JackieRabbit: It mostly evaporates. And remember, when fuel is dumped the plane is traveling at about 400 mph, which spread the fuel over a very large area. Fuel is usually dumped over water or some unpopulated area if possible.

A transatlantic flight, plus dicking around in the air for a while trying to fix it probably meant it didn't have a whole lot left to dump anyways.

bulldg4life: Since when can these things land without the landing gear and not turn in to rolling tumbling fireballs?

It looks like from the video that the runway probably had some type of flame retardant sprayed all over it.

my favorite tibit about flying with Poles is that they all applaud when the plane lands.

/I bet they gave the pilot a standing ovation

Yeah, according to Polish TV reports, the runway was foamed before the landing.

I have to say from my experience flying on Lot Polish Airlines, the pilots are pretty damn good. Always a smooth landing.

Good thing this didn't happen in Brazil. The pilot would've never found the runway.

Warthog: Videos and stills here, on a Polish news site (new window).

In all seriousness, the pilot put it down more smoothly than most transatlantic flights I've been on where the wheels did come down. Good jorb!

With gear you put down harder because you focus the force and don't want to bounce and risk snapping one off be slipping.

In a gear up landing you ease it in as slowly as you can and try to bleed off energy slowly. You have no need to clear the runway quickly, and can take as much of it as you need(all of it).

You also have the pilots on absolute perfect attention mode, so they will have thought about the conditions many many times.

It's just a guess though, I could be wrong on the procedure. Maybe you want to pin it down like landing on a carrier...

My flight test experience was limited to testing helicopters. Only one emergency landing in one due to the transmission for the tail rotor dumping it's fluid mid flight. Didn't risk a soft landing there. We touched down fast. (and my back still farking hurts)

What's your point?

It's just Tagbiatching™, welcome to Fark.

I'd call it more of a non-story biatch. Is there anything MORE Not News than "Airplane injures nobody". And for those of us that get newflashes texted to us for the Not Not News, it's a very slight annoyance. I had to set my coffee down to click my mouse twice and see what the story was.

Oddly enough, my LOT Airlines flight from Warsaw to Toronto was canceled on Sunday because of mechanical problems. Glad I got out of Warsaw yesterday since the airport is now closed. Looking forward to hearing more about this.

They dumped the fuel. Good move.

Always wondered, who picks the place to dump the fuel?

Does it hit the ground, or does it evaporate? I wouldn't want a few thousand gallons of jet fuel raining down on my house.

Atomized due to pressure, speed, and altitude.

I may have shot a few lbs over Atlantic city in a KC135 just to see...

(that's what happens when you let the HS student fly the boom.)

I suppose that's why I never got the ride in the AC130. ;)

Agreed. I liked Lufthansa, too. Delta on the opening leg of the journey, not so much.

I loved Warsaw. Probably never get to go back, sadly.

It was a Commercial airline accident. While not a crash, it's still something quite rare. If they started sending out NewsFlash emails for every commercial incident, then yeah, it would get annoying. If it bothers you, sign up for newsflashes from the AP and Washington Post instead of Fark.

It also helps that Cpt. Eugeniusz Wrona is a member of the Polish National Team in Glider Aerobatics.

Setting 'er down easy is one thing, but they do get to practice that every day. What's really impressive is maintaining directional control all the way down the runway (apparently), especially once the rudder lost authority, and not sliding off that ribbon of concrete far enough to dig a nacelle into the dirt.

The fuel tanks are always dropped in an area designated for this and are later recovered.

No shiat... I wish the Continental pilot flying that 757 we took from Birmingham, UK to Newark had put it down that smooth when we landed back in the US. He hammered it into the runway like he was trying to catch the 3 wire, then the plane started to slide sideways- thankfully they got it straightened out but that was bullshiat of the highest order.

I'll take this belly landing over that ANY day.

/good jerb to this flight crew

Airbus / Scarebus continues its ritual un-prosecuted pre-meditated killing of passengers world wide. From forcing tsunami destroyed countries to buy Scarebus to get aid, to failing the A380 150% wing-loading test, Scarebus builds on its reputation for falling out of the sky. FL35, cruise and it "breaks up". Nice. Good planes.

darwinsmonkey: You know who else (new window) used to make polish jokes?

Yeah, the poor Poles got screwed from every direction during and following the WWII era.

They were double penetrated by the Nazis and the Soviets at the start of the war, though we never blamed Stalin (our precious "ally") even though the Poles hated the Communists so much that they sometimes welcomed German advancements - even going so far as to slaughter Polish Soviet sympathizers when the opportunity arose.

Farking hypocrisy.

They end up in someone's living room.

Happened in San Antonio years ago. Aircraft (F-16 I believe) took off from Kelly AFB, lost its engine, pilot punched the tanks, and glided over to Randolf AFB. One tank ended up in someone's living room.

I stand corrected. The pilot diverted to San Antonio International.

Call to emergency services from the runway:

"Help! We just arrived at the scene of the plane crash and I think they are all dead!"

"Okay, before I tell you what to do next, you need to make sure."

BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG!

"I think that did it. Now what?"

1000Monkeys: Polish authorities found the cause of the crash. It was due to an instability caused by a Pole on the right side of the plane.

Came here for this. Leaving with a satisfied Nyquist stability criterion.

probesport: JackieRabbit: There is no such thing as a "crash landing." This was a wheels-up landing. Had the plane come apart and burned up, that would have been a crash. But, as all pilots know any landing you can walk away from is a good one. ;-}

[mostworld.org image 300x225]

Even though you could walk away it was still bad.

Hey, my wife was on that show. Morgan Fairchild, yeah, that's the ticket.

Lot, of course. My family is Polish, and I've flown Lot many times. Every time there is a problem, breakdown and mechanical "Ehh, just send them up." We started to fly Lufthanse cos it was only a matter of time before Lot's bravado and laziness bit them in the ass.

/glad everyone's okay
