Because it's not?

OMG, Apple added voice commands to the iPhone that works a little better than the version Android phones have had for the last several years. Android is doomed!

When they add "Siri" to the dictionary, you might have an argument, sir.

FedEx understands Apple's ENTIRE business model. You can even see Steve Jobs sitting at the head of the table!

Link pops.

It's bad enough sitting on a train or in an office and listening to someone hold a conversation on their phone. Can you imagine being surrounded by people talking to their phones? And saying things over and over until it gets it right?

I use Pannous Voice Actions (not Google Voice Actions) which works just like Siri but I only really use it when I'm driving. For one it's great to be hands free but also I am alone in the car.

Siri, find me some midget amputee porn.

Proprietary voice recognition software that runs on a phone is a Google killer? How the fark does that work?

Reading through the article, it just sounded like covert stock pumping to me.

When Siri can sauce 4chan, then maybe.

Is that guy just a hockey fan, or is "where the puck is going" the new business catchphrase that is going to drive me bonkers for the next few months?

larrimo: Reading through the article, it just sounded like covert stock pumping to me.

That was covert? I'm not particularly skilled at the fine art of flattery, but even to my untrained eyes that was blatant. Particularly when over half of the points being made were "sure, it doesn't do this now, but just you wait...." It's either stock pumping or an Apple fanboy trying to warp reality through sheer force of will.

Wow, it seems like some forbes writer has to make some cash off his apple stock before christmas, voice recognition software is out there and has been for a while, the problem is that in environments with background noise they are useless. My atrix will find whatever I want using the voice commands but now transfer that to a bar or loud space and it rarely works, same with siri.

Get back to me when they isolate and recognize only one users voice, then it will be worth something.

Steve Jobs was fond of a famous Wayne Gretzky quote: "A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be."

That was the biggest load of shiat I have ready today. And I read a LOT of shiat.

I assume 'journalists' like him serve the purpose of making claims that even the vendor dare not, them being bound by advertising laws and him being free to flat out lie about the product's abilities.

LOL at this article. Voice rec junk has been around for awhile, a nice novelty in phones, the "personality" is gonna extend that novelty, but until it can do things with precision faster than fingers can it the novelty will die out.

/doesnt help that you look like a moron having a conversation with your phone

Why would Siri kill Google, that is all it does is voice activated Google search.

The privacy issues bothers me. We need good voice recognition though. Maybe a throat mic and sub vocalization?

GOOGLE is the Google-killer. They seem hellbent on self-destructive irrelevance by bell-and-whistling their functionality into obsolescence.

Siri is not the problem.

good advice: NEVER take seriously anything a business magazine (Barron's, Forbes, etc) says about technology. They have a terrible track record and are often painfully clueless. The business press was among those cheering the initial ouster of Jobs from Apple, and they advised Microsoft to replace Gates as CEO around 1990 since he was a techie and not a business pro. You know, like the guys that run companies into the ground and take their $20 million parachute.

I guess people have forgotten that Google farmed the fark out of people's voice queries with GOOG411. (new window)

They apparently are mainly using it for indexing audio content, but how hard would it be for them to put it to use in something like Siri?

Its true, I googled it.

"Voice recognition has been the next big thing for 15 - 20 years."

For people who never learned to type.

This. And voice recognition software has to be 100% accurate before it can even think about replacing typing a query. Not 99%. The 1% error would frustrate the heck out of users.

Read through some of this guy's past writings. Apart from the Apple and Steve Jobs worship, he seems to have taken up some sort of vendetta against Google (and its leadership) on his own, almost like he's trying to avenge his master's death.

Anyway... Siri's neat. Google killer? Hardly.

Oh brother. Unless Apple does something, all other previous tries other companies make are crap. So I guess we'll never see a Fark story about how good Google Translate is (and a lot of my foreign friends say it's pretty good at translating) but when Apple finally gets around to making a translator, it will be declared the best ever.

I enjoy my Apple stuff, and Siri is neat and all, but this article is ridiculous. If the author actually thinks that, he's a crazy person. Android even has similar alternatives available, they're just not 1st party solutions.

Doesn't Siri use Google in it's searches? Why would they want to kill the hand that's feeding them?

Bing is more of a Google killer than Siri. By far.

/doesn't Siri look to Google for its answers?

Siri means "penis" in Georgian. That is all.

Here's one reason why Siri will go down the drain:

ENGLISH.

It even has problems with British guys, what do you think will happen with random Pakistani, Kenyan or Brazilian?

That damn thing saved our asses in france two weeks ago since people in france speak very little english(the nerve of them!) I would just leave this thing up and the earbud draped around my shoulder and cheat by looking down. It works great and we had very few issues.

And yes I was being sarcastic about the french not speaking english, the french people were actually nice people.
