The Mata goal was nice, but this was the goal of the week.

All you have to do to make any match that "electrifying" is have awful defending on both sides.

I will be saving this for future use in other Fark threads.

I watched an American football game on TV last night that ended 63 to 60. Without overtime.

/electrifyingly bad defense
//or defence, if you must

It was a fun match to watch as a neutral, even with the defensive mistakes.

JerseyTim: The Mata goal was nice, but this was the goal of the week.

One day I'll learn the physics behind why those balls can curve like that.

/can kick a mean curve on a ball himself
//but only when I'm trying to kick straight

Obvious refutation of dumb soccer guy had to be made with that headline.

Sorry.

As a die hard United supporter, I have to say...That was by far one of the best matches I've seen this season. Defense was awful, but watching John Terry slip and fall and give up that goal was just bloody hilarious.

Ugh, we get it, you like hockey...it doesn't make it better.

Yeah, the occasional game like that is fun, but the premise of TFA that this is a great "sales pitch" for the Premier League is ridiculous since most matches have competent defending and are thus likely to be lower-scoring. Learning to appreciate defending in soccer is, I think, the biggest hurdle to Americans enjoying watching the sport, and anybody expecting lots of matches like this one is in for disappointment.

Ima let you finish, but that that 9-8 Jets over Flyers game the other night was one of the best games of all time. Of all time!

Q: Just how competitive is the Premier League? A: Not very

Sonofa... I was actually, strangely enough, watching this game early Saturday but ended up turning it off when the kids started arguing. I "only" saw three goals, plus one beautiful play voided by a legitimate offside call.

So it's the Big 3 and Little 14, where's the other 3 teams?

As a hockey and soccer fan, I must disrespectfully tell you to shut the fark up.

JerseyTim: The Mata goal was nice, but this was the goal of the week.

I don't know what I'm more impressed by on that goal: the fact that he got it around that big Stoke keeper or that he got that much curve on the shot while on the run like that.

/I can see curve like that on a stationary ball, like during set plays.
//But I can't remember if I've ever seen a ball curve that much on a shot in open play.

Who argues that the Premier League is top to bottom competitive? The phrase "top four" exists for a reason.

The author of that article was arguing with nobody.

How often do the 3 promoted clubs go right back down the following year? All the time? Also, is it the same 6 clubs alternating years between the Premiership and the Championship? I imagine there must be more parity down there, but that 1-year boost of Barclays money must provide quite the advantage...

That's interesting, but all it seems to do is affirm the continuing cycle of clubs that spend millions earning millions more to grow their teams beyond the means of the competition. One passage from your linked article caught my eye:

Rangers and Celtic have perhaps suffered from that at times in Europe, which may mean that the domination of European football by Barcelona and Real Madrid many have predicted is not quite so sustainable as many think.

Which sounds sensible at first, but to be certain I checked to see how much these clubs spent on transfers over the summer.

Barcelona spent €80 million and earned €45.9 million.
Real Madrid spent €55 million and earned €11 million.

Meanwhile Rangers and Celtic spent €3.6 million each. Aberdeen spent €100,000 on one player and the other nine teams in the SPL relied entirely upon free transfers.

In both cases these teams utterly dominate their leagues, but in the case of both Spain and England the sheer amount of money available to the largest clubs completely changes their situation in terms of constructing their teams and consequently in European competition - not to mention the massive additional income from extended runs in the Champions League.

______________

I assume those are earnings from the sales of players. I know it takes money to make money, but the end consequence of buying and selling these players for millions is the money earned in the CL.

Manchester United got €53.197m in payments from UEFA. This comprised more than €27m for their performances from the UEFA Champions League group stage onwards, and another €25.9m from the television market pool.

Barcelona's triumphant run to the title at Wembley in May earned them a total of €51.025m. The Spanish club's performance-related payments amounted to €30.7m and they also collected €20.3m from the TV market pool.

Barça netted €9m for winning the trophy thanks to their 3-1 success over United, who picked up €5.6m as runners-up. The other major earners from the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League were Chelsea FC (€44,523,000), FC Schalke 04 (€39,750,000), Real Madrid CF (€39,288,000), FC Internazionale Milano (€37,982,000), FC Bayern München (€32,562,000) and Tottenham Hotspur FC (€31,133,000).

Then you have the domestic TV deals...

People that whine about teams that suck in the American pro leagues and act as though the answer is promotion/relegation. (Basically, people that know nothing about English soccer except that they have promotion/relegation).
