So they bungled the case, she won and they want her to pay the money back?
Fark that.

They should not have blown the case , they should not get the money back from her.

When Caylee was reported missing in July 2008 -- a month after she was last seen -- Anthony maintained she had been kidnapped by her nanny, Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez.

Authorities were never able to find the nanny. But they did find Gonzalez, who claimed she never met Anthony or her daughter.

Gonzalez's attorneys claim, according to questions asked of Anthony in the October 8 deposition, that Gonzalez was questioned by the police in Caylee's disappearance, was kicked out of her apartment complex, lost her job and that she and her two daughters received death threats as a result of media attention in the case.

Anthony herself said little in the deposition, but did acknowledge she was aware she was being sued by Gonzalez.

Seems like the woman who Casey Anthony accused of kidnapping her child is suing her for that.

They want the money for the search effort. Since her defense was that she knew all along that the kid was dead and just didn't want to rat on her parents, they wasted time and money looking for a "missing" child.

That said, this was probably the smartest thing she has ever done.

"Anthony has also been ordered to repay more than $217,000 to authorities for the costs of investigating Caylee's disappearance"

Last line of the article. But has people have pointed out its for the Search vs the Trial. They maybe able to get that back.

I thought that once you took the fifth, they didn't bother asking any more questions as once you took the fifth, there's no point in answering anything else as it then may undo the choice to not answer in the first place.

How does Casey Anthony take the fifth when she's been already been acquitted for the crimes she was accused?

Jake Havechek: I haven't seen a case botched this badly since OJ.

I don't think the case was botched. Her defense just pushed all of the blame on her father and painted him as a child molesting dictator that molested her, and possibly her daughter, and forced her to cover up the accidental death of her daughter to keep the fact that he was molesting her hidden. And guess what, in this age of men are evil the jury bought it.

Civil case from another party is how.

2011-11-02 09:48:47 AM
What is even the point of suing her in civil court at this point, is it just for the principal? If I had to guess, after all this nonsense, she is likely close to destitute, so even if someone does get a judgement against her, she will just file bankruptcy, and no one will see a dime.

That case is stupid to begin with. For them to successfully sue her, they have to prove Casey Anthony lied about THAT Zenaida Gonzalez and slandered her intentionally. And the woman admitted she had never spoken or met Anthony. So..... I mean...... that right there proves there was no intent. So they have no case.

Not having any evidence to tie her to the crime was probably an issue as well.

2011-11-02 09:56:41 AM
Okay, fine, the article does say Anthony has been ordered to repay the cost of searching for her kid.

Anyway, she definately should repay. They may not have gotten a conviction on the murder charge, but she did admit to burying her daughter. So it's on the record that she sent the cops on a wild goose chase for a daughter she knew to be dead. I don't see any reason why she shouldn't pay that money back.

Does the fifth amendment right extend to civil cases? You can't be called to testify as the defendant in a criminal trial but you can be called to testify as the defendant in a civil trial.

They found a woman of the same name but she wasn't Caylee's nanny.

No, she didn't. She actually didn't admit to *anything* during the trial being she didn't testify. Her attorneys did all the talking for her, and they claimed George Anthony (her dad) disposed of the body.

The connection is that this woman looked at an apartment in the complex where Casey said she lived and cared for Caylee, and filled out paperwork for it before deciding to rent somewhere else. At the same time, Casey was staying in the complex with friends, and it is believed she snagged Zenaida's paperwork with her personal info on it, not realizing that Zenaida later decided not to rent the apartment.

That's how this specific Zenaida was targeted.
