I've really come to enjoy Branston Pickle.

/Makes a grilled cheese/Branston Pickle sandwich using Muenster cheese and bread that's been baked with garlic and extra virgin olive oil until crispy.

I've never eaten poorly in England. In fact, you kind of have to go out of your way to find food worth mocking.

It's possible, but it's a lot of work.

I actually happen to like haggis. Deep fried battered Mars bars not so much. The Welsh like to use leeks and seaweed in their food. It's not all that bad though. Fast food will always be a little iffier.

I remember learning to like steak and kidney pie and even roll mops. Can't say I ever liked jellied eel. (The meat is nice, but the jelly and the skin and the bones are pretty disgusting.)

All in all, English food isn't that bad. It takes some getting used to. There was a time that lasted about 150 years in Europe where the majority of vegetables were boiled into colorless mush as the standard. It's nice to see that changing.

I never understood "meat and two veg". I don't know what I thought it was, but turns out it was exactly what it said on the tin.

Also, there seems to be a standard "Sunday Dinner" which the pubs advertise, which I thought was odd.

Oh, the other thing I noticed on my last visit was that everyone I talked with (mostly Midland folks) seemed to speak about Italian food as some exotic delicacy. I wouldn't have noticed it so much, but in one of Ricky Gervais's podcasts Karl Pilkington admits he "has trouble" with pasta. That struck me as odd (setting aside the fact that Karl is an idiot).

One of the best sammiches I ever had was in a little pub in Edinburgh: cheddar and mango chutney on fresh-baked bread. I've also had loch salmon and Aberdeen steak. And I can't wax rhapsodic enough about the lamb. Mmmmm, lamb. FWIW (not much, I know) my favourite Thai restaurant is a little place on The Strand in London. Delicious!

You get the same sort of tried and true in Maine with a "Boiled Dinner" or "Sunday Beans." The British Isles like consistency. The one thing that the English were able to do was break up their cuisine with imports from their Empire--which is why you can get decent curry and kabobs. And a crapload of tamarind based sauces...

I have never, ever had a good pizza in England. They just can't do it, and I say this as someone born of English parents. They get all carried away and start putting things like turkey and sweet corn on them.

Marmite, however, is just delicious.

Look, when you have to drink what we have, you can't fault us for treating the food as marginal.

That said, I'll take a good Full Breakfast over scrambled-eggs-and-bacon any day, even without the drink.

A serving of Haggis contains the standard healthy allowance for sodium and saturated fats.

My wife and I took a trip to Scotland and stayed with friends there. She and her buddy took a trip to the Anstruther Fish Bar to pick up fish and chips.

1. At the Anstruther Fish Bar, they call fish and chips "fish suppers" and will look at you confused and a bit scared if you ask for fish and chips.
2. My wife wanted to try the haggis there. Her buddy shook his head no.
3. My wife and I lost so much weight on that trip because Scottish food was pretty much godawful.

Well, if you don't like seafood so fresh you can watch it from the boat to the kitchen, or steak so tender it melts in your mouth, and veggies fresh from out back of the kitchen, then definitely don't go to Scotland! In fact, stay away, leaves more for the rest of us.

By the way, best cheeseburger EVER at Metro Bar, Apex International Hotel, Edinburgh.

Of all the fake meats out there, fake crumbled sausage is by far the most palatable--it's pretty good, in fact better than a lot of the lower-quality crumbled sausages out there. If you're okay with eggs, an ovovegetarian Scotch Egg is certainly not out of the question. Hell, I have have a mind to try making some tonight.

Same here. I've always had good food in England. Some of the best salmon I've had was in Scotland. Their pub food is a zillion times better than most U.S. bar food.

It's haggis, and if you felt like driving the four hours north, you could have some at the festival this weekend.

Except you can trust the "haggis" they serve from the "haggis truck" ain't real haggis. Pretty sure the same thing at any county fair would be called a chili dog.

/I've never had real haggis

re scheme to levy higher taxes on "unhealthy" foods:

Can of worms #1: who decides what to tax, etc.

Can of worms #2: what other lifestyle choices will be considered for inclusion in future tax schemes?

Ughh hurts to think of the rubbish that would flow out of this business.

GungFu: English food?

In describing the cuisine from our vacation to London, see above. Excellent meals in all these areas could be obtained within walking distance of our hotel off Hyde Park. Except for a few obligatory dinners when we ate pub food with some fellow travelers. Fish, chips, mushy peas. The horror, the horror!
