MaudlinMutantMollusk: /people actually click on those things?

Well crafted bad ads generally don't require you to click on anything to trigger them.

The mind of the Ad Man:

People no longer listening? Talk louder.

People ignoring you talking louder? Wave you hands in front of their face, too.

People using hands to cover ears? Kick them in the shin and when they grab their leg, yell at them.

I swear these people are missing the part of the brain that tells them some folks want to be left alone.

Today I learned that tainted has more than one meaning and the tainted ads I've been seeing are not malware.

Oh and this is why I will never use another browser than Firefox because of AdBlock Plus. You can argue until you're blue in the face about features, speed, memory, etc. No other browser does it as well and as long as this is a valid vector for attacks they should be blocked.

Yes I know Chrome has AdBlock but it's nowhere near as good because Chrome will not provide the necessary hooks for it to be as good.

Contents Under Pressure: What moron actually clicks ads any more?

Why my clients do, and that means I get to charge them for getting the nasty infections off their computers....again. Oh, I do give them very good antivirus and all sorts of other tools too, but it doesn't matter. The best seatbelt in the world won't save you if you can't figure out that driving into a wall at 70mph is not a good idea.

Some people are just not capable of learning from past mistakes or keeping themselves from clicking on the pretty shiny things. My mother-in-law is one. When I told her the games she was playing were infecting her computer, she said, "well, I am going to play the games, because they are fun." I told her I would charge her for me cleaning her computer from then on.

Some people are just stupid. I think my MIL has an oppositional disorder, personally.

Weaver95: I lurve my adblock and noscript addons....

I've got mixed feelings on those...on the one hand, a lot of advertisement is overdone/malicious/annoying. On the other hand, its the advertising dollars that are providing the otherwise free content that is so prevalent on the internet. I LIKE having so much available with 0 out of pocket cost to me, which can only exist as long as advertising continues to fund the people providing the content/infrastructure necessary to deliver it.

There's a twofold problem I have with adblock software. The first is practical: If it ever becomes popular enough, the revenue to provide us with the free content will disappear. Okay, that's unlikely, as you can't go broke betting on the stupidity of the average person. The second is an ethical one: We're receiving this content, not for free, but with the implicit understanding that its being paid for by advertising. By completely blocking the advertising part, are we not effectively "stealing" the content?

No because as long as advertisers are going to infect/install crap on MY machine without my consent or knowledge they can fark right off. How's that for ethics? If they can't advertise cleanly they can forget about playing ball.

meh, I think it's similar to how I'm okay with people tunnelling/proxying to use Hulu or 4OD, but not okay with people tunnelling/proxying to view BBC iPlayer.

/though from what I've heard the beeb doesn't use ip geolocation, they use a provider white list.

Late to the thread, but I've been cleaning this shiat up nonstop for 2 years now. It's probably 75-80% of my business. Nice to see major websites are so lax in their security practices. FF, ABP and NoScript FTW.

Also, if you have FF, install Ghostery. It'll blow your mind...It's insane how many trackers the average website has.

The average joe still thinks his anti-virus/security product of choice will protect him from everything. Those days are GONE, and they're not coming back. The first thing I hear is "B-b-but I have (insert security product here)! It should have caught this!"
