I wouldn't be surprised if well over half of Americans thought 'the Lord helps those who help themselves' was in the Bible. Very common mistake.

2011-11-03 08:57:53 AM
But it's okay when people misquote the Bible to justify sexism, racism, and homophobia, right? And Calvinism is okay, right? So is the Queen of England, right? And the Rapture is totally almost here, right? And the earth is 6,000 years old, right?

But I can still wear a garment of divers sorts, as of woollen and linen together, right?

God helps those who help themselves isn't really a good quote to support the government providing assistance. It's more of a bootstrappy Poor Richard's saying.

2011-11-03 09:00:19 AM
It's in 2 Corinthians chapter 3, right after "Don't trusty whitey".

I_C_Weener: It's more of a bootstrappy Poor Richard's saying.

And what luck! That's exactly where it was popularized.

I learned it was not a bible quote when I said it around a priest who told me it was not.

[Obvious]: Subby doesn't mention that the correction was posted in the official WH transcript of the event. As opposed to the "never, ever admitted to, ever" we've come to expect from biblical misquotes.

Oh, and [Double Obvious]: Right-wing blogs will insist this misquote proves that all democrats are actually muslims who don't care about the jesus

To put it in a perspective that Farkers would understand: Imagine if the WH was throwing out "Firefly" references despite having never seen the series NOR the movie!

If someone ever tries to block your jobs initiative you try to block them right back!

And my personal favorite:

I'll be in my bunk--working on a jobs initiative."

Has the Bible ever been quoted correctly? Maybe somewhere once among the Amish. But they kept getting tormented until Harrison Ford had to beat the shiat out of someone.

Well the Jobs initiative is pretty depressing, actually.

He didn't misquote the Bible. He attributed something to the Lord that isn't in the Bible.

If I say Hillary Clinton said of the 99%, "let them eat cake," I'm not misquoting her. I'm misquoting Marie Antoinette, not to mention getting the entire context wrong.. As to Mrs. Clinton, I'm just wrong.

if he wanted a good Bible verse then he should refer them to the words in red written in Matthew 25

34Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Lost Thought 00: If you are quoting it in English, you are misquoting it.

I once tried to explain to my Fundimantalist now-ex laws about the many difficulties with the notion that the bible is unchanged and unaltered. The fact that the entire old testament was originally written sans vowels for one. The fact that the new testament was written without punctuation for another. And that whole chapter and verse thing? Retcon...

The phrase is often quoted to emphasize the importance of taking initiative.
The beliefs of Americans regarding this phrase and the Bible has been studied by Christian demographer and pollster George Barna of The Barna Group. To the statement "The Bible teaches that God helps those who help themselves"; 53% of Americans agree strongly, 22% agree somewhat, 7% disagree somewhat, 14% disagree strongly, and 5% stated they don't know. Of "born-again" Christians 68% agreed, and 81% of non "born-again" Christians agreed with the statement.[11] In a February 2000 poll, 53% strongly agreed and 22% agreed somewhat that the Bible teaches the phrase. Of the 14 questions asked, this was the least biblical response, according to Barna.[12] A poll in the late 1990s showed the majority (81%) believe the concept is taught by the Bible,[13] another stating 82%.[14]
It even topped a poll of the most widely known "Bible verse", despite the fact it is not stated there[15][16] 75% of American teenagers believe it is the central message of the Bible.[17]

Has the Bible ever been quoted correctly?

Old Testament: We're talking about a translation of a translation of a
collection of ancient documents written in a now dead language, of
which no originals survive, that laid out a code for people who lives
at the end of the Stone Age.

New Testament: We're talking about a translation of a translation of a
collection of stories, that relate to life in the Iron Age, that were
first put into writing several generations after the reported events
occurred.

I mean - how important are accurate quotations in that context?

If I'm already helping myself, what the hell do I need God for?

2011-11-03 09:43:30 AM
So, on an unrelated note, I followed one of the wiki links farther up the thread from the phrase to the article about grace, and the article about grace makes the statement that it's believed to be a gift from god delivered to an undeserving humanity.

How does that get reconciled anyway? God is all-powerful. God makes man. Man is flawed. God loves him anyway even though he doesn't deserve it.

Doesn't that kind of gloss over the fact that "god is a bit of a fark up" is implied in that line of thinking?

I guess "I am god! The almighty screw up!"* doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

* This common phrase does not appear in the Bible.

hillbillypharmacist: I wouldn't be surprised if well over half of Americans thought 'the Lord helps those who help themselves' was in the Bible. Very common mistake.

"Let he who has not sinned, cast the first stone", is cool/catch and is in the Bible but researchers have discovered that it was not in the original testaments and was added several hundred years later.

My point is that even stuff in the Bible was not really in the Bible. Further, even stuff that was actually in the Bible was probably bullshiat so basically, anyone who quotes the Bible is an idiot. An idiot for thinking that it is relevant or just an idiot for trying to use it to appeal to the people who think it is relevant.
