I remember seeing that when it was originally in the theaters. I was 18-19 years old at the time & didn't know what to make of the movie at the time.

My older brother had the soundtrack album and played it to death. "Penis Dimension" is as familiar to my ears as the Brady Bunch theme.

Netflix has the film on streaming, btw

Not quite as coherent as, say, "A Hard Day's Night." But hey, they both had Ringo...

IMHO, the Flo/Eddie 'Vaudeville' period was Zappa's least interesting. Funny, sure, but not as challenging as the bands before and after. Best thing to happen to him musically was getting pushed off that stage in London.

The logical question being, which artist ought to be pushed off the stage next?

I'm a Zappa fan but this movie didn't work for me. There were some funny parts and I know there was budget issues but it just seems like the idea was bigger than the movie and there's only so much you can jam into this.

Did like some Flo and Eddie stuff, kind of where my name comes from. Love the Fillmore and Just Another Band From L.A...

To this I can only answer... (new window)

I don't do publicity balling for you anymore...

The first word in this song is discorporate.
It means: to leave your body

Discorporate & come with me
Shifting; drifting
Cloudless; starless
VELVET VALLEYS & A SAPPHIRE SEA:
Wah Wah

Unbind your mind
There is no time
To lick your stamps
And paste them in
DISCORPORATE
And we will begin...
WAH WAH!

Flower Power sucks!

Diamonds on velvets on goldens on vixen
On comet on cupid on donner & blitzen
On up & away & afar & a go-go
Escape from the weight of your corporate logo!

UNBIND YOUR MIND
THERE IS NO TIME
Boin-n-n-n-n-n-g
TO LICK YOUR STAMPS
AND PASTE THEM IN
DISCORPORATE
AND WE'LL BEGIN

FREEDOM! FREEDOM!
KINDLY LOVING!
YOU'LL BE ABSOLUTELY FREE
ONLY IF YOU WANT TO BE

Dreaming on cushions of velvet & satin
To music by magic by people that happen
To enter the world of a strange purple Jello
The dreams as they live them are all mellow yellow

UNBIND YOUR MIND
THERE IS NO TIME
Boin-n-n-n-n-n-g
TO LICK YOUR STAMPS
AND PASTE THEM IN
DISCORPORATE
AND WE'LL BEGIN

FREEDOM! FREEDOM!
KINDLY LOVING!
YOU'LL BE ABSOLUTELY FREE
ONLY IF YOU WANT TO BE

Absolutely, I'll take Baby Snakes over this any day. FZ's musical/compositional skills improved ten-fold by then.

I think he might have HST'd himself during the Bush Jr admin, or his head would've exploded on its own.

This was not FZ's finest hour. The only part I really like is the guitar solo on "Magic Fingers". The rest just doesn't hold my interest.

This is not the only "meh" in FZ's legacy, however. "Thingfish" is positively unlistenable.

My fondest memory of this film was watching it with Jimmy Carl Black at a gathering in 1985. While I was stoned, I kept looking at the screen and seeing Jimmy and then turning to my left and looking at Jimmy. Definitely one of those "Oh Wow!!" moments.

I know Zappa's not everyone's cup of tea, and to be honest there's an era or two of his I'm not that fond of (Broadway the Hard Way for instance), but of all the musical styles I phase in and out of -- prog, metal, swing, classical, jazz, whatever -- Zappa unifies them all, and is the go-to playlist when I can't figure out what to listen to.

There's some good stuff in 200 Motels; not all great, but some excellent performances, and I believe some foobies at one point (everything's better with foobies).

/music is the best
//musical taste isn't a contest

I remember Ringo playing Larry the Dwarf, who was playing Frank Zappa within the film, and how he wanted to stick a magic lamp up a nun. That nun was Keith Moon. Frank himself never spoke, and ran around with a camera. The now-extinct Drive-In TV Channel in Canada did a double feature one Friday of Head, The Monkees' Movie, and 200 Motels. Frank was in both.

Courtesy of IMDB:
Rance Muhammitz: [as a TV show host, holding a microphone] Hi Larry, its good to have you back on our panel!
Larry The Dwarf: [holding a magic lamp] Hi Dave, its really great to be back on your panel!
Rance Muhammitz: I'm sure the people at home would be interested to know why such a large force as you is all dressed up like Frank Zappa. Tell us Larry, whats the deal?
Larry The Dwarf: He made me do it, Dave. He's such a creep. He's making me hold this aladdin.
Rance Muhammitz: And why is he making you do that, Larry?
Larry The Dwarf: He wants me to fark the girl with the harp.
[Keith Moon as the nun peers out from behind the harp grinning]
Rance Muhammitz: He wants you to fark the girl... with the harp?
Larry The Dwarf: NO, no! With the magic lamp! He wants me to stuff it up her and rub it.
[chuckles maniacally, host stares at him]
Rance Muhammitz: Let us ask our studio audience: if you had just been lowered down here on TV with a wire connected to a brown leather harness, forced by crazy person to insert a mysterious imported lamp in the rep-rep-rep
[has trouble pronouncing word with thick German accent]
Rance Muhammitz: into the, into the RE-productive orifice of a lady harpist, and you were a dwarf... would you do it?
Larry The Dwarf: YES!

/find me some Communist bastard, and I stomp on his face 'til he don't move no more

My college roommate was a big Zappa fan, and he showed me this movie. It had a few funny parts, but overall, it was just a meandering, drug-hazed testimonial that you shouldn't give a camera to someone who is stoned out of his gourd.

Lord, have mercy on the people in England
For the terrible food these people must eat
And may the Lord have mercy on the fate of this movie
And God bless the mind of the man in the street

Help all the rednecks and the flatfoot policemen
Through the terrible functions they all must perform
God help the winos, the junkies, and the weirdos
And every poor soul who's adrift in the storm.

Help everybody, so they all get some action
Some love on the weekend, some real satisfaction

tarkus1980: I've never seen the movie, but the soundtrack is awful.

"You can take this needle here, and hang it from yer ass!" -- Lonsome Cowboy Burt

That quote was on the soundtrack LP album cover. I never understood the context till I watched the film...

Just mention Zappa and some idiot will start reciting lyrics.

I saw the whole thing back in 83. But about all I remember is that my eyes hurt afterwards.
