Also, if this part of the article was true:

There is no question that some people just deserve to lose their breathing privileges... like this scumbag and the guys that dragged James Byrd (sp?) behind a truck. The systematic flaws in general always bring me back, plus the "vengeance" aspect doesn't really do it for me.

But man does this motherf*cker need to get cut short.

I suspect that more criminals are caught because of them doing something dumb. than because of any actual police work.

I've said it many, many times- if you ask me in principle, I'll tell you I'm opposed to the death penalty. It's too arbitrary, it's impossible to reverse, it's disproportionately used against minorities... you know all the arguments against it. I'm not going to rehash them all here.

But then I read something like this, and immediately think "Well, that sumbiatch just needs to die".

This is kind of my feelings on the matter. In general, the death penalty should be discouraged and have numerous restrictions to ensure that it is used as rarely as possible. However, it should still always remain an option on the table for the most heinous crimes like this one.

Another example of this is the extremist guy from Norway a few months back. The man shot up and killed nearly 100 people, mostly kids, and the worst punishment he will likely see is twenty-something years in Norwegian white collar resort prison.

Set the speed of the disk so that a full rotation takes 30 seconds. 15 seconds with head underwater, 15 seconds where he can breath.

I do not think this person should be executed.

I think this person should be executed very slowly.

There is no high-minded reasoning for this, either. Simple vengeance and the closest thing to "justice" that can be delivered to someone so terrible combine to make the best of a worst-case scenario. This is one of those wrongs that cannot ever be made even close to right.

Also not interested in debating the death penalty as a whole, just interested in how it could be applied to this one guy right here in this situation.

Putting down a deformed animal for the safety of society isn't vengeance, it's pragmatic.

Most states have three strikes laws. But all that means is that the third felony is enhanced to a possible life sentence. Judges, juries and prosecutors can agree to or award less as a sentence. And even then, jails are so crowded that all but the very worst get paroled in less than half their sentence.

LWOP and execution are the only punishments that really punish people like this. And I'd hope for execution so he isn't a lifelong threat to guards and other inmates.

the_vegetarian_cannibal: The man shot up and killed nearly 100 people, mostly kids, and the worst punishment he will likely see is twenty-something years in Norwegian white collar resort prison.

It's difficult to cross boundaries like that when discussing incarceration and punishment in other countries. Norway is not like the U.S. Norway takes the approach that the individual convicted is still an individual who might be turned into a better person who can wind up benefiting and participating in normal society.

The U.S. takes the approach that the convicted is a certain dollar value that can be used as a resource in the human farming experiment we so jokingly call our "correctional system".

The difference between Norway and the U.S. when it comes to incarceration is already an enormous, virtually uncrossable gulf to begin with, when you toss in a special-level of psychopathy like that lunatic or this shiathead to boot the whole thing just goes entirely out the window.

Those laws cover violent felonies; armed robbery certainly qualifies but the others may be for misdemeanors. 3 misdemeanors does not a life sentence justify. If the other convictions were juicy, they'd have been detailed.

That's Cruel AND Unusual punishment. More appropriate:

Wire up a text-activated TASER to his scrotum, and give the number to the surviving family member of the girl he killed.

Oh, and set up a web cam.

Wow..reminds me of albert fish. He liked to taunt his victim's families too.

from wikipedia.

Six years later, in November 1933, an anonymous letter was sent to the girl's parents which led the police to Albert Fish. Mrs. Budd was illiterate and could not read the letter herself, so she had her son read it to her.[21] The unaltered letter is quoted below, complete with Fish's misspellings and grammatical errors:[10]

Dear Mrs. Budd. In 1894 a friend of mine shipped as a deck hand on the Steamer Tacoma, Capt. John Davis. They sailed from San Francisco for Hong Kong, China. On arriving there he and two others went ashore and got drunk. When they returned the boat was gone. At that time there was famine in China. Meat of any kind was from $1-3 per pound. So great was the suffering among the very poor that all children under 12 were sold for food in order to keep others from starving. A boy or girl under 14 was not safe in the street. You could go in any shop and ask for steak-chops-or stew meat. Part of the naked body of a boy or girl would be brought out and just what you wanted cut from it. A boy or girl's behind which is the sweetest part of the body and sold as veal cutlet brought the highest price. John staid there so long he acquired a taste for human flesh. On his return to N.Y. he stole two boys, one 7 and one 11. Took them to his home stripped them naked tied them in a closet. Then burned everything they had on. Several times every day and night he spanked them - tortured them - to make their meat good and tender. First he killed the 11 year old boy, because he had the fattest ass and of course the most meat on it. Every part of his body was cooked and eaten except the head-bones and guts. He was roasted in the oven (all of his ass), boiled, broiled, fried and stewed. The little boy was next, went the same way. At that time, I was living at 409 E 100 St. near-right side. He told me so often how good human flesh was I made up my mind to taste it. On Sunday June the 3, 1928 I called on you at 406 W 15 St. Brought you pot cheese-strawberries. We had lunch. Grace sat in my lap and kissed me. I made up my mind to eat her. On the pretense of taking her to a party. You said yes she could go. I took her to an empty house in Westchester I had already picked out. When we got there, I told her to remain outside. She picked wildflowers. I went upstairs and stripped all my clothes off. I knew if I did not I would get her blood on them. When all was ready I went to the window and called her. Then I hid in a closet until she was in the room. When she saw me all naked she began to cry and tried to run down the stairs. I grabbed her and she said she would tell her mamma. First I stripped her naked. How she did kick - bite and scratch. I choked her to death, then cut her in small pieces so I could take my meat to my rooms. Cook and eat it. How sweet and tender her little ass was roasted in the oven. It took me 9 days to eat her entire body. I did not fark her tho I could of had I wished. She died a virgin.
