GimpyNip: I don't know what is more amusing:
That people drafted Peyton in fantasy or
That some people still have him on their roster

And its not even a keeper league.

Keep your head up, Peyton.

2011-11-03 04:46:23 PM
Still think he's done...

He should be MVP this year.

Peyton > Tim Tebow

Why would he ever risk playing again? What's the point?

If Ponder doesn't work out, I just know that 1 to 2 years from now, Peyton Manning is going to be the starting QB for the Vikings. And that makes me sad.

2011-11-03 05:12:39 PM
I'm hearing sportstalk pundits ask aloud "If the Colts get the no. 1 pick should they draft Luck?" Um, yes times a million? As far as I can tell, drafting Rodgers to succeed Favre worked out pretty well for Green Bay.

Yet Phil Simms said there's no way Manning will let that happen. Riiiiiiiggght. Moran.

2011-11-03 05:13:13 PM
If the Colts do wind up with the number one pick in the draft and take Luck, could we see a repeat of the Favre/Rodgers situation in Green Bay?

Fear not, Peyton says he'll be ready to start filming commercials in 6 months.

No way. They'll end up with the either a discarded Romo or a 35 year old Mike Vick returning from season ending ACL surgery

Sadly, all of those options are plausible.

Good call. My dad had McNabb pegged as a future Viking when he was still in Philly.

Of course it's going slow. If you had sideline tickets to a guaranteed trainwreck that's only halfway over, would you suddenly hop in the conductor's seat?

Ego. competitiveness....It's the same reason that [QB whose name shall not be spoken] couldn't quite 5 years ago. Right now he's one of the greatest ever....he wants to be the greatest ever.

So... to recap: The Indy's have never really fielded a great team, they just fielded a great QB.

That's because they shouldn't draft Luck, albeit for different reasons.

They could probably trade it for enough picks/players to field half a new team and get Kellen Moore/Nick Foles to learn behind Manning.

Young is plenty smart. Not a lot of guys can complete law school while playing at a HoF level in the NFL.

The Colts have been exposed this year as a very bad team. Suppose they could trade the number one overall pick next year (Andrew Luck) for another team's entire draft. Seven picks. Plus the six or so they would have themselves.

They could rebuild both sides of the ball, and see if Payton can still play in 2012. If he can't, they sign a QB or pick one at the 2013 draft and move ahead with a team of young players upgraded at a bunch of positions.

I'm not saying they should or shouldn't do this, but it would arguably be a good move if a team offered them that much for Luck.

I agree it would be the right move, but this is the team that waited until after Manning had his 3rd neck surgery in 18 months to start thinking about who their backup would be. Also, factor Manning's salary and the #1overall pick salary and its spending WAY too much of a % of the cap money on a position where only 1 guy can play at a time. They have far too many needs to pick Luck.

Am I the only one who looked at the photo, and was thinking:

"PLAYOFFS?!?....PLAYOFFS!?! I'M JUST HOPING WE WIN A GAME!"

The circle is complete.

Minor point, but the new CBA has kind of drastically reduced what the #1 overall pick salary now is.

Also, with all this Suck for Luck talk, how hilarious would it be if he decides to use up his final year of eligibility and stay at Stanford until the 2013 draft?

I'm well aware about the rookie pay scale, but its still going to be the highest pay for someone drafted in that year and the guy has to ride the bench for a few years behind Manning. IMO, they'd be better off trading that pick for multiple picks/players. Cam Newton is making $5.5m/season on average. Manning will count as $17m against the cap in 2012 (Link ). I know the cap will change for 2012, but for 2011 its $120m. Those 2 combined, assuming Luck gets the same deal as Newton (it'll probably be more) would count for almost 19% of the Colts cap limit.

2011-11-03 08:41:05 PM
Here's what I don't get: Peyton was having neck issues and apparently assured the Colts that he would return to health such that they gave him a ridiculous contract. Basically, he lied to them. At this point why should they believe that he will ever return, and even if he does that he will last long? Why wouldn't they draft luck and trade Manning for whatever they could get for him? Some team would take him even with the caution of his injury.

2011-11-03 09:35:21 PM
If what Peyton says is accurate his contract is not that outrageous, actually. It's really a one-year deal with an option for four more. The Colts will have to decide by March 2012 whether to exercise that option via a roster bonus payment, otherwise their financial obligation to Peyton is done. It sounds like it's structured to be cap friendly in the event the option isn't exercised.

GimpyNip: Nationally the story was 'when will Favre finally retire' not 'when will Rodgers finally start'.

Except in the IAmRight household!

/you owe Rodgers 8,000 passing yards and at least 50 TDs, Favre, you cocksucker!

quokka70: Don't they teach adverbs at Tennessee?

The word "adverb" has two syllables. Therefore, they can't teach that at Tennessee below their postgrad programs.

2011-11-03 10:33:26 PM
If the Colts go 0-16 and the Lions make the playoffs in the same season, is that a sign of the apocalypse?

2011-11-03 10:58:16 PM
GimpyNip: On the otherhand, imagine if Smith was doing what Newton or Dalton are? That would have changed the dialogue. He wasn't, though, so everyone lumped Rodgers with Smith and he just sat around until Favre retired.

It's an interesting alternate reality...

/hell, imagine what might've happened if Harbaugh (offensive coach) had been with the team since the beginning instead of two defensive-minded guys?
//still, lulz @ Mike McCarthy being part of the 49ers team that chose Smith, then going to Green Bay where he wound up getting to actually use Rodgers
///Green Bay was 4-12 the first year Rodgers was backup to Favre! DAMMIT THEY COULD'VE GOTTEN RID OF HIM THEN WITH NO PRESSURE ON RODGERS

2011-11-03 11:29:07 PM
The way I remember it, nobody was sure that Rodgers could come close to Favre when he first took over. The general sense was that it was a step down.

Tim Tebow > Peyton's turtleneck sweater

He had to be better at something.

2011-11-03 11:42:36 PM
I remember watching Rodgers in his first preseason and it wasn't pretty. If I recall correctly, he led 19 drives, only one of which resulted in a touchdown. So there wasn't much hype for Rodgers in the beginning, because he didn't deserve any. Here's a story from that era for some context.

2011-11-03 11:57:42 PM
If I was Peyton, I would just start looking for a job as a coach. He can do that gig with a stiff neck ... just sayin'

2011-11-04 12:31:26 AM
GimpyNip: I mean...there are people on this site that write things like, "Cam Newton, man, he sucks. Andy Dalton though, very impressed." I am certain that anyone who writes that hasn't watched either play a full game.

Yes, I'm sure the thread about the PFT article pointing out that Dalton was having a great season in his own right was very hurtful to you, lol.

2011-11-04 01:18:42 AM
I wonder if I'm the only one who thinks a large part of why Rodgers is good is because it took him three or so years to enter the league? On a good team no less?
