I AM OUTRAGED... that AIG would play Monopoly under some weird rules that would allow 2 hotels on Park Place.

What rules? This is the financial industry we're talking about.

Think of the worst company you have ever worked for.

Now multiply that by 100. Thats AIG (yeah i worked there ).

Never seen a company where the employees were more unhappy and paranoid. Saw lots of examples of IT people shoring up their "job security" by doing things that drastically reduced productivity.

2011-11-04 10:43:31 AM
this article is almost three years old and it was a much larger quarterly loss than 4.3 billion. Still, thanks for reminding me assholemitter.

I just negotiate way too aggressively - something about Monopoly makes me act like a dick. Probably the mercantile nature of the game, which is why the Blue family mainly plays Settlers now. And I have a beer, too, which helps me chill the fark out.

Monopoly brings out the hyper-aggressive/competitive dickhead in everyone.

They didn't have just ordinary undocumented code. They had entire undocumented frameworks.

2011-11-04 10:53:22 AM
Aww man.. now I want to play Monopoly.

2011-11-04 10:55:22 AM
Most games of Monopoly I have played in, the people playing did not want to play it properly.
They wanted money, usually $500, on Free Parking.
They wanted the tax money to go to the Free Parking pot.
They didn't want to auction properties.

So the games took forever to play. Monopoly is a money drain. Last one standing wins. But when you keep throwing money back into it, via the Free Parking pot, and delay the entry of a vast amount of property by refusing auctions on unwanted land it just stretches the game on and on.

Success at Monopoly almost always relies on that first trip around the board. Bad roll of the dice, and you're in jail while everyone else is buying property.

They didn't have just ordinary undocumented code. They had entire undocumented frameworks.

Bonus points if the variables had names like x, xx, xxx, z, zp, zzz, y, yy....

I recall that on my first software job (internship) some poor coworker was trying to rewrite and improve a sizable chunk of undocumented code where all of the variables were named after model train components.

The housing bubble is a money drain. You keep throwing more and more cheap money into it via low interest rates, home owner incentives, and bailouts and delay the exit of vast amounts of toxic assets by refusing to allow bankruptcy and the recession just stretches on and on.
