hdhale: StoneColdAtheist: Tatsuhiko: Hmm, if this is still the thought process in Saudi Arabia, I'm just going to file this under "Third World Country" and ignore it.

You realize, I presume, that slavery was only outlawed there in 1962?

I say "outlawed" because it's still widely practiced there in all but name.

So then timeline wise they are up to around 1855-1905 in terms of their culture. I think that's giving them too much credit.

It can be a great place to live and work if you're male, white and are employed by a major international corporation or government. Otherwise, not so much.

While I of course abhor the death penalty in all its variations I have to say that this is one of the cases (along with serial child murderers) where I think they might have a point. If you put to death all spiritual mediums, astrologers, psychics etc you would have made the world a better place. Throw in spoon-benders, dowsers, faith-healers, clairvoyants, homeopaths, remote viewers, telepaths, palm-readers etc and you would have taken a great step forwards for civilization. Even the Bible says that you should not suffer a witch to live. There should of course be a fair test. If you claim to have paranormal powers and can prove that in some sort of repeatable double blind test you obviously are not a witch, you are just using an aspect of the natural universe that our science has yet to fully understand. If you fail the scientific test it is clearly a form of magic or witchcraft and you should be burned to death at a stake (or more humanely beheaded).

Alternatively publicly renouncing your claim to supernatural powers might also be enough.

As a citizen of Christendom, which stopped executing people for witchcraft a whole 350-400 years ago (except in Africa), I sneer in derision at Islam, and it's inferior, primitive culture!

Although, it's pretty distant. If you didn't know what was going on, you wouldn't figure it out.

I could do with a little MORE graph, actually.

Weird thing... I expected that crowd to break out cheering when the head came off. Not a peep out of anyone. Is that normal for Saudis at these things, or were they stunned by the mistreatment of the victim?

Are you trying to infer that the bible has any similarity to these traditionally nomadic desert dwellers? Are you trying to show that there is any room in a Christian society for the persecution of people based upon flimsy kangaroo court trials? Are you saying that a person who follows the bible word for word would be morally content with such atrocities?

... oh.

Carry on, then.

Meanwhile, most of your fellow Americans believe in ghosts, angels and that an invisible sky fairy watches you fap in the shower. Also, here in America, you can be executed for nothing more than being conveniently black and unable to afford an attorney when the pressure is on to close a case.

nekom: Their methods are all wrong. Everyone knows you need to see if they weigh the same as a duck.

that was my first reaction: these fools in Saudi Arabia will never rid themselves of demons and sorcerers using outdated methods. A far more logical procedure would be to simply gather everyone at the town square, have everyone point out folks they don't like very much, then have those folks roll seven dice. Anyone with dice rolls that add up to 35 or more would be summarily executed, as they are marked by the devil, obviously. This would encourage folks to be "likable," and would cut down on awkward social moments later on, as those no one likes pretty much try to keep to themselves or make a mighty effort to be polite, friendly and honest in public and even in private. Also, you have to admit, their entrapment strategy is an ingenious way to reveal con artists.

When people get executed for dumb shiat like this, its generally NOT for the crazy sorcery reason. This guy just ended up on someones shiat list, so they made up this excuse to kill him for the lulz.

Reality is usually far less dramatic and crazy than we like to think.

What do you think causes these problems? Rational beliefs? Do you know what percentage of enlisted men believe in a sky wizard? Violence, irrationality and superstition go hand in hand.

2011-11-01 01:43:40 PM
Sure - I mean, it's not like our police have the power to walk into homes on silly, trumped-up charges and execute them. And our politicians certainly don't want to use religion to control the masses and use it as an excuse to steer public policy toward fear and control. And it's not like they would ever, ever keep citizens from exercising their human rights. No, never.

For everyone saying the US is no better: Really? Granted the US (and individual states) do their fair share of stupid/irrational/wrong/morally reprehensible things, but there is no comparison between the two. Completely different scales of f'edupedness. What is the thing that is railed against in the US is often the norm elsewhere. Speak up about the issues? In the US that doesn't get you killed.

Our criminal justice system has its faults, and some glaring inequalities expressed in the capital punishment brigade that I abhor, but how can you even equate our multiple-appeals-enabled, public-trial system to this:

"In a secret trial, where he was not allowed legal representation, he was sentenced to death by the General Court in Medina in March 2007.

I'm surprised they needed four years before a parking lot was available, with that setup.
