And yet study after study shows that talking on a cell phone with a hands-free microphone is no safer than talking on a cell phone you're holding.

Just another gimmick by the high-power Bluetooth lobby.

With a photo of what I believe is a Nokia 6275i. I loved that little phone. It makes my current Bold 9700 look like a brick (insert BlackBerry joke here).

Talk about distracted driving, that woman is on the wrong side of the road!

How do you know if the call is urgent?

When I talk to myself, it is usually because everyone around me is too stupid to comprehend whatever I'm talking about.

Though I never actually expect a response, that'd be crazy!

Beat me to it. This is why we should be forced to go back to stick shifts.

I could and would talk on a cell phone while smoking a cigarette and drinking mountain dew when I drove a 5 on the floor. What would going back to a stick do for me (other than make me AWESOME. I miss my Eclipse.)

Hah, this. I've driven my stick with a burger in one hand and my cell phone in the other on several occasions. Also developed a talent in my high school years for rolling cigarettes while driving, which never failed to impress my friends.

I'd have told a few jokes about a month ago, but I didn't think any Blackberry users would get them.

I drive with hands on the steering wheel in the 10 and 2 o'clock positions at all times. No music, no friends allowed. I've disabled the recline feature on the seat, and filled the cupholder with cement. If the pedal is pressed beyond a certain point, the car shuts down and I recieve and electrical shock to punich myself.

Driving isn't an amusement park ride, people. Take this shiat seriously.

people talking handsfree (especially on earpieces) do look completely bonkers. there used to be a time when someone walking down the street talking to thin air would be picked up and shipped to the looney bin. phone or not, i think we should return to those days anyhow. still looks crazy.

Two caveats to that 1) Hands free dialing is much safer than physical dialing, and 2) A hands-free law does actually appear to produce a statistically significant reduction in traffic fatalities, although whether this is attributable to less phone usage, more public education surrounding the law, or some other factor is not yet clear.

The texting while driving people make me pine for the days when people only talked on their phones when driving.

Talking on the phone in light-to-no highway traffic is one thing (I don't DO it, but it doesn't make me rage). Texting while driving makes me stabby. I've actually reached out and banged on someone's driver's side window at 80 mph to make them pay attention.

I believe the safety masters changed the position to 9 and 3. And if you're going to punich yourself, do it with a book.

Some would argue that a ban on using a cell phone while driving doesn't make sense because you can't outlaw everything that's a distraction. Banning radios in cars, for example. The problem with that logic is just because you can't hit all the targets doesn't mean you shouldn't fire at the targets you can hit.

Cloudchaser Sakonige the Red Wolf: The problem with that logic is just because you can't hit all the targets doesn't mean you shouldn't fire at the targets you can hit.

But what's the logic behind making cell phones explicitly illegal, rather than just banning "distracted driving" regardless of the cause?

A prohibition on "distracted driving" would cover all the targets, wouldn't need to be updated every 3 years, and wouldn't lead to retarded loopholes like "it's okay to be distracted so long as you have an earbud".

You do make a good point, a "distracted driving" ban would be a better idea.
