owner has to have is passion... and passion to win.

The Raven's owner is farking awesome because he makes no bones about being 110% about winning. He is smart enough to keep quiet during the season and only do interviews and press conferences off-season.

Angelos can't get out of his own way and as a fan, I can't honestly believe he is even a fan of baseball at all... much less the O's.

That's horrible.

Good news, O's fans: they finally found someone who didn't turn them down. Sounds like your new GM is former Red Sox GM Dan Duquette.

Well, it appears that Angelos' incompetence doesn't stop in the front office. According to my lawyer, the Emperor also fancies himself as a restauranteur. The downside to this is he runs his staff into the ground, forcing long hours on them for the most miniscule crap (the CSB from counsel I was told was that he spent an entire night screaming at the closing staff for not vacuuming the floors properly or some bat-shiat crazy stuff like that).

/Full disclosure: Pirate fan, O's are their biatch in the WS H2H

though to be fair, Duquette is creditted with the turnarounds of the Expos and Red Sox. Not for making them winners, but for turning them around.

Oh, his track record is solid.

Except for the fact that, since the Red Sox fired him nearly 10 years ago, he hasn't been employed by any MLB team in any capacity at all. He's been setting up the Israeli Baseball League and running youth baseball camps.

I can't imagine that he has the best grip on what's going on in the league.

It gets better. According to Roch Kubatko @ MASN, Angelos (for whatever reason) decided that he didn't want to hire anyone recently fired by another MLB team. This policy led to them not interviewing Dave Littlefield, who was fired in 2007.

Not saying Dave Littlefield is a good GM (because he's not), but that's insane. Apparently, "recent" is a point in time between 5 & 10 years ago.

I believe I speak for most fans when I say that Cal would be better than Angelos. I'd rather have someone who cared about the franchise over profits then the other way around like it is now. Also you have the wrong analogy going on there. What we would want would be like the 'Skins replacing Snyder with Gibbs, which I'm sure most 'Skins fans wouldn't mind.

Dan Duquette is officially the Orioles new GM. I can't wait for him to sign Pedro.
