The University of Kentucky still uses LISTSERV... Got an email from them yesterday I think.

does that mean people can start calling "Mailing lists" LISTSERVs again? Cause there was one of those stupid cease and desists a couple of years back.

They're "not shutting down LISTSERV.".. LISTERV is mailing list software. Some company named LSoft makes it. They're shutting down the listerv.aol.com mailing list host.

This reminded me that I signed up for pg_hackers years ago, tagged it in gmail and totally forgot about it. I just checked it for the first time in years and I have 14,651 unread emails from it. Guess I got some reading to do.

/ haven't used pgsql in over four years

In other news, AOL is still around, no doubt feasting upon the tributes still being paid by people who once loaded the "free" trial from a disk, be it floppy or compact, and foolishly entered their credit card numbers. Sometimes even more than once.

No seriously, I know several people who had TWO AOL fees taken out of their credit card every month for several years after they used up their trial.

Next thing you know, they'll shut down mIRC, USENET, Prodigy... then, next thing you know, I won't be able to play Trade Wars 2002 or LORD anymore.

How could they "shut" down mIRC. It's a program. And IRC is still around. Guess what, anybody could operate an IRC server.

This is not the USENET you are looking for.

Anyone else remember getting online many years ago, discovering lists and subscribing to so many that your inbox became hell to mange and you ended up deleting most of the lists without reading? Also forgetting to set a list for digest and getting 300 emails about KD Laing's sex life? Me neither.

Why would parents stop crying?

Also, AOL is fundamentally evil and fraudulent, and to hell with them.

If the issue is that you need groups that work anywhere in the world, even on crappy, unstable connections, on an ad-hoc network that's impossible to censor, this is what Usenet is for, and it's why Usenet still has thousands upon thousands of active groups.

If you just need a mailing list, get better software. LISTSERV is *ancient*, and unlike Usenet, it has been utterly replaced by superior tech. There's really no excuse for not having upgraded to something better some time in the last 10 years. Hell, with modern scripting languages, even a fairly inexperienced programmer could roll their own and get something better.

I think this is the point in the thread where someone (me) says, 'What??? We're losing our ListServ? But...but...but...' Everybody panic!!!

I rely heavily on my listservs and cannot think of a decent replacement. Of course, I know nothing about Usenet either, so there's that.

I should check my belts for onions.
