The RX-8 and the Elise are about the only cars worthy of saving. The Elise is being replaced by something better and the RX-8 has both run its course and can't meet emissions with the rotary.

It's not like they're closing the doors on any Earth-shattering vehicles. Nobody will shed tears over the Crown Vic, the single most loathsome car in existence. The HHR? Nobody cared about it when it was new. The Eclipse held on way too long, the Evo is a much better car.

A friend of mine had a 2004? RX-8. GAH what a piece of junk. He owned it for a few months and it was in the shop more than he had it, and it had already had 2 new engines put in it and it still wasn't right. He finally got rid of it after it caught fire one day while he was helping me run an errand.

At that time he also had an RX-7 and it was awesome, other than the awkwardness of changing the oil.

So long HHR, you PT Cruiser wanna-be.

I drive a PT Cruiser GT-Turbo. Awesome car, with the exception of the turning radius and the fuel economy. This damned car drinks more than my boyfriend's Charger and needs 4 lanes to do a U Turn. But it goes like stink and is an awesome vehicle for a musician that needs to take a lot of gear to gigs. Mine has an upgraded turbo too.

I can't speak for later editions of the PT, but when I took the first edition for a test drive the suspension was for shiat.

No more Lotus Elise?

And here I was about to take a hammer to my piggy bank and buy one...

The great thing about the Crown Vic is that if you saw one, you knew it was a cop or some 90 year old (What's it with old people and large cars?). Either way, you know to avoid it.

2011-11-02 03:32:04 AM
Did not expect the Ranger to be on that list.

2011-11-02 04:07:37 AM
I dunno. I owned a Caddie once...a big old boat.

But the farking thing felt I was driving on soft fluffy pillow. Man, I loved taking long trips in that thing...

So I can see how having a smooth quiet ride would appeal to old people.

Cops? They need the room for the perps and their weapons.

I just did 3800 miles in an Eclipse - nice engine, but the transmission was awful. Who still fits a 4 speed auto into a "sporty" car?

I sold my ranger for only a few hundred bucks less than I bought it for. The demand on the older ones is now pretty big.

I almost bought one last spring but opted for the F250 instead since the price was nearly the same at the time and I can haul a lot more dirt in one trip. I have my little 30+ mpg daily driver for commuting and running errands so the gas isn't such a big deal. Still, I loved my first ranger and it's sad to see it go. Hope they don't bring it back as some bastardized unibody truck.

Almost too bad about the Element. It was an interesting, if poorly received, concept.
The orange / grey rubber color scheme may not have been the best idea to roll out with a new body style.

2011-11-02 05:35:16 AM
tallguywithglasseson: if poorly received,

From 2003 to the end of 2010 it sold over 325,000 units, that's hardly a poor reception.

Did anyone not selling drugs on a college campus actually buy an element?

2011-11-02 06:22:33 AM
the RX-8 only lured 664 buyers this year through September, and Mazda only sold 1,134 last year

More people bought Smell a mints than RX-8's?

And with that, Ford has lost. The compact "pickup" truck is owned by more people, and is cheap. I never expected to pay more than $20k for any vehicle, and the Ranger was the bomb.

/could almost a guarantee an about-face in 2013.

The Dodge Dakota is one of the best little pickups I've ever owned.
The Lotus Elise and Mazda RX-8 are just plain cool.
IMHO

My first major purchase after going out on my own was a brand new 1999 Mazda B2500. I ate nowhere but the chow hall and didn't so much as go to a movie for six months to save up the money for a down payment that would bring payments into my range. I had to get rid of it much earlier than I wanted to, and have always wanted another new one.

Looks like I'll have to settle for used now.

i'm not sure how Mitsubishi is still here. the Galant is almost as old as the Eclipse, and the Outlander is getting there.

i like the looks of the Lancer hatchback, but when you start throwing options on it it creeps into GTI territory, and at that price it is underpowered and does not offer better fuel economy to compensate.

the RX8 has been a dead man walking for quite some time. I still like it, but anyone that buys one new needs to have his/her head examined.

also dead for 2012: Chevrolet Aveo, Lincoln Town Car, and the Cadillac DTS & STS (they go halfway through the year)

2011-11-02 06:39:08 AM
Honda Element was a good vehicle and the EX AWD model was awesome in the snow; like a mountain goat. Having an interior designed by Rubbermaid™ also was great for the snow and beach. Take the seats out and hose it down.

They need to take the weapons away from the perps before putting them in the car.

And nothing of value was lost.

2011-11-02 06:44:51 AM
Add me to the list of people who loved the Element. Had one in college; beginning and end of every school year it was no big deal to put up the seats and pack my entire room into the back. You'd be shocked at how much could fit inside one of those. Great, great car.

