My first thought as well, then I saw that it wasn't about drinking, it was about depressed freshmen. Wisconsin freshmen are happy about their drinking

I went to Case Western when the ratio was about the same- it's a lot closer to 50/50 these days, but in my year I was still the only woman physics major. Sounds nice, but gals in such situation say "the odds are good but the goods are odd" with good reason.

I remember going into every single freshman dorm systematically on Saturday nights when we were bored to tears and there was nary even an alcohol-free party going on. And there was a foot of snow outside, and we were stuck in Cleveland. I hear it's nowhere near as bad anymore though.

Bonus: most of their baseball team is hispanic. The guys are all from the south and didn't have a chance in TX or FL or other heavily fortified baseball states to get into college on a scholarship, and most had never seen snow. Heh.

What is the cut off point from a MAJOR earthquake happening to something being labeled as a NEW earthquake? How can they tell it is an aftershock of THAT earthquake?

I read on wikipedia just now that there is math to figure out the length of time for each fault based on movement of said fault. For example, the New Madrid fault that freaks out the Midwest would still be in aftershock mode until next year. 200 years!

RPI in the early 80's was in the 7:1 range, before factoring in that all appealing females were allocated to the hockey team - but to be fair, if you were a female would you date one of five thousand desperate pimpled aspergery dorks with BO, or the guy who's about to sign with the Red Wings?

Also, it's in Troy.

Poughkeepsie, Newburgh and Utica look at Troy and say JESUS, what a shiathole.

We're freaked out about it? Last time I saw geologists talking about it in the paper they were discussing it possibly being completely deactivated and posing little to no risk in the future.

Not that I buy that, but I don't see folks thinking about earthquakes around here much at all much less freaking about it.

BTW, back on topic, what was the justification for a slide show here? A bullet point list would have worked just fine. There was no information conveyed by the snapshots of random buildings and no unique text associated with each slide.

Considering that your choices don't expand any without an actual degree, but your debt burden does, farked is exactly what most of these students in these colleges are anyway.

I thought this was going to be a party school list. Who cares what freshman think? They said nothing about how that effects the other second year and above students.

Oh and Ft. Lewis college? Seriously? It's a miltitary base college you idiots.

When I was growing up in Missouri we did earthquake drills in school because of the New Madrid fault. Some psychic made a prediction. All very silly.

Oh and people who complain about the men to women ratio at a college usually are the same people who don't know how to talk to women.

I'm looking at you RIT alum and current student body.

The history of Texas A&M's football program should land us somewhere on that list.

As a midwesterner who spent 4.5 years in in the Coastal Bend of Texas recently (Corpus), when I saw TAMUK pop up, I immediately thought, "Yep, sounds about right."

Surprised I didn't see TAM-CC or Del Mar on the list.

I think that the university = binge drinking culture is more of american origin.

Sure we have parties here ind Denmark, too, but we already got drunk out of our collective gourd back when we were teenagers, so it's not all that attractive when you gotta get up and follow seminars or give presentations.

It may not be all that attractive but that doesn't mean I'm not looking for a challenge.

As a Badger alum, I can tell that the party aspect of UW-Madison in no way influenced my decision to go there. It did, however, profoundly influence my performance when i was there.

I think the worst male to female ratio I've ever seen is Full Sail University. I didn't go there but live in Orlando and its pretty much all dudes and a few uglies sprinkled in. There are a handful of babes ( my friend was one ) and she said no one talked to her, just stared ...and her professors gave her As when she knew she deserved at most a C

3:1? Hahahahahahahahaha you lucky bastard!

Universidad de Chile Engineering School, mid 90's. First day. I'm in a class of Introductory Physics with about 120 freshmen (first year was about 600-700 freshmen divided in 6 sub-sections. Second year was about 150 students who passed everything, 100 repeating any of the four 1st year Intro (physics|algebra|calculus|compsci) courses, and the rest dropped off during the year or didn't make the cut for repeating. A firm believer in culling the herd, that school) and about 10 are women. 5 of them qualify for "easy on the eyes". The one sitting next to me has a fuller beard than I have at 18. 3:1 ratio? I'd have loved to have that :)

Nowadays it's better, in the rare ocassions where I go back to school, usually to have lunch with a couple of friends who became teachers/researchers, there are even a few head-turners and the ratio looks more like 3:1 or maybe even 2:1. But back in the 90s? You *prayed* for sharp knees.

Tat'dGreaser: Who cares what freshman think?

Freshmen opinions of their schools are almost exclusively based on the following:

1. parking
2. quality of dorm rooms
3. availability of their favorite food
4. number of people they've met who like them
5. simplicity of classes

How appropriate -- a depressing college named after a depressed President.

Fun fact: All three of Franklin Pierce's died in childhood. The last remaining son died in a train accident right in front of his parents, a few months before Pierce's inauguration as President.

I wouldn't consider any university on that list as much better than a glorified community college. Of course people are going to party more there.

I think one of the things that encourages this is that in the USA the chances that you are moving out from home and going to live at a campus dorm are way higher than in the rest of the world (what with the USA being so farking big). Bunch of teenagers grouped together with relaxed adult supervision => mayhem.

In my country? I don't think there are any campus dorms anywhere in the country, then again, the population of this country is around 16 million, with anywhere between 6-8 million living in the same city. You don't go to a dorm, you stay at your parents' house, and if you are from out of town, you rent something, but there's no "living on campus", ergo less opportunities.

/of course, and as always, I could be full of shiat :)

I wonder how Southern Illinois University - Carbondale fell off the list. They used to be way up there. I was not uncommon to drive down Highway 51 at 3 in the am and almost run over a bunch of drunks walking in the middle of the street.
