Actually, dumbassmitter, increased severity of snow storms is consistent with global warming. Global warming doesn't mean winter goes away, it means the planet is warmer on average. Interestingly warmer winters means heavier snow fall in some areas - areas where normally it gets cold enough that precipitation is reduced due to the fact that colder air carries less moisture.

severe winter storms are not evidence for global warming, but neither are they contradictory. the fact that this has to be explained over and over tells us that you're not interested in science, just for some strange reason you've attached to "anti-global-warming" idiocy in the same way people attach to religion.

Kazan: Actually, dumbassmitter,

FTFA:

Headline:

Climate experts: Expect more weather disasters

First paragraph:

Freakish weather disasters - from the sudden October snowstorm in the Northeast U.S. to the record floods in Thailand - are striking more often. And global warming is likely to spawn more similar weather extremes at a huge cost, says a draft summary of an international climate report obtained by The Associated Press.

Fourth paragraph:

The most recent bizarre weather extreme, the pre-Halloween snowstorm in the U.S., is typical of the damage climate scientists warn will occur - but it's not typical of the events they tie to global warming.

the author of article is just as dumb as subby. because more severe winter storms is consistent with global warming.

Subby was quoting CBS. Increasing winter storms and higher snowfall in present snowfall areas, and there is nothing in climate theory that prevents early snowfall.

Increasing warming means the extremes become the norm. More snowfall, more floods, far worse and more common heat waves, stronger but not necessarily more frequent hurricanes.

And I know quite a bit about this too. Want to disprove global warming? Start by disproving Doppler/pressure broadening, which is why more CO2 and more methane means the planet warms up.

Don't know what pressure broadening is without a Google? Then shut the fark up about climate change and leave it to the people who do.

2011-11-04 12:11:01 AM
All of you are wrong. The author of the article was saying that the intensity of "Nor'easters"* were not likely part of climate change.

Subby was probably referencing that part.

/A Nor'easter is a storm that is...you know what? Go look it up. Basically it's a huge winter storm
//unless it happens during hurricane season

Climate change is such a f*cking sham. Scientists will look back and laugh their asses off one day just as we do today to phrenologists and other idiots who were "certain" of so many things.

Submitter ought to submit his ass to retard school.

Or go back to the 5th grade.

Most of North America is too farking cold for really bad winters, and the parts that aren't too cold are generally too dry. Disturb that pattern and you are inviting wetter, warmer winters. That means more precipitation.

Precipitation is generally "snow" in the winter time. Figured I had better point that out for tardmitter and his anti-science friends.

Yup. The deniers like that comparison, but they forget guys like Galileo had evidence to back up their claims. Merely being against the current scientific paradigm isn't sufficient.

They have plenty of evidence. Like, it was really cold yesterday. And all of the climate change stuff is based on giant piles of numbers and mathematical analysis that my poor, dumb cracker mind cannot understand. So that evidence doesn't exist- it can't possibly count. And the absence of evidence means we shouldn't accept the hypothesis unless it's my own sacred cow that lacks evidence.

Remember when global warming would also cause more intense hurricanes at higher frequencies...

Theain problem with the climate change prediction crowd is there are so many competing models and theories that often one can point to any climate event as lining up with at least one theory or model. The modeling is still in its infancy. Yea global warming is real. No long term climate predictions are not correct.

WTF, a freak winter storm in October. I remember as a kid in NJ/NY trick or treating in snow some years and other years it was on the warmish side. One problem is the media hype that comes with every "freak" weather happening which means if it is not sunny and 72 the weather is acting strange.

MyRandomName: Remember when global warming would also cause more intense hurricanes at higher frequencies...

That doesn't mean every year there are more and more hurricanes. Learn what a trend is in a system with high variance and get back to us.

Theain problem with the climate change prediction crowd is there are so many competing models and theories that often one can point to any climate event as lining up with at least one theory or model.

The problem with the climate change prediction crowd is that they have to interface with a media and public that doesn't understand what a "climate event" is. They think "increased hurricane activity" means "more and more hurricanes every year", for example.

It's so odd. People don't usually walk around acting like "armchair chemists", dissing theories in chemistry and whining about how everybody's an idiot because they don't buy into whatever ignorant hypothesis just popped into their own heads 20 seconds ago. They don't shiat all over peer-reviewed chemistry research because it's based on models. But when the subject is climatology suddenly all this stupid behavior is okay.

The old adage, "it's too cold to snow", has some truth to it, and there is research supporting the idea that the average climate in the U.S. is colder than optimal to support the heaviest snowstorms. For example, Changnon et al. (2006) found that for the contiguous U.S. between 1900 - 2001, 61% - 80% of all heavy snowstorms of 6+ inches occurred during winters with above normal temperatures. The authors also found that 61% - 85% of all heavy snowstorms of 6+ inches occurred during winters that were wetter than average. The authors conclude, "a future with wetter and warmer winters, which is one outcome expected (National Assessment Synthesis Team 2001), will bring more heavy snowstorms of 6+ inches than in 1901 - 2000." The authors found that over the U.S. as a whole, there had been a slight but significant increase in heavy snowstorms of 6+ inches than in 1901 - 2000. If the climate continues to warm, we should expect an increase in heavy snow events for a few decades, until the climate grows so warm that we pass the point where winter temperatures are at the optimum for heavy snow events.

Talk about debunked....there are not more frequent hurricanes, nor or they more powerful. So far in 2011, only 9 tropical cyclones made landfall at hurricane strength or greater, the lowest since 1979. Over the last 24 months there have been 145 named tropical cyclones with tropical storm strength or greater, average is 168.

GAT_00: DesertDemonWY: Talk about debunked....there are not more frequent hurricanes, nor or they more powerful. So far in 2011, only 9 tropical cyclones made landfall at hurricane strength or greater, the lowest since 1979. Over the last 24 months there have been 145 named tropical cyclones with tropical storm strength or greater, average is 168.

Landfall rates and occurrence rates are not the same, or even close.

If you look at the accumulated cyclone energy (ACE), you will find that it has been trending down and this year is way below average.
