The only way the young group of Oakland receivers are catching passes from Carson Palmer next week is if they're wearing Bronco uniforms.

Amazing how the team in Cincy seems to be doing alright with the same god-awful coaching and front office as last year.

That's what you want to do, Oakland. Re-create the 2007 Bengals. Go ahead, trade the Pats the rest of your draft picks for Chad Johnson. Call up Rudi Johnson and see if he's interested in a tryout, he's only been out of the league 3 years.

You're on the right path, the SuperBowl is just around the corner. Keep farking that chicken.

Wow. Carson really is that dumb?

A little part of me was willing to believe that the Bengals as an organization may have deserved 100% of the blame, but this? This makes me think Carson was at least part of the problem.

Because their offensive weapons aren't all 35+? TO's out of the league and I don't know if CJ's caught one pass in NE.

And the losers' schedule. I've rented this movie, so SPOILER ALERT: The Bengals have an OK season, maybe even get to the playoffs (I still wouldn't hold my breath on that one). Next season rolls around, the NFL gives them the mid-level team schedule, they flounder, a player gets an injury, fans ask Mike Brown to look for a player to fill that spot, Brown laughs while wiping tears away with spare $100 bills, and the Bengals suck for another season. But, they get the a first round draft pick next season, and everything will be different after that!

Obligatory.

Clearly TO wasn't down with his program, or maybe he's just "Too Old"

Err, I take it as Palmer being diplomatic to TO. Who wants TO on their team? Housh is a decent possession receiver and the Raiders have no real veteran presence at receiver.

People can keep blaming the front office, but the front office wasn't throwing the 20 picks last year. A very young Bengals offense is doing a better job than last year's team any way you cut it.

Also, the 2012 teams have already been announced for the most part:

Home
Broncos
Raiders
Cowboys
Giants
TBD AFC East
Cleveland
Baltimore
Pittsburgh

Away
Chargers
Chiefs
Redskins
Eagles
TBD AFC South
Browns
Steelers
Ravens

I thought TJ had a few more good years in him (~2-3) when the Ravens had him last year. Good possession guy, not really a deep threat, but good at slant routes and slipping into open spots in coverage. I was kind of sad when both he and Mason left Baltimore, but I'm not sure how many more years Mason had (apparently none), and Boldin really has stepped up as a good veteran guy.

TO, on the other hand, seemed past his prime and more into antics than catching last year. Add that to a major injury and (probably) demanding too much money and he's bust. He pushed the hand he was dealt too hard and he's done. He just hasn't realized it yet like Randy Moss has. They're both done for good. TJ has a chance for one more run, but that train is fast leaving the station.

For someone who acts as if they are some kind of football genius/prophet, it's amazing you still don't know that the schedules are prepared years ahead of time, except for 2 games. It's been this way for....well, going on nearly a decade. The only 2 games we don't know about the Bengals next year are the teams that finish in the same spot in their division in the AFC South and AFC East as the Bengals do in the AFC North. And since we can safely assume the Bengals will finish at best 2nd or 3rd in the North this year, place your money on them playing the Titans or Jaguars, and the Bills or Jets (assuming the Patriots and Texans win their respective divisions). There, you have the Bengals schedule next year. It's worked like this since realignment in 2002.

They didn't get a "loser's schedule" this year, they just happen to play the NFC West. And the AFC South isn't as strong as it usually is without the Colts at top. That's just luck more than anything. One of the two games they drew this year because of their "strength" last year was Buffalo. They won that game, against a good team. The other was Denver, which they lost.

This schedule was determined years ago. Welcome to the last decade of football.

He might have "seemed" like it to you, but it was actually a decent year for him. Better than when he was in Buffalo and on par with his last season in Dallas. He put up decent fantasy points, but the issue was that the Bungals did not use him effectively in red zone situations and Palmer has a limp noodle for an arm. They guy is old and has done some dumb shiat in the past, but he's a very savvy receiver.

T.O. now has a bad knee to go with "old as dirt". There's nothing he can actually do in the NFL at this time. 10 years ago he could have played on a fairly fresh knee reconstruction and still been better than 80% of the guys out there. Today, he'll just suck.

TJ would be a good person for that, as he didn't exactly show up in the NFL, or in college for that matter, as a guy who was expected to go to the Pro Bowl (he had to work his way up). Obviously he's not in his prime anymore, but he can still provide the aforementioned experience and presence to show the younger guys how it is done.

A big flaw in the modern NFL is having a receiving corps full of athletes, not receivers. Oakland has both, but they could benefit from some age and NFL wisdom. TJ is NOT of the same status of TO, or even Chad Johnsocinco, and I'm pretty sure Carson Palmer has enough experience with him to understand that.

Now, TJ did have an attitude in Seattle, but you have to ask how much of that had to do with the environment in the locker room.

That being said, I think there are better options for Oakland.

2011-11-01 07:58:39 PM
What I like about TJ is he was a solid over the middle/slant receiver, which the Raiders could use right now. They have the guys to stretch the field, but Carson needs his 7 yard routes to be precise, or at least run by someone he's familiar with.

The bad part of this is it means he's taking someone's spot. I guess Schilens is done.

puffy999: Now, TJ did have an attitude in Seattle, but you have to ask how much of that had to do with the environment in the locker room.

Let's not forget that TJ met with the Vikings prior to signing with Seattle. His reason he stated that he chose Seattle? Strength at the QB position. That was the same year Favre later came in and destroyed the NFC North. Can't blame the man for being bitter, making the wrong choice.

netweavr: He could want TJ on the roster to help coach the younger receivers.

There's a lot of merit here. A vet to the role is a huge boon to a young receiving corps. Sidney Rice was a product of Favre's experience.

Even if he is slowing down, the Raiders have a need for a possession guy since Zach Miller has flown the coop. Palmer wants a 3rd down target he knows he can trust. No shock.

From my understanding they would have liked to have him back as Nnamdi was gone no matter what and Gallery needed a change of scenery. Tom Cable's firing burned the bridge to him re-signing though.

You could ask Cable, Miller and Gallery how the Seattle move is treating them....

Hopefully. Schilens is a good receiver--when he can actually RUN. But the man's more fragile than a Yugo in a Minnesota winter.

Not to the Raiders necessarily, just in general. He's still easily able to do it and he deserves a ring for being one of the best of all time. Raiders aren't winning any rings this year or any year they have the Interception Machine at QB.

Al Davis isn't even cold yet, and the raiders are a completely different team. He would have thrown Pryor into the mix and saved his draft picks. They're destroying Al's 5 year plan in a matter of days.. so sad.

EyeballKid: the NFL gives them the mid-level team schedule

You do realize there are only 2 games on the schedule that depend on the previous year's standings, right?

2011-11-02 12:47:49 PM
I'm pretty sure at some point there was a talk between Palmer and Oakland's management where Palmer told them that TJ was a guy he could work with and a guy he could throw to. Giving Palmer a known set of hands to throw the ball at seems like a pretty smart move to me, especially when they picked him up on the cheap.

The Slush: You do realize there are only 2 games on the schedule that depend on the previous year's standings, right?

In '09 they got to face the AFC West and therefore looked good. This year they get to face the NFC West. So really, six games.
