Lovecraft was a sorry misanthrope who coincidentally had the ability to string some words together.

I feel sorry for him as a person and for all of mankind that has to tolerate his "art."

This applies to lots of writers. If you change "string some words together" to "do something entertaining", you'll cover a lot more ground and sweep up a whole lot of athletes and other artists. What did Lovecraft ever do to you?

I liked his stories that didn't have a direct old ones or cthulu connection.

Good thing he didn't say the same thing about Robert Howard. Them would be 'fightin' words.

BTW, I liked Robert Howards take on the Cthulu Mythos as well.

Lovecraft is going to get full pop culture embrasure like zombies and vampires and become scorned.

If you were reading Peanuts as a gag strip, you really should go back and read it again. It's great stuff, with granted some maudlin bits but some phenomenal stuff as well.

Well, at least my Lovecraft obsession during high school will earn me some hipster cred.

My first encounter with H.P. Lovecraft was stumbling upon his grave
in Swan Point Cemetery - almost exactly 21 years ago.
I'd heard the name, but that was about all I knew about him.

I did however, have the decency to clean the plastic witches
and pumpkin candles off of his headstone.

Then I started reading his books.

This Cutethulu shiat needs to stop. The ONLY stuff like this that was good was the Family Circus (because they actually made it dark and ridiculous, not cute) and the NO MORE YEARS 08 election thing.

What about Hanna-Barbera Chtulhu?

Yoggi Sothoth: Hey-ey, Boo-Boo! I think I see some fresh pic-i-nic caskets in the Jellybone Cemetery this evening. Mmmaybe we should help ourselves to some ta-a-asty soul-type treats!
Boo-Boo Cthulhu: But Yoggi, you know the Priest isn't gonna like that--
Yoggi: Ah, but Boo-Boo! What he does not know will not hurt us! Come along, little chum!
Priest: YOGGI! Innominepatrisetfilisetspiritusancti--
Yoggi: Cheese it, Boo-Boo! The jig is up!
Boo-Boo: Why are we running, Yoggi? Christian exorcisms don't affect us.
Yoggi: That isn't a bible he's holding, Boo-Boo. It's the Necronomicon!
Priest: Azathoth patris, Nyarlathotep filis, Cxaxukluth--
[Storm clouds build, swirl. Lightning crashes. Sky cracks open]
Boo-Boo: Uh-oh, Yoggi...

SavageWombat: http://www.whatisdeepfried.com/weaponbrown/weaponbrown.html

I guess he's not obscure. I went to grade school and high school with Jason, we were friends in grade school. He wrote a weird-ass strip for the HS newspaper that did not have wide appeal...but probably evolved into a sensibility expected of underground comics later.

Glad he's successful.
