I bet you'll feel like a pretty big farkin' idiot if it turns out that what makes pigeons' throats shine so iridescently actually ends up being the cure to AIDs, cancer, and world hunger.

There are a whole lot of stupid people who manage to graduate college with a C average. And some move on to med school and graduate that with a C average. I don't want them cutting me. I don't want them wasting cancer research money. Go sit in the corner and play with the shiny bird throat.

We have AIDS and cancer right where we want them: generating profits for the health care industry.

more poetically known as rock doves

The checklist name changed to rock pigeons a few years ago.

Somehow I don't think anyone at the Institute of Optics is going to be involved in solving any of those problems. However they may one day produce the sort of biomedical optics that help.

I believe it *sounds* like "rock pigeons" but is spelled "throat warbler mangrove"

Do you know anyone in college, in med school, or in cancer research? Sounds like no because you might otherwise know that c grades don't get you into med school, most med schools don't grade on a letter scale, and that most research isn't done by mds (though a lot of good research is).

Pretty tired of this trope. The idea that research is worthless - or even a waste of resources - because it's not a cure for something is lame. Who knows, a new highway paint could be developed based on the pigmentation in pigeon throats, and one of your grandkids' lives could be saved 50 years from now. Or not, and we still know more now than we did yesterday.

I think what he was trying to say was:
What do you call the guy that graduates at the bottom of the class in med school?

Doctor.

Look, we all know it`s going to be some kind of effect similar to butterfly wings where minute structures refract the light in some weird way and will lead to new types of material for aeroplane design, medical instrumentation or some shiat like that.

didn`t RTFA

We need more research into how to get the government to listen to the people with connected papers on how to get them to care about what they hear. And this sort of research, just not only this sort.

Everyone is always supposed to do everything for cancer! Every time you don't cure cancer you murder a child. Stop playing video games, stop going to work, stop breathing, just cure cancer.

Everybody look! BeautifulBob thinks that the people researching nanostructural optics are the stupid C students who couldn't make it in oncology.

Idiot.

Yeah, science sucks! Next thing you'll be telling me they found a way to make better solar cells by studying butterfly wings (new window)

Stupid fundamental research, what did it ever do?

Reverend J: Yeah, science sucks! Next thing you'll be telling me they found a way to make better solar cells by studying butterfly wings (new window) Stupid fundamental research, what did it ever do?

Exactly, we should only fund the continuation of research of which the results directly benefit humans. Fundamental research is for the birds...

AIDs? You taken the apostrophe stand way too far. It's spelled, "GRID'S"

I suppose saying "I do, but lets keep your mom out of this" would be too mean, so I'll just say that I don't. But I do hate it when a strong opinion is expressed by someone who clearly doesn't understand any aspect whatsoever of what they mouth off about.

Well doesn't two of those fix the one? Also, two of those don't take science to control.

Great show, and should be required watching for all children who vote.

I figured this out when I was 12!
When you shoot them in the head, the compression wave causes a distortion in the neck feathers which then refracts the light of Venus through swamp gas causing the feathers to appear iridescent.

For crying out loud! They're flying rats for farks sake, why does anyone care?
/probably could have gotten a grant for my work.

Not quite sure how some minor snark got people all twisted but for that struct gets cursed with one of my new golden tickets. Enjoy your free month of TotalFark. You'll fit right in with your superior intellect and timely "your mom" jokes.

Easy for you to say with your fancy new total Fark access, while I'm stuck in liter land with an insulted mom.

The guy I white knighted in the process hasn't even offered to sleep with me....
