It's a Rolls-Royce, with rear-hinged doors for a more elegant exit, so you don't flash your pants to the paps.

WTF does that mean? Speak English, you English bastards.

Yup, the car has suicide doors in the back so you can just turn your body and stand.

Rented an Alfa-Romeo Giulietta with the same rear door handles as number 2.

Thought they were going to snap off.

king_nacho: so you don't flash you crotch to the paparazzi.

Seems like you would give the photog a clear vector to the snatch with the door opening that way.

It's funny, I was doing a little car browsing, and I liked the handle on the CTS Coupe.

Just read their blog about the SSC Aero and the Venom GT. Sounds like the Venom is an ass-kicker of biblical proportions.

My vote for best door handle: 1978 Ford Fiesta.

These are stupid looking. When I was looking for a car, I thought about the z and immediately started looking for aftermarket handles or trying to scheme a way to get them painted. But I went cheaper and got an altima coupe instead. I would have had to learn to drive a stick otherwise.

If you can't drive a manual, you shouldn't be looking at cars like the 350Z in the first place. The whole point of the car is entirely ruined by the inclusion of a slushbox.

I don't know, I like them. I think it gives your eyes a focal point as they're following the oh=so-pretty lines of that car.

Instead of pulling it with four fingers, you flick it with two...

Rub your hand under the ridge...

on the underside is a little nipple that you push to pop...

...ejecting from its slot. Then pull on the end...

Are we still talking about door handles?

To be fair learning to drive a manual transmission is a rare and difficult skill to learn. Only 6 people on the planet know it!

(seriously go learn dude, it won't take 30 minutes and then you will be able to drive ANYTHING... maybe not a tank)

Both! Seriously, though, I suppose my point was "the MTBF of the transponder key system may be lower than that of a physical key." In the seven years I've had a wireless lock system, I've experienced zero problems, as opposed to the many problems I had with a physical key. The industry has been using keyless entry for many years (decades?) now. Even transponders systems have been around for the better part of a decade. If their reliability was a major concern, I'm sure we'd all be aware of it by now.

I don't really understand what you're getting at. Physical keys break too. What difference does it make if you break the physical key or you break the transponder? In one case you get a new key made, in the other case you program a blank. Either way it's really just a matter of replacing the broken key, it's just a matter of how you do it.

I never had an opportunity to learn to drive stick shift. But a few years ago, somebody took me along to drive a company truck back from the garage to the office and just dropped me off. I got in, and realized what I was dealing with. I had a pretty good idea about how everything worked but had just not had experience. So after stalling out a few times, I got it figured out and did fine. No big deal.

Fair enough.

I am just an old school kind of guy when it comes to replacing simple mechanical systems with electronics. Just a hair of technophobia because I see electronics break down all the time.

Recently rebuilt an 82 UJM (Suzuki 650GS) wonderful how simple everything on that bike is.

What I was getting at, was simple conjecture that a simple mechanical lock would be fair more reliable than even the most reliable bit of electronics.

Perhaps it was baseless but none the less that was my point.

I don't think that's true. I think people vastly underestimate the reliability of simple, well-made electronics these days.

ronin7: Could you imagine driving a slushbox Z through a Californian canyon road?

Yes, but it makes me cry on the inside.

I just get pissed about it because I hate going looking for nice used sports cars in the U.S. only to find that three quarters of the goddamn things are automatics.

What the fark is the point of buying a driver's car with an automatic gearbox. If you can't drive don't buy a driver's car.

I think your trolldar is hitting a false positive. Might want to dial the sensitivity down a bit on that thing.

Go to a car dealership and count the number of people who look at otherwise sports cars but have no intention of driving a real transmission. Hell, just count the manuals you see!

People really are like that. People really do act like that even in 'car threads'.

Well some of the sports cars are paddle shifter and the like... which can go fully automatic... but I can't imagine together with old school manuals they make up more then twice that.

I know what you mean about the difficulty in finding a manual. I've started looking for a new sports sedan and I've got some fairly basic requirements:

6-cylinder engine
Manual transmission
Sedan
within 100 miles of my zip
2009+

Autotrader results: 2 standard CTSs. Only good thing to come out of that search is being able to convince the wife that the car I want doesn't really exist as a sedan in that price range.

As far as I know, the advent of computer-modulated shifting made the automatic gearbox faster than the manual in terms of shift-times. It basically the opposite of what the problem was when the automatics first came out. I don't know, is there any other reason, apart from a greater sense of being part of the car, that a stick would be better?

Cheaper automatics are still slower. The high speed DSG boxes are still trickling down market to the Mazdas and Nissans of the world. Other than that though, mostly it's just more fun.

Price, ease of repair, that smug sense of superiority, the thrill of constantly having to up- and down-shift in stop-and-go traffic during rush hour, replacing the little ball with something cool like a cobra head...
