He offered $1.3bil for the Cubbies.

Since the Dodgers value dropped in 1/2 considering how well this season went for us, I'm thinking he can afford this.

Seeing as how there might not be an NBA season, he needs something to do.

Cuban?

- No, Dutch-Irish

2011-11-02 11:03:36 AM
Will never happen. Baseball is still with the old boys/gentlemen's club mentality, and they will never get someone as maverick/outspoken as Cuban in.

Seriously, they rather let McCourt buy the Dodgers basically on a credit card than allow Cuban pay upfront, with cash.

Also, i have an intense hatred towards the Dodgers... and as much as I like Nolan Ryan, I'd have loved the Rangers to be owner by Cuban instead...

Yeah, MLB was able to block Cuban from buying the Cubs, but he came pretty close with the Rangers.

Agreed. Cuban's behavior track record is a deal-breaker among MLB owners. No way they permit it. The spectacle of Cuban sitting behind home plant yelling at the umps probably gives Selign and Co night sweats. For better or worse, Selig likes a nice and quiet league, with owners that are hardly seen, much less heard.

Rumors say the MLB actually sold the rangers at a lower price to Ryan's group just to prevent Cuban from buying it.

Also, Cuban has already said it on several interviews, including one with Cowherd, that he would never get into a bidding situation for a MLB team ever again, only a direct transaction.

Although the Cuban-Crane group had made a $390 million cash offer, part of a $598 million bid, the Greenberg-Ryan bid was considered higher because of how the bids are structured; it included a $10 million to $13 million breakup fee that would have been paid to the Greenberg-Ryan group if it lost. "I wish them the best," he said after shaking hands with Greenberg, Ryan and their attorneys. "They deserve all the credit in the world, and I wish them complete success," Cuban said. "We had our price we were willing to go up to, and their last bid pushed us to our limit. We couldn't bid again without going over our price."

While I would hate to share my awesome owner with anyone else, Dodgers would be lucky to have Cuban at the helm.

TrancePI: Since the Dodgers value dropped in 1/2 considering how well this season went for us, I'm thinking he can afford this.

It's not a matter of if he can afford it. He can afford just about anything he wants. It's a matter of whether he thinks it'll be a successful venture or not.

Shrugging Atlas: The spectacle of Cuban sitting behind home plant yelling at the umps probably gives Selign and Co night sweats.

Ya know... he doesn't really do that any more. He's been much calmer lately.

TrancePI: Since the Dodgers value dropped in 1/2 considering how well this season went for us, I'm thinking he can afford this.

The Dodgers went 82-79 and the team value dropped by half because of that? They missed the playoffs by 8 games, not 80. They have the probable NL MVP in CF, an ace that should get Cy Young votes (but not win), and a handful of reasonably exciting young folks.

I doubt the team value dropped by half, but whatever it did drop by wasn't because of the on-field product being roughly average. Blame all the off-field debacles.

Not unless the prospective price drops:

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said he looked into buying the Los Angeles Dodgers, but backed off because current owner Frank McCourt's asking price of $1 to 1.2 billion was too high, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

"At that price, I wasn't interested," Cuban told the newspaper.

However, Cuban said he would be interested should McCourt come down in price.

"At the right price, I'm interested," Cuban told the Times. "Not if the price is over $1 billion."

Cuban has previously fallen short in attempts to buy the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers. In August 2010, an investment group led by Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan beat out Cuban in a bankruptcy auction for the Rangers with a bid of nearly $600 million.

The price will drop as McCourt has to pay his ex-wife the settlement ($175 mil) by next February or so. I don't think Frank has the time to drag this out and get the best possible price.

Would love to see Dodgers competitive again and I don't think that only Cuban can achieve that. Basically any owner that will not raid the team's money will field a competitive team because Dodgers bring in a lot of money.

This past year the attendance was down because of an active boycott by the fans.

I was just referring to the precedent he's set. Whether or not he's currently doing it isn't really the point. And I'd bet anything he'd revert back at least to begin with to make himself known and bring in the attention.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not at all criticizing him or his behavior. I think he should be allowed to buy a MLB team, and would make a great owner. Personally I think MLB in general needs more owners like him, and less corporate suits that aren't even recognizable to their team's fans.

The sale will be an auction type deal, supervised by the bankruptcy court....Forbes Inc estimated the Dodgers and all its entities were worth $850 mil (+/-) a few months ago when he entered bankruptcy...he owes the ex $150 mil or so in the next 6 months plus the other creditors (Bryan Stow is on the list asking for some $50 mil)...he needs a billion to satisfy all creditors and close out the bankruptcy and come out even...

/personally, I hope the cocksucker doesn't get it and has to live in his farking car after all is said and done....

I wish I was a multi-billionaire, and could afford to lose a lot of money just to have some fun--I'd buy the Dodgers. I'd sell it after a year, but I'd have a lot of fun during that year. Among my first moves would be to:

--Trade Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw, and Andre Eithier to the Giants for Barry Zito (whom I would sign up for a new 10-year contract)

--Acquire Brian Matusz from the Orioles, and make him the opening day starter. Also sign him up for a new 10-year contract.

--Hire Joe Buck as the team's new full-time play-by-play announcer. I couldn't bring myself to fire the great Vin Scully, of course, so I would either wait until Scully retires to do this, or encourage him to join the Giants broadcast team instead.

--Change name from "Los Angeles Dodgers" to "Anaheim Dodgers of Los Angeles"

--Discontinue sale of Dodger Dogs at ballpark, replace them with tofu dogs. The only beer sold at the ballpark will be Natty Light, and it will be $12 for a 6-ounce cup.

--Change uniform/cap colors from Dodger Blue to the new theme, Dodger Pink

--Impose new policy where stadium gates will be locked immediately after the first pitch and late-arriving fans will not be admitted to the ballpark. Gates will not be unlocked until the end of the game, so fans must stay until the final out is recorded.

Then, on my second day of ownership, I'd have even more fun!

1) No, that was the Bankruptcy Court. The proceedings required any buyer reimburse the Greenburg/Ryan group $x, so his bid always had to be higher by more than the increment of the offer (I believe $25 million). In other words, he didn't bid more for the team, but his cost was more.

2) Cuban has already said the price is likely too high and the corporate mess McCourt created is not worth tackling.

Sure, it's the point. When I was 21, I acted a certain way. I don't act that way any more. Does that mean that people should assume that I'll always act the way I did when I was 21? Because I think that'd be silly. People do change. And I think we should give him credit for that.

Frankly, I love it when he gets all riled up. I love that he saw discrepancies in officiating and sought out to prove it with numbers. I love the way he absolutely does not give a flying fark what some people think of him. I love Mark Cuban. There, I said it.

I should write him an email and let him know. He'll probably read it because he's awesome like that.

(I would, though, add to your list: "Pick up the medical tab for the poor bastard who got his ass beat." That would recover the Dodgers' reputation -immediately-, nationwide. Hell, I'd bet even the Giants would wear Dodgers Blue uniforms on the first Dodgers visit to PacBell Park.)

Hope he gets the team. Seems like an interesting character and that can only be good for the game. But I'm sure Selig will find some way to screw it up.

I understand why they fired Quade, but two things made me think they may not:

1) No matter what, they are still going to suck hard next season. Too much dead weight tying up roster spots and payroll. With only one year left on his deal, why not let him take the hit and then let him go and owe him nothing?

2) With the Cardinals' job open, I'm not sure why they want to compete with them. I would think most managers would take the Cardinals opening given the choice.

Again, I see why they did it. Theo has to be seen doing something at this point to get the ball rolling, and it's an obvious move to make.
