"You wouldn't recognize him, but I still leaned down, gave him a hug and gave him a kiss, and four or five of the fire department guys started crying, but I wasn't going to let my boy go out like that," Dunn said. "That's my boy."

dammit. sniffelling like a little girl over here.

Why'd the dog go back into the burning house?

That guy must have really loved his dog to hug it's smoldering, greasy corpse. shiat I wouldn't even hug my mother if her body was pulled out of a burned down house. Jesus...

He said he had been sleeping in the living room of his home and using a space heater during the recent cold snap.

But he said the space heater was the only thing plugged into that circuit and was on a ceramic pad with nothing within four feet that could catch fire.

The dog probably caused the fire that burned down his master's house.

....You guys are going to stone me, aren't you.

I wonder what happened that made the dog wriggle out of the collar? Poor guy. What a dog. I need to go hug mine now.

Jake Havechek: Greater love hath no dog than this, that he lay down his life for his human.

I'm not so sure that the dog meant to lay down his life, as much as he was thinking "hey, hey, hey, open the door for me, wake up, it's time for me to go outside."

"I got in my truck, started it and backed it out of the carport and realized I had [Duncan's] collar and he wasn't there."

"Damnit, Scott."

I wonder why the dog went back in? Whatever the case, I like to think he's
eating steak somewhere, waiting for his buddy to join him some day.

Luckily, there are onions in my burrito or I would a hard time esplaining to my cube-mate why my eyes are watering...

Fark you, subby...

Damn it. Do you think my boss would care if I missed my last few appointments because I had to go home to hug my dog?

Near this spot are deposited the remains of one who possessed Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity, and all the Virtues of Man, without his Vices. This Praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery if inscribed over human ashes, is but a just tribute to the Memory of Boatswain, a Dog. ~George Gordon, Lord Byron, "Inscription on the Monument of a Newfoundland Dog"

Something sounds fishy. How did he grab the dog by the collar, get to his truck and then realize the dog wasn't there?

My humble opinion: "Wasn't feeling well" = "Hammered" and "Grief stricken" = "Guilt".

2011-11-01 03:35:28 PM
It was very kind of the firefighters to find the pup and give him a proper burial. Worried for the guy, though - losing your home is one thing, losing your closest companion is another.

/Good dog.

There's video of a dog trying to pull another dog that was hit by a car out of traffic. I've also seen squirrels defend a dead fellow squirrel from dive bombing crows.

I was okay until the firefighter/goggie hug part. My god I just crumbled.

Thanks Fark.

I hate to say this, but I kind of agree. How could someone not know that their dog wasn't attached to the collar?

I feel really bad for this guy, of course, but that just doesn't sound right.

Either way, really sad story.

So, the firefighters not only put out the fire, but also buried the guy's dog? Damn, those guys do everything.

Oh, I'm not saying the dog didn't want to alert him. I'm just saying he probably didn't plan on dying over it. I'm still unclear on how the owner ended up with the collar and not the dog, but I'm guessing the dog thought they'd both be going through the door once Scott opened it.

If he grabbed the dogs collar to take him with how could he not know hes not there its not like a boxer is a Yorkie or a Toy Poodle. Thats at least 60 pounds of dog right there.

Definitely something isn't 100% right. It was apparently at night and the guy might have been confused, but it is a boxer and not a large dog like a mastiff, the guy could have just carried the dog.

Maybe he grabbed it's collar, took it to the truck, let the collar go to open the truck, and turned around and the dog had ran back inside.

I agree. I think I'd notice if my 9 pound idiot chihuahua wriggled out of his collar and he had an average sized dog. Still, it made me sad.

For those of you mocking dogs and their owners, that's fine, this is Fark after all.

But if you think a dog doesn't form a bond with their owner and will protect them with their life you are dead wrong. My dog went after three men harassing my wife without even a moments hesitation. Chasing them away and protected my wife. I trust that animal more than most people.

Some 15 years ago late one night, my wiener dog Roxy nosed me awake ... a fire had broken out in the downstairs garage. I was able to put it out with a hose before the fire department got there. Turns out a wire had shorted out and had been smoldering for some time.

/good girl Roxy

Err, you ever wake up midsleep, totally unaware of your surroundings and completely disoriented, and all hell is breaking loose around you and you need to GTFO or die? You make mistakes. You're operating on half a cylinder . I wouldn't blame anyone for that.

This is why I'll never rescue a baby from a burning house... you get burning baby all over you and it makes you late for work.
