From TFA:

The rock legend listed eight services that record labels and music publishers have traditionally provided to artists, such as editorial guidance and "creative nurture".

"Is there really any good reason why, just because iTunes exists in the wild west internet land of Facebook and Twitter, it can't provide some aspect of these services to the artists whose work it bleeds like a digital vampire, like a digital Northern Rock, for its enormous commission?" he asked.

Sorry, Pete, I guess bands now will have to get by by directly connecting to their fans and having compelling musical ideas, not because some recording industry scumbag brought a DJ a bag of coke and a couple of whores.

/yeah, but he's a pervert

Indeed it's a changed business model. Deal with it or get out of the business. Does he think people should be forced to purchase newspapers or that subsidies must be given to buggy whip manufacturers?

Any '70's super group faded into crap more than the Who?

Poor Pete. It must really be a struggle to get by when your own personal net worth is a paltry £40 million.

Seriously, Townsend can't really believe that the recording industry had artists best interests in mind, can he? Is he serious?

Really, Subby? A Pete Townshend and child porn slam? What's next? Nixon's NOT a crook? No, no... how about "Clinton likes blow jobs?" The good news is Jay Leno has a spot for you on his writing staff. Welcome to Hollywood. Or as I'm sure you call it: "Hollyweird." Keep up the cutting edge work.

Pete Townshend said "a creative person would prefer their music to be stolen and enjoyed than ignored"

Not most of the ones I met. I've seen people give up art altogether because of art theft.

/Personally loves being "stolen."

Well, to be fair half of them are dead and you can't expect Roger Daltrey who must be about 90 by now to still sing like he used to.

I'm just waiting for them to play Octogenarian Wasteland

Damn - you're just mean. I guess it's still too soon. How many people died? 19? Let's see IIRC.

Nope, it was only 11.

Meh 11 out of about 20,000 isn't so bad, is it?

He's a very smart man and a living legend. He spoke out strongly against headphones a few years back and blames them for his hearing loss. It's not surprising to me that he doesn't like Apple either since most people use headphones with their Apple devices. I don't agree with him but I understand where he's coming from. That Fark headline is just evil and I'm sorry that it got a green light. Those of you that don't know the music of The Who, I just feel sorry for you.

Not sure if serious. Townshend didn't say headphones per se caused hearing loss, IIRC, he just said using them to listen to loud music was damaging.

Pete's old and so are his viewpoints.

If he were young and starting a band from the ground-up today they would be different. The fact that he can't acknowledge that is tragic, but appears to be, for the most part, supported by those paid to be around and coddle him so he can make the lumbering, dying groups he points to as beacons of the industry a few more million before he kicks it and "The Who" become a solo act.

2011-11-01 09:57:46 AM
I can also understand where Pete's coming from. The article is a bit less argumentative than the headline, of course. It's pretty much an argument that says a lot of bands use iTunes as their record company now, but while Apple gladly takes their 30% cut from everyone, they don't provide the 30% of services that the traditional record company provides. No marketing, no financial support, etc. It's simply 30% for access to "the tubes." Which simply might be enough for some artists, I guess.

Has there been any artist of note who has been successful to come out of iTunes that hasn't had an affiliation with a record label? YouTube almost seems better at this than iTunes, ala Rebecca Black (and even THAT had some record label somehow attached to it).

We may as well steal his kid's bicycle...hahaha. He wouldn't mind as long as you were 7 and rode it sans pants and knickers.

I wonder how much he paid for the kiddie porn "art".

I think that Pete said Keith Moon's exploding drum kit and years of performing at 11 in front of a wall of Marshall amps caused his hearing loss.

Pete's got an interesting point but he seems to be yearning for the old paradigm when there's no going back. In the end though he seems to fall somewhere between Bambi vs Godzilla and "Old Man Yells at Cloud"

/Love your work Pete.

Yeah, Pete, the 70% of profits that artists get now after Apple's cut really sucks balls compared to the >2.5% they used to get from the labels.

2011-11-01 11:01:01 AM
The guitarist also said that people who downloaded his music without paying for it "may as well come and steal my son's bike while they're at it."

Cool; free bike.

There is no reason that most of the stuff that this guy published should be in copyright anymore anyway. The first album of theirs dropped in 1965, 46+ years ago, but he thinks that he should still be able to make money of anyone that dares play his music. It seems a little over the top to expect work you did 50 years ago to still be providing you with an income. I mean I work every day for a large corporation, I engineer new systems and come up with creative ideas that allow the company to prosper, but I don't expect them to pay me for every time they use that system. I get that we want to support creative works but 25years should be more than enough time, stop making it a crime to enjoy music and a onerous complication to find and license anything and everything you see everywhere.

Pete Townsend: Vampire Hunter

Peter Townsend, coining his decades of experience in the music industry dealing with agents, record company executives and Grateful Undead fans, turns vampire slayer when he realizes that the fans are turning into blood-sucking vampires nearly as rapacious and insatiable as Rock 'N' Roll groupies. However, his stake-out (har, har, har) of a den of iniquity (the Genius Bar at Apple) is thwarted when Scooby Doo and the Gang uncover the real criminals aren't vampires but industry executives trying to sell you the same old crap over and over and over again by constantly "upgrading" the hardware and software to force you to buy the repackaged and rehashed music a thousand times. In this episode, Townsend cries "If it wasn't for you meddling kids, we would have gotten away away with it, too!" He attempts to shake his fist at them, but is too old to lift it so he shakes Mick Jagger at them instead. Hilarity ensues.

You sid it yourself. You work FOR a large corporation. They take all the risk and pay you a wage. Therefore They then own what you create.

If you were willing to take the risk and create for yourself you would be entitled to royalties from your creation.
