FTA:

"Yeah. I'm a grown man, and I can do what I want to do," Dickey said in an interview with New York Magazine.

I believe he also runs with gangs.

The Mets did finish ahead of the Marlins.

Perhaps he will find the frozen carcass of a leopard.

And he'll STILL probably end up low and away

Nope, just some vultures and a hyena.

His name just sounds old school cool.

Hope he remembered the bridge-building equipment.

"Kilimanjaro is often underestimated because it can be walked and is not a technical climb. However, many mountaineers consider Kilimanjaro very physically demanding." (new window)

still on my list, but after elbrus, aconcagua, and denali. i don't even care to do it except that it would allow me to have completed over half of the seven summits.

It's not too bad, first three days are moderate at best, it's the summit day where the fatigue sets in and it gets really wretched. Fell asleep twice standing up when we stopped for water. Never know how your body will react that high up though, saw a couple overweight people make it farther than one of my rugby mates did, who knows.

Let me know when/if you guys make it out there if it's in the near future, I can put you in touch with the guides I used, bout $300 cheaper than the next guys.

since Kilimanjaro's snow caps will melt soon, why not have a un-eco friendly city dweller that promotes pollution christen this event.

it's years away for me, only because it's really nothing more than an afterthought. my next four summers are advanced alpine rock climbing school, elbrus, aconcagua, and denali. then kilimanjaro, and only if i have the money. like i said, it would be cool to be able to have completed over half of the seven summits, but i have literally no desire to climb kilimanjaro in and of itself; it's just the cheapest of the remaining four.

but any info you want to share is always appreciated. eip.

I'm not sure this is the best idea. After John L. Smith (MSU's football coach before Dantonio for you non-Michigan Farkers) climbed it, it just seemed like he got dumber and crazier.

i am so surprised he's managed a career... He was straight garbage during his stint in MN

nice story, is Kilimanjaro treacherous?
Mountaineering is a great sport and did I have read almost every book on the devastation and triumphs of the scaling such mountains.

Not the route we did, Macheme (spelling?), but I'm told there are one or two technical routes out of the five if you want to make a go out of it.

Day four is the diciest, the last stretch before summit, but nothing overly dangerous - your hiking/climbing up/across rock faces, so you get to use your hands to hoist yourself around. To be honest, if it was dangerous we didn't notice because we were having too much fun from the break in the 10-hour monotony marching.

And any fear any of us had was immediately squelched when our porters went past us in flip flops, ratty polos, carrying 75lb rucksacks on their heads. They even stopped for smoke breaks.

Sounds like you're already overqualified. I taught some orienteering in Colorado before so I felt comfortable, but my friends that I went with were amateur at best.

Best advice I can give? Make sure you bring enough pills. Stay on your doxycycline rotation, and ample supplies of diamox, some general Advil/Aleve, and some anti-diarrhea. Our guides weren't big fans of Diamox since it's a diuretic and you'll need more water, but I wasn't taking any chances with the stories of the migraines I had heard about.
