He was never a serious candidate.
He's had tremendous professional success as a bullsh*tter and he's not used to being challenged on anything. Muslims, fences, abortion, tax plans, he had no more than a talking point and a soundbite. He just wanted to sell some books, not answer serious questions; he never prepared for that.

Look at it like that, it makes perfect sense.
