This could be an epic thread if voting for slogans was allowed.

Are we resurrecting the overpopulation myth again now?

I already fark a bear. What are you talking about?

2011-11-02 12:34:42 PM
Wait. Wouldn't it be....don't wear a condom, save a polar bear?
Because we'd get aids or super aids if you're in africa, we die out, animals live.
My logic is sound.

Remember this from your sex ed class?

"Wear a condom and save an endangered species. This little piece of latex may be your best chance at ever seeing a polar bear in the wild."

No. No I do not. What the fark?

TapDancingTamarin: /Cover your tweedle!

Stanley Tweedle is a god, a warrior, and a gent
We are not fit to suck on his feet or dine on his excrement
At night we croon by the light of the moon
Of his courage and his creed
Hey, ho, there he goes; woe, woe to his foes
Long live the Tweedle seed!
Stanley, Stanley, top of the hero class!
Stanley, Stanley, we live to kiss his ass!

No, no! You got it wrong! Wear a condom or you won't get to fark a polar bear. How the hell can you go polar bear farking if they are extinct? That's what I want to know.

2011-11-02 12:38:03 PM
I hope they're giving those condoms away in India and China. Octomom aside, the overpopulation problem is not occurring in the developed world.

For this statement...I love you. Not that way cause my wife would be a tad upset about it but it reminds me why I favorited you long ago.

Relic84: Are we resurrecting the overpopulation myth again now?

Came here to say this. There is no overpopulation crisis, economic development will naturally stabilize populations during the next fifty years, and we will have enough food assuming farmers in poor countries are allowed to use best practices. Focusing on the climate fight (which is real and won't go away) in the rich world and economic development in Africa will actually help endangered species - cute, meaningless slogans wont. Distributing condoms in the rich world, where birth rates are already plummeting, thinking that it will change anything is not only useless but niave and is a good example why activisits have trouble changing anything.

Relic84: Are we resurrecting the overpopulation myth again now?

Population denier? The global population has actually not changed since the 1800s and any reports to the contrary are fabricated by liberal scientists looking for grant money? What's the "myth" we're dealing with here? Are we just supposed to assume that we'll never run short of resources because "God will provide" or something? Because from what I can see it's getting pretty f*cking crowded on this rock and there's not as much oil, fish, high-grade phosphorous ore, etc. as there used to be.

Yes, technological advances like the Haber process have allowed us to sustain larger populations than would have been possible without them but it's not unlimited. Even without any further growth, today's global population is not sustainable unless we get a whole lot better at closing the loop on resource consumption.

2011-11-02 01:03:57 PM
I'm thinking people who are doing the overbreeding aren't particularly concerned with saving endangered species to begin with.

If you want to control the population, the Developed World needs to control the Third World. Either raise them to our level or grind them into the dust, but don't just let them go on their merry way.

I'm curious about this statement. What naturally stabilizing force are you talking about? I'm also curious about the resources required to support a population of 14 trillion economically developed humans. Will that be more or less than what we're burning through now?

No, we're denying just about everything we know about physics, and reality in general, actually.

dittybopper: Yeah, about that whole "polar bear populations declining" thing...

What about it? The reason he was investigated had nothing to do with the results of the polar bear research done by him. He's back to work by the way, although funny how no one cared to look in the results of the investigation.

And it's not like he's the only guy in the world to have noticed that the polar bear population is declining (and moving South, to the consternation of some of the chewy two legged folk who live there).

Monkeyhouse Zendo: What naturally stabilizing force are you talking about?

Assuming you're serious, the data shows birth rates dropping to or below replacement rates in every first world nation. Last I looked, the US and France were the only first world nations not actually at below replacement native birth rates. The main stabilizing forces are empowerment of women, access to contraceptives, a social safety net that makes children as retirement plan unnecessary, lower child mortality, and urbanization that makes kids an economic liability rather than asset (on a farm a seven year old's chores make her a net economic asset to the house). The Economist puts it nicely as in the first world children are luxury pets not free labor. Population growth is driven by the third world and extension of lifespans in the first world.

Waste of resources.

This campaign is targeting those who already don't desire offspring. So it gives you a slogan, some people get free condoms, and misses the areas where greater population control may be necessary.

Relic84: Are we resurrecting the overpopulation myth again now?

Now, granted, this is a bit outside my discipline but...

I don't think the overpopulation thing is a myth at all. For the time being I think it's being hyped but this is a serious down-the-road issue.

To pretend that livable (and fertile more importantly) land is just infinite is frankly wrong. The Chinese are buying large tracts of farm land up in the nations of Africa -- the part of the world with the most staggering projected population growth rates. It will be interesting to see what happens when the populations of Africa boom (thereby increasing food demand) with the Chinese owning hundreds of thousands of acres of some of the continent's best farm land.

This is just one problem, of course, but I think it illustrates the point that this is hardly a myth.
