Whoa... uber-cool if it works.

2011-11-02 01:29:37 AM
Sure, but does it come with magic underpants?

But with the blast shield down, I can't see past the handlebars!

Unfortunately you have to think in Russian.

Most retarded thing I've seen yet involving a "smartphone".

Option 1) Pressure toggle on handle bar to electronically gear up/down
Option 2) Go full iTard and spend silly money and man hours on jury rigging something horribly over-engineered to gear up/down

If option 2 appeals, the human race would kindly invite you to step in front of a bus. We don't need you infecting the gene pool.

Because shifting gears is so complicated and difficult?

I would pay good money for a bike with an automatic (and constantly variable) transmission that uses a goal-seeking algorithm to maintain a relatively constant pedal rate/pressure based on what the user is attempting to do.

Ugh. Why would a bicycle have more than one gear?

Don't know, ask this guy:

Something tells me that he knew what he was doing when he didn't use a fixy.

I'll say this for it:
That's finally something that would get me to wear a bicycle helmet.

The same reason there are more glasses frames than the Buddy Holly one.

I was once out drinking in a hipster part of East London and in the toilet I saw this, what is perhaps the best toilet wall graffiti i've ever seen, so I took a picture.

It has a swear, so for puritans sake i'll make it a link

On topic, what exactly makes it Prius like? Prius doesn't read minds to change gear, or does it?

I predict someone will hire Clint Eastwood to steal it.

Why should I give a penny farthing for this newfangled contraption?

Just keep it out of the road or I'll run you over.

//Still thinks its the finest example of iTardation yet.

How, exactly, does this beat the operator simply clicking a toggle?... or are cyclists generally, (averaged over a large enough group), incapable of intelligent thought beyond a certain point in the process?

"Oh, shucks. 3 miles. Time for brain go bye-bye. PLEASE SAVE ME iPHONE!"

'Prius of bicycles'

C'mon now, is it really THAT embarrassing to be seen on?

And we know how that (new window) turned out.

Would not an inability to think inhibit use of a thought-controlled gear shifting device?

2011-11-02 09:32:53 AM
Maybe it's just me (and judging from the amount of "meh" ITT, that might be the case), but I still think BCI controlled devices are pretty damned neat.

nulluspixiusdemonica: How, exactly, does this beat the operator simply clicking a toggle?

Well, for starters, this is more of a research project in the vein of "hey, can we make a useful control based on mental signals powered with commodity electronics?" The answer, obviously, is "yes".

And some of the other ideas are more immediately practical- a bike that automatically chooses gears based on location data and user preference would be pretty sweet.

I often wonder how many people actually think they would be Weeners a reference.

Wouldn't you rather appreciate the scenery?

Wouldn't that make it easier to appreciate the scenery? One less thing related to operating the bike to think about.

StoPPeRmobile: fire rear missile

That is a great (if incredibly cheesy) movie. I should watch that again, some time.

I'll give you a 5/10 for effort, but 9/10 for effectiveness. Elegant troll is elegant. Very nice.

t3knomanser: a bike that automatically chooses gears based on location data and user preference would be pretty sweet.

Not really. Going off of change in revs, change in current power, and absolute current revs might be something to work with. Trying to paint a virtual railway system for gearing would not feel very natural.

I really think it would be tough to beat Di2 for shifting interface. It can have the lag reduced, but the concept and execution of the current system is pretty sweet, especially for the front shifting.

A brain interface for shifting doesn't make much more sense than having one for steering. Just not really a good idea. Turning Siri into a thought interface instead of voice would be a move in the right direction....