2004 rx8's ate engines if you didn't do things to them that the dealer would biatch about.... like running premix all the time. Which I do on my 2009 Rx8 R3 which I'll be keeping for a long time.

Bought it brand new for $25k last summer. $8k off sticker. I didn't need my head examined; thats a hell of a deal for a new rotary.

So what are the options for a small sized pick-up? I would love one day to have one around for practical purposes. I really do not want a full sized house towing Hick Caddy.

When I read the headline, I was slightly worried that I would read about the death of the Nissan Xterra. It's the last of a true SUV. I own one and I love it. MPG's could be better, but it's big, it's solid and it's fun to drive (like Subby's mom).
I keep waiting for the day Nissan turns the Xterra into some gay like the newer Jeep Grand Cherokees, a lifeless ride and full of useless luxury features.

Having driven both the HHR and PT Cruiser as rentals, I definitely have to lean toward the HHR. It was more comfortable (I'm a bigger guy, but your mom would still do me), had better visibility, better controls, better acceleration, and as mentioned, better suspension and could turn around much more easily. I'm still shocked at how I actually couldn't turn around in my street with the PT, and yet my 5-series, with more than a foot longer wheel base, handles it without a problem. WTF, Chrysler?

The Dodge Charger seems to be becoming more popular.

Caddies will always not suck because they're Caddies. I've owned 9, AFAICR and they are the jazz if you maintain the. the CRX and SRX always looked like Caddie was trying to be Cherman. Which is a bit silly.

The Honda element is the sort of cars that people who spend a lot of time at strip mall Starbucks with their MacBook Air buy. Which is OK, I suppose, but it's a mud ugly shoe box designed by a ritalin victim.

The Crown Vic was always too utilitarian to be classy.

The HHR has to be the most piss poor panel truck ever.

Compact pickup is an oxymoron but an SUV is a cramped station wagon on a pickup truck frame. Pickup trucks are supposed to be large.

Mitsubishi, I dunno. The Lotus, will be missed by people who can afford one.

Volvo hasn't been Volvo for a long time.

Change is good, but I can't help but think bringing back some American classics on improved frame platforms with all the mod cons would make for better Big Three sales numbers.

2011-11-02 06:56:51 AM
I have been "upgraded" to the HHR on more than oy ne car rental. The seats are just right - just right to cut off the circulation and feeling in my legs after 20 minutes. I won't miss it, but there are plenty of the things ruinng around.

Toyota Tacoma/HiLux. is your best bet. Shame about the Ranger. It was the only US model that came close.

The other thing floating out there is the new platform that Ford is working on that's based on the Ford Taurus.

If you need a real offroad vehicle and dont need a 4dor, the Toyota FJ is a fantastic ride. Body on frame, solid as hell. But it disappears in 2015...

Charger or a Caprice. Those Crown Vics were hellagood cop cars, and I know several who don't like the Charger as much.

Ok, I'm tired and may not have read everything in TFA, but am I really the only one who can count 10 vehicles instead of the promised 14?

I guess counting is just as hard as reading today.

Our cops drive Chargers.

My husband has a Chevy S10. He wanted a bare bones, standard, truck. We went to 5 lots to find it. It's a 2002 that we bought in 2005. We plan to hand it down to our son when he learns to drive.

Dad's got a 2009 Mazda BT-50 (Ford Ranger) and his only gripe with it is that the rear bumper is tiny. It looks like a 1" thick straight bar that they bolted on to adhere to some safety standard. This bumper doesn't protrude any. If you hit something, you'll probably get a dent in the lid or a smashed rear light. The 2012 models gets proper rear bumpers.

The Dodge Charger "Pursuit".
It's just set cop-car lap records at the Michigan State Police testing facility:

Dropped my Stang off at the body shop yesterday. Rental car "upgrade": an HHR. My first impression of it was that it was Chevy's version of the PT Cruiser. Being a musician myself, I can see how handy they would be for toting around half a 4-piece band's worth of gig equipment. Visibility is okay, but I can't shake the feeling- every time I look in the rear-view mirror, I expect to see curtains in the back window and a casket in back. The rear window just has that shape. At night, when you hit the brakes, the entire rear window frame illuminates in your rear-view, due to the location and configuration of the third brake light. Takes some getting used to, because it feels like you're about to be backed into. Luckily, I get my sweet Steed back tomorrow.

2011-11-02 07:20:17 AM
Dang it man. At the same price I can tell you why a Dakota is better than a full sized Dodge P/U. #!, 5 to 10mpg (Actual, not the lie on the manufacturer's sticker) and #2, maybe most importantly, it fits in the modern down sized parking spots in the shopping centers. #2 may actually be #1. LOL

I bet the HHR goes away and not a day too late. Checks list - yep, so kong fugly useless car.

Yeah, you go with that. I bought a used Crown Vic about two years ago and I drive it like hell. Thanks for getting out of my way, though.
