Researchers on Sunday reported initial signs of success from the first release into the environment of mosquitoes engineered to pass a lethal gene to their offspring, killing them before they reach adulthood.
But the research is arousing concern about possible unintended effects on public health and the environment, because once genetically modified insects are released, they cannot be recalled.

Dear GOD, if these mosquitoes get out into the wild and breed, they'll...! They'll...! Oh. Right.

Might have a problem with your tampering with his endangered species.

And dammit, that's about all I remember of that movie. It took me three minutes to remember the title.

So mosquitoes go extinct... so what about all the other bugs that eat them? and the animals that eat them?

Now you libruls are aborting mosquitos? For shame.

An external pressure that encourages breeding at an earlier age will bring about mosquitoes that will breed earlier and we'll have more of the pests than we do now.

Plus, they'll be younger turks that don't obey nobody's law.

Eh, we're going to kill them one way or another. Better this way than with chemicals that will harm other species.

This one species of mosquito? There are quite a few. Many only bite coldblooded creatures or birds.

Anyway, they won't go extinct, as soon as they stop releasing them the engineered ones will start to get old and die. Worldwide treatment would be impractical.

For someone who's been around so long -- and with 22 of his own submissions greenlit -- one might think you'd be better versed in the ways of Fark headlines. Or headlines in general.

IIRC, mosquitoes are important pollinators. However, here's an article on "a world without mosquitoes" (not sure about the access on it), that claims other pollinators would take their position easily.

You may be on to something there. Why not genetically engineer mosquitoes to actually be beneficial to the host?

Mosquitoes that deliver medication? Don't give them any ideas. The US already fluoridates 2/3 of the population (Link).

I for one will never let them do that.

Although I wouldn't mind if they could cure everyone in the States. More for me, y'know.
