Yep. Just going by the description in the article, I knew it had to be a Chick tract.

Why do we let these miserable jackholes exist?

Since the 1970s, hasn't every American kid received at least one Chick tract in his/her Halloween bag??

Leave your outdoor Halloween decorations up until after the New Year.

I'll be working on mine all week.

2011-11-01 04:52:42 AM
Damn, I just handed out condoms. I'd better step it up.

2011-11-01 06:45:46 AM
My kids got "Jesus Loves You" pamphlets. None had people killing themselves in them.

2011-11-01 07:08:47 AM
These kids nowadays, where's the TPing, egging of said houses?

I would've ran to get the eggs and TP.

I bet the kids in that Chick Tract would've given them their opinion of such crappy handouts.

2011-11-01 09:28:55 AM
I handed out condoms to kids this year and told them to 'play safe.'

2011-11-01 09:42:20 AM
Lol wow what a particularly whacky tract, which is saying a lot. If you don't believe in God then damnit, he will kill all your children until he saves you because he just loves you that much!

2011-11-01 09:49:21 AM
Anyone seen any decent atheist tracts? Google is mostly turning up crap.

2011-11-01 09:55:38 AM
I'm with Mitch Hedberg on this one, it's like somebody saying "Here, YOU throw this away."

2011-11-01 10:07:13 AM
I think it would be fun to throw in some Cthulhu Tracts along with the candy. Maybe I was a weird kid, but I would have loved it.

Lorelle: Since the 1970s, hasn't every American kid received at least one Chick tract in his/her Halloween bag??

I never did. New Jersey is too far gone for them to try to save.

2011-11-01 10:15:37 AM
A friend of mine in Texas gave out a bunch of candy yesterday, but had to shut her porch light off sooner than she expected. Not because of parents from several miles away dropping kids off in her neighborhood -- she's used to that by now -- but because teenagers and even adults were stopping by for free goodies. What kind of societal misfit knocks on strange doors asking for candy when they should be out in a bar somewhere?

I can see where Chick tracts would be useful in certain circumstances.

/I had only three trick-or-treaters last night, so lots of leftover candy for me!

I know I will

Mostly because of laziness but also because it's a kick ass cemetery scene.

Yep- plus per the Chick tract version of religion your kids are in hell cause they heard that preacher say there's a heaven and didn't heed it.

Whenever I read one of those I always conclude that if there was a God and He was the Chick tract version I'm pretty ok with going to hell instead of the alternative of hanging out with Him and His followers for eternity.

2011-11-01 12:33:35 PM
This guy is a grade A douche, no doubt. But, it's his choice to hand out whatever he wants to people who comes asking for things at his house. Next year it will be the choice of the kids to 1) avoid his house and 2) egg and TP the everloving shiat out of it. This is how free market Halloween should work.

2011-11-01 12:33:47 PM
The ironic part is that Halloween is a Christian holiday.

That is pretty closeminded. You are saying our first amendment can only be used by people you agree with?

I was born in '71. I didn't become aware of the things until the web proliferated - probably about 1997 or so (though I do know after the fact I saw the D&D one back around college). Heck, I even grew up in the Bible Belt (TN) and never got one.

Are those things for real or the ultimate in trolling fundies? I love reading them because they make me giggle - and I'm Christian.

I'm convinced these Baptists are farking idiots.

Halloween has nothing to do with the devil or anything like that.

It's the eve of All Saints Day which is a generic holiday to honor saints who don't have their own days. At some point, Halloween was conflated with Samhain and random druidic and pagan shiat.

The First Amendment stops the government from muzzling free speech. It doesn't say you can say any stupid thing that pops into your head, and suffer no consequences for it.

Clearly I've been missing out.

That is true, but just because you think its stupid, doesn't mean it actually is. I mean, really, what basis do you have to judge stupidity?

and be careful how you answer that, because I am reading very closely.

"Will there been an afterlife, I wonder? Choirs of angels? Or a fiery pit? One unlearns these falsehoods over time, but the child who learnt to fear hell is never really gone. To tell the truth, I think I had enough of afterlives as it is - this one has been pretty purgatorial. Almost fifty years floating in supercooled jelly like some medical specimen, thoughts creeping like rats through cramped silicon corridors of machines trapped behind video screens and camera systems. Never sleeping, never resting, never ceasing to think about the world no longer belong to. No, if this is a taste of the afterlife, I think simple oblivion will do nicely."

Halloween (a contraction of All Hallows' Evening), also known by Hallowe'en or All Hallow's Eve, is an annual holiday observed around the world on October 31, the night preceding All Saints Day. Much like Day of the Dead celebrations, the holiday has origins in Christianity, as well as festivals of harvest time and festivals honouring the dead, particularly old Celtic and Druid ones

Bathia_Mapes: And, surprise, surprise...it's a Chick tract (new window).

There used to always be a pile of these in the bus station when I was a kid. I woudl always steal them and sell them to the younger kids for a penny each.

I was doing the lord's work, but not for free.

Thisity.

I understand people believe that kind of crap... I really do. What boggles my mind is that people can believe that kind of crap, believe they are correct, and believe it is a *positive* thing and should be forced on others. Fark that.

"Try to be a good person" is great.

"God says I should try to be a good person," is, I guess, acceptable. I don't need an invisible observer in the sky to behave myself, but maybe some do.

"God will kill your children unless you believe the same things I do" is psychotic.

Some people need to be told repeatedly. The devil is trying to blind them to the truth and its up to the apostles of god to help rid the non-believers of the influence of the Devil. Don't you want everlasting glory?

The three must sacrifice for the good of the others. A small price to pay for candy.

FTA: "He says the pamphlet was inappropriate for small children, and that his church doesn't preach such "scare tactics.""

Douche bag, you obviously do preach such scare tactics, as evidenced by your use of scare tactics that you are apologizing for. Are you suggesting that you don't tell people that there is a hell and that they'll go to it if they don't do what Jesus wants them to? No I didn't think so. See those are scare tactics.

Why do religious people and republicans think they all have the Jedi mind trick. Worse still why does it seem to work on so many people?

2011-11-01 12:47:44 PM
Luckily, no one handed out pamphlets to our kids. We got a harder time from people interrupting football (it was all in good joking fun).

And WTF is with people leaving all their lights on, having decorations out front, but no candy?

Seriously, one guy just sat there reading his newspaper, lights on, shades open, decorations out front, but no candy. You'd think after two or three groups of kids he'd turn his light off or close the shade.

2011-11-01 12:48:06 PM
I'm proud to say that I never received one in my childhood neighborhood.

rostit: That is pretty closeminded. You are saying our first amendment can only be used by people you agree with?

The First Amendment does not insulate you from the results of your speech from private citizens. If you act like a douche, expect to be treated like one.

They should egg his house and tape his car.

squirrelflavoredyogurt: Why do religious people and republicans think they all have the Jedi mind trick. Worse still why does it seem to work on so many people?

because the rest of you are to deluded into thinking that God isnt the path to follow. You put all of your 'faith' in things like science, which aside from a few people is the devils work. If you spent half that time believing in the lord, you would understand. Have fun in hell.
