I guess the death pod got him.

He looked just fine on Saturday. Damn.

Very sad.

One of my favourite memories is this: Back in college, we were lining up on having a bender of a weekend. Late on Friday afternoon, a buddy shows up with a Taiwanese exchange student that had been in the country less than 48 hours. We got him to drop acid with us and we took him to a GWAR show.

The only thing he could say all night with his limited english was 'Too much CRAZY!' I think we broke his brain.

I've always thought that Corey was one of the best guitarists GWAR ever had.

This sux.

2011-11-03 11:39:15 PM
Did they leave him on the road behind?

2011-11-03 11:41:22 PM
When they say he was found dead as they were preparing to cross the border, I'm guessing they found him dead in his bunk when they went to wake him up. Kinda creepy. RIP dude.

/show in Edmonton tomorrow is still on

Geez, this just ruined my week.

RIP Cory, you will be missed.

Goodnight, strummy man.

Hey GWAR, maybe Cory was sick of you?

2011-11-04 02:41:21 AM
Aw.

I saw them back in high school with Voodoo Glow Skulls and (non-Danzig) The Misfits for under $20. Probably the best entertainment- per-dollar-value show I've ever been to.

I saw this show too, somewhere in LA... the other time I saw GWAR was when Penis Flytrap opened for them. 2+ hour show, I wish I still had the (formerly) white t-shirt I wore to that one...

I saw that show. I think I was stained orange for about a week.

That's what my buddy told me this afternoon too. I'm supposed to be going to the Vancouver show on Monday, would have been GWAR show number 9.
Oh, and what took so long getting this on Fark?

Just the link I put in. "Maximus was really sick of you"

GWAR is one of the most offensively awesome shows you can ever see. Even if you don't like metal, the sheer comedic shock value is totally worth it.

The week after the VA Tech shooting, they already had a puppet of the shooter, yelling "honkey" racial slurs at the audience in Engrish, waving a gun. He was promptly decapitated.

Great loss. Corey Smoot was involved in a lot of other projects in underground metal, in addition to being a great guitarist.

One of the things on my bucket list is to see GWAR live. Like you said, even if you don't like metal, the shows are just so over-the-top that you can't help but enjoy yourself.

That said, 34 is way too young to go. RIP, Cory.

Happy Death Day!

2011-11-04 09:31:39 AM
I've seen GWAR a whole bunch of times, including the very last show at the original 9:30 club location (GWAR and the Meatmen) and a show where they opened for themselves as another band, the X-Cops, played a whole set and then came out as GWAR and played another whole set.

They had the best stage show of any band I've ever seen, hands down. Not only that, but I thought that as the years progressed their music grew from amusing and adequate all the way too actually quite good. I hope they continue after this.

RIP, metal man.

2011-11-04 09:32:40 AM
Saw them about 15 years ago in NYC. Electric Hellfire Club opened for them IIRC. We made sure to wear white tee-shirts to the show. Afterwards, we walked the streets of Manhattan looking like axe murderers with all the stains on them. Not one person gave us a second look.

Another buddy wasn't too into the show, so he stayed at the bar area and watched two girls suck face the entire time

They should finish the tour off Weekend at Bernie's style.

I was coincidentally fortunate enough to be in Hampton Roads when they were playing in Norfolk last month... my coworker got us tickets and we got to see them on their second show of this tour. Blood-hydraulic problems aside, they were musically stunning and the show was terrific. I have no idea how they can play so articulately, fast, and precisely with those insane costumes on, but they do it. I was particularly surprised how many hot women were there, not "hot for metal chicks" but actually "fine-ass b*tches" sorta thing.

They were all fed to World Maggot II after being manhandled by the sex slaves, as is just.

I was completely covered in red and green dye... the cleaning lady at the hotel must have been scratching her cabeza when she got to my shower! Totally worth it!

RIP Flattus

I'll go with myocardial infarction, usually when a dude is found dead in his bed that's what caused it.

Women seem to be immune.

So is GWAR a less popular KISS type band?

2011-11-04 09:44:30 AM
Yeah, this sucks.

Smoot was incredibly helpful to many local musicians in the Richmond area. He was always posting advice and answering questions on local forums and would often be found supporting the music scene here by attending the shows of bands no one will ever hear of.

He gave me a lot of great advice back in my band days and I was very appreciative.

Last year I had the opportunity to be in the Gwar video for 'Zombies, March!'. Many MANY boring hours of standing around but the guys in Gwar were jovial and went out of their way to make everyone feel welcome. You figure...these guys are standing there under these hot ass lights in those goddamn costumes for farking hours and they're cracking jokes while we have some make-up smeared on us. No whining for you.

You'll be missed, dude.

Broktun: So is GWAR a less popular KISS type band?

In the sense that they both had crazy getups and played rock music, yes... But GWAR's stage show blows KISS utterly out of the water, and they're waaaaaaay less family friendly than KISS. Also, KISS plays rock, GWAR plays metal and IMHO GWAR has much better music (your dad or grandpa might disagree, but KISS was only edgy for their older generations).

So GWAR is to KISS as a Ferrari is to a Yugo. Similar general idea, but one is way, way better.

I would say you're right, but you can get a Yugo for cheap. NOTHING is cheap when it comes to Kiss =P

Saw Gwar on Halloween in '05 or '06 (brain kind of fuzzy, was right after college). One of the best live shows I've ever seen. Flattus was a great guitarist. now I just wish I could have met Corey. RIP

When you're found dead on a tour bus, it's either that or a drug overdose.

Speaking of Kiss this turd of a song (new window) came on the radio. It was so bad I had to Soundhound the song to see who could be playing such poo.

I took my son to see GWAR at the National on his 13th birthday. He especially loves the visuals. He describes them as the "Zombie Apocolypse From Outer Space".

CSB moment- I park beside the National and saw the guys from Cannibus Corpse having a smoke break on the sidewalk. I greeted them and asked a favor. Later that night, after the show, they all autographed his arms with Sharpies. I swear he didn't bathe for a week...

\RIP Cory, you made my kid happy. Thanks man.

I went to a couple of shows back in the early 90's. I wa trying to figure out how a member of the band could only be 34 until I RTFA.

I never really got into their albums, but if you have never been to a GWAR show, you are missing out on one of life's greatest experiences.

A few years ago I was flipping through the news channels and they were interviewing Urangus on fox news. That's when I figured out Foxnews isn't serious, it's just Murdoch setting trolling to maximum

Never heard of them.

Sorry for the loss anyway.
