Do you think they would accept money in return for stopping this madness?

It should have no trouble finding Sarah Connor.

In addition to moving like a human being, it also simulates breathing and sweats when made to do a lot of work, like running and doing pushups.

Sounds a lot harder to spot than the 600 series.

Can't they put heads on these things to at least make them not seem so creepy? I'm creeped out by anything humanoid or beastlike that either doesn't have a head or has something else where its head should be (like Pyramid Head from Silent Hill).

Okay, one clown head, comin' right up!

I read that as "BigDig Robot", which is a robot that kills people with falling tiles.

Someone at Boston Dynamics will read this and respond by attaching a tiny doll's head for nightmare fuel.

Teach it some fencing moves, and I'll fight it at Arisia for the lulz.

2011-11-01 02:46:41 PM
the problem is how much power does it use? I guess in a combat situation they would be useful for storming a house or something though because it would be over fairly quickly after the occupants crapped their pants to death.

Test test army clothes? Yeah, right. ;-)

Will they be going berserk and killing all humans?

Mechanical slaves.

Listen, and understand. That Petman is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.

Old news is old. There have been Petman videos out for months and I saw the new one with the shove weeks ago.

The scary part is, this is what Boston Dynamics is showing the public. Imagine what's in development that they aren't.

Why on earth do these people keep insisting on bipedalism for robot locomotion? It's not really a great way to do things. It's top heavy and unstable. Something like a robot centaur would be a better design. Stability, and can still have arms/tools/LAZORS

*PHASED* plasma rifles, subby. Unphased plasma rifles have significantly less effect per watt.

I dunno. The versions of bigdog that I saw were powered by a 2 stroke engine. Not the stealthiest thing in the world.

2011-11-01 02:52:10 PM
I think that's a phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range.

After all, the non-phased version just isn't as effective.

I watched that music video muted because I'm at work. however, my brain decided to add a soundtrack:

Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk
I'm a woman's man, no time to talk
Music loud and women warm
I've been kicked around since I was born
But now it's all right, that's okay
You may look the other way
We can try to understand
The New York Times' effect on man

Stayin' Alive, BeeGees

So, on the eve of a make-or-break deadline on which the future of the company depends, will the project leader try a new memory chip onto which his emotionally unstable teenage daughter downloaded her personality?

Though thinking about it I suppose they could disguise petman pretty easily... Beware of illegal immigrants with leaf blowers, for all you know it they could be two-stroke engine powered robots of death.

Why would a t-shirt maker do this?

Because anime.

Bipedal man-sized robots are a good design for many logistical reasons, not a priori reasons. A man-sized, man-shaped robot can ride in (or possibly drive) a car, wear human clothing (for various reasons), move around easily in normal buildings, etc.

If you stop and think about it, it's not so complicated. Some robots have specific intended uses that don't need to have this kind of capability. A robot centaur can't easily masquerade as a passed-out homeless guy until you walk past it.

big dog was at first. The production versions are two-stroke and very very loud.
