How poetic.

The liquor store is a neighborhood fixture. The owner greets nearly every customer by name. Elton John plays through a raspy radio, the Clint Eastwood display stands next to a gurgling fish tank and the Senegal parrot named Henry nibbles affectionately on the owner's ear.

I would give this guy all of my business. And my liquor business is considerable.

Who the fark robs a liquor store? The armed Viet Nam Vet thing aside, who robs a liquor store?

Woulda been cooler if the owner had trained said parrot to attack the eyes of any would-be-assailants.

I miss package stores. One thing I really hate about North Carolina are the sterile ABC stores. They just don't have the charm of a privately owned shoot and stab. They don't have beer either. And the hours are shiat.

Not a hero. Sorry.

Nice, but shooting out a window wont disable a car.

And your pistol doesnt have a chance in hell of stopping a car anyway. If you shoot then it better be to kill.

TFA: One detective, the owner said, approached him and said that while keeping a registered handgun in his business was legal, shooting it outside in the parking lot was crossing a line.

"He said, 'Look, you can't do that. We're the police and we can't even do that,'" the owner said, although he was told that no charges would be pursued against him.

I wish I had the ability to shoot recklessly at fleeing people and not suffer any consequences. This guy should consider himself lucky.

That guy was definitely no soft sucker with a parrot on his shoulder. I'd go so far to say he's bad gettin' bolder - cold getting colder.

Not to be a Debbie Dower here, but did anyone else notice that quick draw chased after the attacker and fired three rounds at the get away vehicle. The kicker is, he couldn't even hit the get away vehicle. Those three bullets went somewhere, and put the whole neighbor hood at risk.

Now I'm all for armed self defense, but once the bad guy is not a threat, it's just stupid and dangerous to go all vigilantly and run after someone trying to shoot them in the back.

Oh man. This is Maryland. Things are going to get very very bad for this man in short order. As stated in the article "no charges have been filed against the owner".

Only in the Progressive stronghold of Maryland would that sentence be necessary. Once any politician finds out that the owner has not received a public flogging that will change in short order. By the end of the week he will be arrested for attempted murder, discharge of a firearm, and at least a dozen other charges. Governor O'Malley is going to be on his a s s like flies on shiat.

Cop's right too. Most major metro police departments have strict rules against firing at a moving vehicle except to save a life. The problem is, if you hit the driver and disable kill him, you now have a 2000 lb unguided missle travelling at 30 + mph in a populated area.

I'll never accuse someone that would rob a liquor store of being intelligent, but if the owner of the store is described like he is below, a smart person would think twice about robbing the store as soon as they walk in teh door.

"The owner, a man in his 60s who requested not to be identified, is a Vietnam War veteran who sports an ever-present parrot on his shoulder and who displays a cardboard cutout of cowboy-era Clint Eastwood near the front of the store"

Shhhh. grown-ups are talking. The sentence "no Charges will be filled" is necessary nearly anywhere in the US where his actions (firing at a moving vehicle) violate the rules for Self-defense (fleeing suspects no longer represent a danger to you), Discharge of a firearm within city limits, and reckless endangerment (even cops don't shoot at moving vehicles). I'm MD-Born, MD-raised and MD-barred, and only inthe paranoid fantasies of the NRA is MD considered particularly anti-gun. It only seems that way because VA is bug-fark nuts in the laxity of their gun laws

yeah, that's pretty rough. how you fire three shots at an SUV and completely miss it is beyond me. If you're that lowsy of a shot or if it's that far away by the time you're ready to fire, don't fire.

A man fires a rifle for many years. and he goes to war. And afterwards he comes home, and he sees that whatever else he may do with his life - build a house, love a woman, change his son's diaper - he will always remain a jarhead.

My dad frequents Pawn shops and one of his buddies manages one over in Fort Worth and said one time a kid came in and ask 'Have you been robbed yet'

Without blinking an eye a clerk behind the counter pulled out a rifle and said 'Have you been shot, yet'

A while back, we had some dumbass tyeenager rob a pizza store with a gun and hit one of the patrons with it while ordering the manager, a former military man, to open the safe. The kid kept threatening to shoot the manager and patrons. There was s gun in the safe. The manager removed the gun and shot the dumbass kid dead. No charges were filed against the manager. Dumbass kid was lauded by his mother as a 'good boy'.

He's lucky he didn't hit it. If I've learned anything from the movies, it's that firing at bad guys in a get away car results in a massive fiery explosion. I've seen it many, many times.

Well technically the bad guy is still a threat (especially to his next target)...just not a threat to the store owner.

Ask for one, have a good reason for wanting it.

I like that better than the "Must issue" that VA does, or the "Want to strap a hogleg to your hip and walk around town? No permit needed" standard VA has for open carry

I think it's reasonable that my fellow citizen have an actual need to walk around with instant access to a killing machine before he/she is allowed to, but that's just me
