Wow. A nation full of people who don't come apart at the seams over depictions of the human body? I wonder what it's like to live there instead of here where we bow to the wishes of stunted malcontents all the time.

This bas relief depicts Romulus and Remus, along with their lesser-known twin brothers Albert and Emilio who decided to pursue the burgeoning wolf husbandry business (which never really took off due to most practitioners being eaten by their livestock) instead of establishing a city-state and therefore didn't make it to the stories.

That last one ought to be titled "Little known fact: Romulus and Remus used to be triplets."

That's not a statue, that's just a Norwegian guy kicking some kids out of the way so he can get a seat on the bus!

"some nudity--mostly penises"

How horrific and utterly unnatural.

Been to Vigeland park. It was actually pretty cool. It was devised as a depiction of the human life cycle, so there was a lot of sculptures of young fighting old and the like. If you're ever in Oslo, it's worth it to check it out.

I expect it's considered good luck to rub it as you pass by. Pretty common for statues, though usually not their penises...

Fondling statues is a European thing. For example, it is considered lucky to feel up Juliet's right boob in Verona:

Some daring souls manage to do it though:

The same artist did all of these, didn't he? The guy seems to have a thing for over weight and pudgy chicks. I haven't figured out the fighting babies thing.

Walking around Vigelandsparken, you will see no end of tourists posing for pictures with penises. Pointing to them, grabbing them, licking them, simulating fellatio with them...

Apparently there are no penises elsewhere in the world, and all the women in utlandet just need a good dicking.

Probably for the same reason his left fist is so shiny.

Actually, it looks like it may have been cleaned or replaced. Copper can get pretty corroded over time, and they probably didn't want to have a sculpture of a child with a nasty looking green penis.

I'd forgotten how weird that park is, on a par with Park Guell in Barcelona but a different sort of weird.
I also thought "Paging Dr Freud" to the statue of what looked like a man being attacked by babies, I said so to my Norwegian friends but they didn't seem to get the joke so I put it down to different senses of humour and the fact that I was smoking a lot of hash in those days.

/Likes Norway, but what with Vigeland as well as Munch I reckon they have depths best left unexplored.

I went to Denmark and Norway this past summer for 4 weeks. The biggest thing I noticed there was it seemed much more socially "free". You could walk around town with a beer in your hand, no one gave a second glance. Stuff like that. It seemed really "libertarian". If you weren't bothering anyone else you were pretty much free to do what you wanted. Not like here, that's for sure.

There was very little police presence that I saw. I know much of Europe's police forces work more under cover, so maybe that's a factor. When I did see police, they were 10 deep in a van with full body armor, hauling ass through traffic. Whatever they were doing, they were dead serious.

Overall, a great experience. People are very friendly, speak better English than most Americans, and are laid back about just about everything.

My "welcome home" moment was customs in D.C. A 400 pound sistah screaming at us like we were kids as we entered the giant customs room. Just a rude biatch. I realized I hadn't encountered a single asshole the whole time over there. It was an odd feeling.
