Android and iOS rule the consumer market. Win7 is expanding rapidly in the enterprise market. RIM is done.

Win7 is going to kill Blackberry I think. Lots of employers will issue either a Win7 or a Blackberry phone. Win7 has more features the consumers want than Blackberry does and everyone around here picked a Win7 phone. Basically Win7 is a good mixture of the enterprise stuff our Lords of IT want, while having most of the stuff I as a consumer want.

/they're actually pretty nice

FTA:
" 'They've been losing business, there've been operating technology problems. There isn't a lot of customer loyalty anymore.' "

I guess this guy doesn't work for the US Government. I think they're the only ones keeping RIM afloat. And actually, I think RIM will just re-size and cater to enterprise IT managers. Its phones are a little too powerful in the wrong way for the average consumer.

Since when? Win7 is doing nothing in both the enterprise and consumer market. It's been a big failure so far.

Poor Canada.

First we steal their NHL teams and put them in markets where no one cares, and now we've killed their lone smartphone maker with our Google and Apple products.

If I were Tim Hortons, I'd be watching my ass.

I'm an Apple guy through and through, but do you really think that LESS competition in the smartphone market is a GOOD thing?

Nobody else bothers to make phones that the DOD and other related agencies can use.

You can't keep convincing IT shops to pay for BES, when Microsoft is going to basically give you the same functionality for free with the Exchange you're already paying for. I know EAS isn't up to BES standards yet, but it's only a matter of time, and even if it continues to lag it's going to be close enough for most shops.

Having gone from a Storm to a Droid X myself, your life will be so much better.

Competition is good. Whether Blackberry still actually counts as competition is iffy.

I just bought a 9900 but I previously had a Samsung Captivate. Liked the android os but it's just not as smooth for the core functions and battery life sucked.

I now have the best of both worlds. Bberry phone and android tablet (plus a macbook air). All bases covered.

Every single person I talk to has some major gripe about their Blackberry. I am also one of them. I swear the only reason they are still in business is because of corporate IT depts who coo over their ability to monitor all usage or nuke a blackberry from remote. If corporate end-users had a choice, they would ditch all their blackberry devices in a heart beat.

I don't buy there's only a market for 3 smartphone OSes. We're talking about a market with billions of handsets, even if an OS only captures 10% of a 1 billion market, that's still 100 million units. And we'll be seeing a market of 2-3 billion.

RIM has a CEO(s) problem. They no longer have a vision. And what they certainly didn't have is the fear that Andy Grove once said (only the paranoid survive). They still have name recognition in most of the world, they have the infrastructure (most businesses and governments are still set up for BB), and they have the manufacturing capability. They just need a vision to lead them.

Pretty much this. RIM was in obvious danger when the iPhone came out. When Android expanded, it was only a matter of time before RIM collapsed. There's no selling point any more unless your company insists on using RIM's shiatty infrastructure. The consumer market is going to be Android and iOS, and the enterprise market is going to move toward allowing people with smartphones to simply link up with companies using apps on their personal phones.

Android with take most of the market share and make lots of money through volume pushing ad views. Apple will take its 20% and make lots of money through hardware. There will probably be room for Microsoft to gain some share if it ever learns to get out of its own way.

RIM is dead though. The company has nothing to offer at this point. It has no price advantage over Apple and the Android makers. Its handsets are Soviet-looking garbage. Its infrastructure has all the reliability of a late-'90s Volkswagen. The leadership is incompetent and unwilling to make the necessary bets on the future.

It's over. Let it go.

I don't know a single person who still uses a Blackberry for work. But when I ride the train here every other teenager in the Netherlands has a Blackberry to use for their messaging system. The other half have a Samsung Galaxy S. So RIM is selling their services to someone at least.
