Reminds me of something that happened to my grandfather when he was in his late 70s.. Big family reunion at a park near Lake Michigan. The park was a couple hundred feet above the lake with pretty steep embankments going down to the lake, all forested.

Anyway, grandpa disappears for a while and comes back covered in mud reading his newspaper like nothing happened. He'd decided to go for a walk for a bit of quiet, got too close to the edge and took a mudslide about 20 feet down. He managed to pull himself up and wander back. He didn't even mention anything until someone saw he was covered in mud. "Ah yeah, I decided to go check out the trees for a bit and figured sliding down was the fastest way."

Like a boss.

I will now call all people who swallow 80 year old men 'Sinkholes'.

Your grandad visits 'sinkholes' and gets swallowed. And he likes it.

The last place I lived my back yard developed a sink hole in the early spring maybe 2-foot wide and 2-foot deep.

I started excavating and found

1) an enormous bullfrog from my nearby pond that was overwintering and maybe stuck.

2) A 3 foot circular structure made of bricks that kept going down. It seemed to be filled with trash and rubble. I found an old glass medicine bottle and some gold (gold plated handle presumably from a ladies hand bag).

I could never decide what it was - well, cistern to hold water, or well constructed outhouse pit.

Couldn't have been a well?

If I was the old man, I'd be praying it was a well, and completely omitting any choice of cesspool from my mind.

An old well or septic system isn't really a sinkhole.

Wow, another hipster who hates newspapers. You're so cool, subby.
