She needs to distance that movie from 'Battle Royale,' because it sounds like a total ripoff.

Although really, she didn't write it so it's not hers to defend. Still...

On the other hand Jennifer Lawrence is way hotter than that chick from Twilight, so they have got that going for them.

I've read the Hunger Games books, they're not bad, and from what I've seen of the Twilight movies, The Hunger Games is significantly better.

the hunger game books were pretty good, especially for the teen-lit genre.

with some good writing on the movie side, it could be quite a bit better as a film series

Yup. Am also having trouble reconciling how Twilight and Hunger Games are similar, other than the love triangle. Twilight is an unreadable mess; Hunger Games, OTOH, had me hooked throughout. I loaned the first two books of HG to a bunch of colleagues early last year and all of them were hooked. Even the dudes at work sidled over to my cube asking when they could borrow the third instalment.

Emo Sparkly Vampires should not even be mentioned in the same SENTENCE as the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is INFINITELY better than Twilight, and most everything else aimed at younger readers.

A little rushed but I still really liked it. I liked that she didn't try and turn people who never wanted to be heroes into heroes. And I liked that it wasn't good government versus evil government but rather... a whole lot of people fighting for their own power and self-interests.

Jamdug!: She's very underrated in both hotness and acting.

Her hotness may be underrated but she has been nominated for an Oscar. I'd say that marks her acting talents as "duly noted".

Well, there at least two people of color in the group shot, plus Lenny Kravitz, so it could be at LEAST three more white.

Well, at least she tried. That's more than Martin and Jordan can say.

These books are infinitely better than that Twilight nonsense. The casting looks good for the movie, even if they're a little older than I expected. Maybe people age faster in the future.

One problem, though. With the exception of the careers, the characters should be a little under-nourished. All these people look a little too buffed-up and well fed. I know I know, it's only a movie, that's a publicity photo, makeup & lighting, blah blah blah.

Repeat after me - "It's only a movie"

We'll see how they get portrayed on film- the actors aren't in character for these pictures.

I thought the casting of the secondary characters was great. Lenny Kravitz, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, Woody, Elizabeth Banks, and Stanley Tucci are all great choices. The two boys worry me a little bit, they are almost too good looking, but again, lighting, makeup, blah blah blah.

Concur. I'm really pulling for this movie to look right and not be sparkly.

I was worried about that too, and then I realized that the actor who plays Peeta was a child actor I really enjoyed. He was in a movie called "Little Manhattan" as a kid, and he carried that thing.

He was also great in Bridge to Terabithia.

Yeah, Peeta doesn't worry me as much as Thor's little brother. Dude is big, I didn't picture Gale being big, but Jennifer Lawrence is a gorgeous blonde, and I didn't picture that either, so I'm hoping for the best.

Absolutely.

Or are you one of those complaining because a character who was described as having grey eyes, a blonde, blue eyed mother and a blonde, blue eyed sister wasn't cast with a PoC?

That's true. Gale's role isn't as important as Peeta's though. He doesn't really have to act the same range of emotions. Gale mostly plays angry at the system and jealous of Peeta- it's not really that huge a role. Gale's not even in the bulk of the story in the first two books.

Well, it must have been rather difficult for Suzanne Collins to write the third one. There were only two "Battle Royale" movies.

Yeah, I'm a bit of a book snob, but I'm in the middle of "Mockingjay" right now and I think this series is great. Totally looking forward to the movie, and I think the casting's fantastic, especially Elizabeth Banks as Effie. Although I pictured Haymitch as Willem Dafoe, Woody is also a really good choice.

2011-11-03 05:23:08 PM
As I read the series I pictured Haymitch as a Hagrid type character. When I saw that Woody got the part.... it still fit perfectly. Banks and Sutherland are inspired choices that could be just as awesome.

Who is Tucci playing?

Okay now I'm super excited. I can't wait to see the casting for the 2nd and 3rd movies. Finnick, Johanna, and Boggs especially.

Meanwhile the 1:00 teaser trailer is nothing special, but I got mini-chills at the end when they play Rue's song.

The series starts off great, but suffers with each successive novel. The third was such trash it was a dredge to read through.

I wouldn't say it was that bad (in fact, I know it wasn't that bad), but the second two were not as tightly written as the first. I liked them both, and they did a good job of finishing up the story, but they seemed to lose focus and just didn't hold me the same way the first book did.

I'm in the middle of the second now (I know, here there be spoilers, but I'm in the thread anyway). It's a fantastic read, but by its very nature the first was always going to feel the tightest and fastest. That's just the nature of the games. The second so far has had an excellent plot about the fallout from the first, but that can't be nearly as tightly paced or hold as much suspense because they have such a larger amount of ground to cover and so many other moving parts.

1 is a snapshot of a socieity. 2, so far, is a portrait. It's different by nature.

Not to mention 12 year old girls getting shot, stabbed, and beaten to death is going to be hard to do and keep a PG-13.

Um, there is NOTHING at all similar about these two stories.

Hell, there really isn't that much similar between the Hunger Games trilogy and Battle Royale, really. The concept (kids fighting) is the same, but when it comes down to it, the overarching storyline of the Hunger Games is not at all the same thing.
