As someone pointed out yesterday, 'Rango' was a fantastic movie. Too bad it didn't do half the business 'Megamind' did at the box office. I kept thinking while watching Megamind, "Why can't this be more like Rango?

Brave is the only one of that bunch that doesn't look like a giant bag of suck.

/I've learned better than to get excited over a Dr. Seuss film adaptation. Someone somewhere along the line in production will fark it up.

If you weight the movies by how much box office traffic they will generate, it will almost certainly be a terrible year for animated movies.

QFT. Loved every second of Rango, it had the perfect mix of light-hearted humor and adult innuendo. Rattlesnake Jake is probably my favorite villain of the year.

You're dead to me. Brave is the only one of the bunch (Well, and the Lorax) that *does* look like a giant ball of suck. In large part because discussion seems to suggest they neutered the original concept and turned it back into a stereotypically Disney-esque girlpower adventure.

Ice Age: Why are they making these movies?
Madagascar: WTF?

Unless there's a Miyazaki movie coming out, then it's a silver year at best.

I'd like it if they would just drop the Ice Age characters and focus solely on Scrat. I'm not sure he can carry his own two hour movie, but either a half hour TV show or cgi-shorts would be great. He was pretty much the only thing that made the third Ice Age even remotely memorable, but then again, Ice Age 3 made ridiculous amounts of money, so I'm sure we'll be subjected to several more of them in the years to come.

To this day one of the funniest things I've seen in a movie was when he got stuck in the ice in Ice Age 2.

2012 should be a good year for movies in general.

Avengers
Hunger Games

I know there are others I'm missing....

It's not Miyazaki, but Studio Ghibli is going to do their take on The Borrowers. It's called Arrietty's Big Adventure, I believe.

Brave and the two Aardman flicks look very, very good. I *might* catch Hotel Transylvania if only out of loyalty to Tartakovsky's unique style.

I think its The Secret World of Arriety, and it is probably the only one I'll take my daughter to next year, if I can help it. The Brave looks good, but I will probably pass on the rest.

I am convinced that Dr. Seuss is unadaptable by people who are not Chuck Jones. For that matter, the only "celebrity" voice in a Dr. Seuss production should be Boris Karloff.

Celebrity voice casting is generally awful.

That was actually a 2010 movie. I thought it was pretty good.

As someone who played a lot of 8-bit video games as a kid, Wreck-It Ralph sounds intriguing to me. The fact that it's being directed by a guy who used to work on the Simpsons and Futurama makes me even more excited.

Everybody in this thread demanding more Miyazaki has farking well better purchase "Welcome to the Space Show" when it comes out on DVD/BluRay on December 5th, and had better keep an eye out for the eventual release of "Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below" when it comes out next year.

It's a goddamn shame that these movies can't see a theatrical release because they were wonderful on a big screen. Both of them were very clearly made in Ghibli fashion, and both of them were definitely better than Ponyo. Where they fall amongst other Ghibli movies for you will vary on personal taste, but they were both fantastic. The first is by the director of "Read or Die", the second is by the director of "5cm/sec"

I'm intrigued by all of these, except for the Madagascar and Ice Age sequels.

I love the Aardman movies. I'm also a video game junkie, so Wreck-It Ralph sounds excellent, especially with the pedigree of the director. I also like Tartakovsky, and Pixar is Pixar. I've been hoping to see Tim Burton return to his animation roots for a while now. The others look interesting, but maybe a little less so.

While another Miyazaki / Ghibli would be nice, I'm wondering what ever happened to Makoto Shinkai (5 cm Per Second, Place Promised In Our Early Days, Voices of a Distant Star). Something from that direction would be welcomed as well. Actually anything at least 'good' that's aimed higher that the tween/preteen market would be nice. It's been decades since 'Heavy Metal' and 'Fire and Ice' came out. Props to WB for 'The Iron Giant' but even that was 12 years ago and aimed primarily at tweens.

Thanks for that (saw the post above after I posed mine). Unfortunately, if it does get released, it will probably be through some generally unheard of distributor and most likely available on line only. The only people that will ever know of it will be the 0.1% that keep up with places like ANN. I'm waiting for the day when I can see something like 'Princess Mononoke' on the big screen in 5.1 Dolby. And not just some 'art house' theater in NYC or San Francisco.

/heh, I own more Ghibli films on DVD released through Disney than I own Disney films released by Disney!

In all fairness (and I say this as a Pixar fan), Pixar movies aren't terribly inventive in terms of story. Never have been (Monsters Inc is probably the closest to something like an original story...check out what the original story was supposed to have been on the MI DVD...you'd be surprised how far they actually go from a treatment to a finished product, and it's almost disappointing how much they throw away for a more 'simplistic' approach).

What Pixar does exceptionally well is create engaging characters and beautiful visuals. And that's perfectly okay. I don't care if I've seen the same story a million times before as long as you entertain me with the way you tell it this time.

No, and this is quite obscure, but the villain of this movie was named Dr. Terwilliger and wore a hat like this in part of the movie.

Ah, OK, wasn't aware of a sequel. I think that that may be their first direct sequel. There have been a couple cross-over characters before (such as in The Cat Returns & Whisper of the Heart) but no sequels that I'm aware of. Interesting.

I watched The Cat Returns first, maybe the best English dub of anything ever. Cary Elwes vs Tim Curry? Dear lord, so good.

I then put in Whisper of the Heart a few weeks later and spent FOURTEEN HOURS LISTENING TO "COUNTRY ROAD" AND NOT WONDERFUL CAT ADVENTURES AT ALL.

Ugh.

I added this movie to my queue

I might watch it on a boat,

I might watch it on a train
Or in the dark, or in the rain.
I might watch it on a TV
In my car, or in an RV,

Really, they had to rename the Pirates movie?

Are they scared Americans won't go to a movie with 'scientists' in the title? I suppose there is a quite sizeable cadre of anti-science Christians with kids whose business they don't want to lose.

As if changing 'Philosopher's Stone' to 'Sorcerer's Stone' for Harry Potter wasn't bad enough (for which the explanation from the American publishers was essentially "Americans are too pussy to read a book with a big brainy word in the title, and too stupid to be able to cope with a concept they aren't already totally familiar with, even though it's fully explained in the actual book").

If it were the British doing it to Americans, they'd be being condescending jerks. Americans doing it to themselves is just depressing.
